Luke reveals that after pondering the Good News of Jesus Christ, he too has decided to join the eyewitnesses and ministers and hand on the story of the Lord in his own way, by compiling a narrative of the events in an orderly sequence and sharing them with his friend Theophilus. Theophilus, whose name means “God’s beloved,” is also a term that describes each of us. Luke’s narrative is thus intended for a much wider audience than this one person. It shares the Good News of Jesus Christ with us, but it also inspires each of us to follow Luke’s example in sharing the story of Jesus Christ in unique and personal ways. We may not write another Gospel, but we can share the Good News with those around us through our service, our relationships, our choices and convictions.

FIRST READING: Today’s reading is set in the historical context of the return to Jerusalem after the Babylonian Exile. Ezra the priest presides at a solemn assembly of all the people, including the children old enough to understand, and proclaims the Book of the Law of the Lord to them. (Note how the ritual described in today’s text parallels ourown celebrations of the Liturgy of the word.) Were the people crying tears of joy because the realized they were God’s people and that God had made a covenant with them? Or were these tears of sadness because of their failures?

RESPONSORIAL PSALM: The antiphon is adapted from Jesus’ words in John 6:63c. Psalm 19 acclaims the Law of the Lord as priceless treasure and as that which gives light to our eyes. We pray that our thoughts and words may be formed by the Word of God and be pleasing to God.

SECOND READING: Just as the human body is one body with many different parts (members), each with unique and necessary functions, so too, the Church of God has many members, roles, and gifts, each with its own function necessary for the working of the One Body.

GOSPEL: The first part of today’s Gospel is the beginning of the Gospel according to Luke. We hear his purpose in writing the Gospel and its dedication to his Theophilus. Today we see him attending a synagogue service in Nazareth where he does the reading. The text he reads is programmatic of his whole mission. Indeed, Isaiah’s prophecy is fulfilled in Jesus.

The main source of operating funds for St. Thomas the Apostle Parish is our weekly offertory collection. To assist us in being good stewards of God’s gift of treasure, our collection from last weekend is compared below to the collection the same weekend a year ago. You will notice that the amount is considerably less and has been for quite some time. Although we have been cutting costs for the last several years, our income has also been less which means the expenses for the year may not be met. Please help your Parish to make up the difference by being as generous as your means allow. The information below will be updated weekly.

children at all times. Questions? Please call 973-338-8505.

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION: IT TAKES A LIFETIME Generations of faith-filled Catholic people have passed on to us the most precious gift that we possess—the gift of faith. As this generation’s “good stewards,” we are obligated to pass on the gift of faith to our children.

Children primarily learn through the examples of their parents. Today, many parents are volunteering their time and talents to their churches and community groups and bringing their children along with them. More and more churches are encouraging children to return a portion of their “treasure”—their allowance or other earnings—with special children’s offering envelopes. As we know from our own experience, it takes a lifetime to develop the habits of good stewardship.

God has blessed us in so many marvelous ways. Stewardship is a way of life built around gratitude to God, lived out by returning a portion of the time, talent, and treasure allotted to us. There is no more precious inheritance we can pass on to our children than this lifestyle of gratitude.

“If you will give these instructions . . ., you will be a good minister of Christ Jesus, nourished on the words of the faith and of the sound teaching you have followed.” (1 Timothy 4:6)

STEWARDSHIP APPEAL UPDATE Our Stewardship Appeal is being very well received by the people of Saint Thomas the Apostle. To date, 350 households have increased their weekly contribution in response to our stewardship of treasure program, representing a combined weekly increase of $ 2552.

Please use the special Stewardship envelope to indi-cate your new level of giving, and then return to your regular envelope packet for succeeding weeks. If you are interested in receiving information on our Electro-nic Giving Program, please contact the parish office.

“Catholicism”

The "Year of Faith" declared by Pope Benedict XVI began on October 11, 2012 and will conclude on November 24, 2013. During this Year of Faith, Catholics are asked to study and reflect on the teachings of our faith. In response to this call, the St. Thomas Adult Education ministry will be presenting the new series entitled Catholicism, produced by Word on Fire. Fr. Robert Barron created this film series as a presentation of what Catholics believe and why, so all Catholics will come to a deeper understanding of the Catholic faith. This engaging program uses beautiful photography, art, architecture, literature, music, and all the treasures of Catholic tradition to illuminate the timeless teachings of the Church.

Beginning Thursday January 24, 2013, the series will be presented on nine consecutive Thursday evenings from 7:30PM - 9:30PM in the St. Thomas Parish center, in the St. Peter’s room. The evening will include questions and points of discussion. For more information, call Deacon Brian at 973-454-7289.

Make a Gift through an IRA Charitable Rollover

The IRA Charitable Rollover has been extended through 2013. This extension allows individuals 702 or older to move up to $100,000 from their IRAs directly to qualified charities such as your parish, Archbishop’s Annual Appeal, the Archdiocese of Newark, or another archdiocesan institution without having to pay income taxes on the donated money.

You need to act fast! Qualified distributions made by Feb. 1, 2013 may be counted retroactively for the 2012 tax year. Also, if you took a distribution from an IRA in December 2012, you may make a contribution to a qualified charity before Feb. 1, 2013 and treat this as a direct transfer.

For more information about how you and the Church can benefit from an IRA charitable rollover, please contact your parish office or the Planned Giving Office at the Archdiocese of Newark. You can reach Theresa Lynch at (973) 497-4042 or by e-mail at [email protected].

Archbishop’s Annual Appeal - Making a Difference

Individuals and families living with disabilities, particularly developmental disabilities, often feel at the margins o parish life. They also typically have additional struggles concerning their relationship with God, world, church, and school systems. The Archdiocesan Department of Pastoral Ministry with Persons with Disabilities works to build structures of support at the parish level to address this special group. The department seeks to affirm the Baptism of people with disabilities, acknowledging their call to participate in the life and mission of the Church, to the extent that each person desires and is able. This includes catechists and faith format, the sacramental life of the Church, evangelization, outreach and pastoral ministry.

Last year, with the help of this department, 112 parishes in the Archdiocese offered catechists for individuals with disabilities. It also promotes faith-based support for mothers and fathers, Inclusive Family Masses and has worked directly and indirectly with more than 500 families over the past few years.

Thank you for your support of the Archbishop’s Annual Appeal, which helps bring to reality the experience of welcome and affirmation for individuals and families living with disabilities in the Archdiocese f Newark.
