May we always keep in mind that this parish exists to give glory to God in all we do

and for each one of us to be sanctified in our lives. St. Francis of Assisi, pray for us.

A THANKSGIVING PRAYER

God of all blessings, source of all life, giver of all grace:

We thank you for the gift of life: for the breath that sustains life,

for the food of this earth that nurtures life,

for the life-giving love of family and friends.

We thank you for the mystery of creation:

for the beauty of the Earth that the eye can see,

for the unfolding universe that draws us beyond our imaginings.

We thank you for the communities to which we belong:

for families, for friends, for neighbors and for companions at work.

We thank you for the strangers who welcome us into their lives and

whom we invite to be part of ours.

We thank you for our brothers and sisters of all ages, all races, all

nations and all faiths.

We thank you for the multitude of ways that you call us to steward the

gifts of creation and to serve others in your name.

We thank you for this day, for the companionship we share and the

bountiful goodness of the bread we break together.

God of all goodness, we pray in thanks for your presence among us as

we gather together, and your promise to be with us now and always.

AMEN.

Thanksgiving with Saints Philemon and Apphia - Theresa Doyle-Nelson

Thanksgiving, always a joyful but demanding week, is the perfect time

to invite into your lives two November saints: Philemon (fuh-LEE-mun)

and Apphia (AF-ee-uh). November 22 is the feast day of this New

Testament husband and wife, and it happens to also be the earliest

possible date for Thanksgiving; however, November 22 more frequently

lands on a Thanksgiving preparation day.

Saints Philemon and Apphia, a couple from Colossae (an unexcavated

city in present-day Turkey), are the recipients (along with their probable

son, Archippus) of a letter from Paul, which has been named the Letter

to Philemon, but is usually referred to as simply “Philemon.” The

biblical book of Philemon is so short that it doesn’t have any chapters—

only verses, 25 in all. Despite being such a short book in the Bible, some

very handy insights can be gleaned from Philemon and Apphia within

the letter and, with some effort, can be applied to Thanksgiving

get-togethers.

Lesson 1: Keep Your Home God-Centered

To Philemon, our co-worker, . . . to Apphia our sister, . . . and to the

church at your house (Phlm 1-2).

We learn very early on in this letter (verses 1-2) that Philemon and

Apphia had a house church at their home. Because there were no official

church structures yet during this first century of Christianity, people’s

homes were frequently used. Apparently, God was so important to this

couple that they warmly welcomed the Christians of Colossae into their

home so they could pray and worship as community. If you will be

hosting Thanksgiving this year, try to remember Philemon and Apphia’s

house church and see if you can work God into the picture. If you will be

visiting someone else’s house, consider bringing a God-honoring gift

connected to thankfulness or a religious family game to play after dinner

(just one example would be the Bible edition of Scattergories). See if

you can somehow quietly, gently create some space for God within the

day wherever you go!

Lesson 2: Pay Attention to Elderly Wisdom

I rather urge you out of love, being as I am, Paul, an old man (Phlm 9a).

Stop and be mindful of any elderly people at the Thanksgiving table.

Perhaps they are not up-to-date with technology, clothing, or other

current trends; however, they are living history and often full of classic

wisdom. Rather than turning your head and rolling your eyes when they

speak, maybe you should give them a listen for a moment or two. When

Paul wrote his letter to Philemon and Apphia, he referred to himself as

“an old man.” If you tend to automatically disregard Grandma’s counsel

or discreetly chuckle at Uncle Frank’s long-ago stories, try to make

yourself pause and wait a bit, pray a bit. There just might be some

surprising wisdom in their words which might, in turn, offer a healthy

opportunity for true growth.

Lesson 3: Look at Others with New Eyes

Welcome him [Onesimus] as you would me (Phlm 17b).

Because Onesimus was a slave, he probably experienced a fair amount

of snubbing and rejection. Paul’s encouragement to Philemon and

Apphia to forgive and accept this person with such a lowly status may

have been unthinkable to many in ancient Colossae. However, Paul’s

urging to change their attitudes toward their slave could prompt us now

to glance around the Thanksgiving table. Is there someone who tends to

be disregarded, scorned, or discreetly (or obviously) ridiculed? Is there

someone at the table whom you struggle to like or accept? If there is

someone you have been impolite to, say a quick prayer, then try to look

at him or her with fresh eyes, try to see Christ in that person, try to give

that person a new chance in your heart.

Lesson 4: Offer a Warm Welcome in Your Home

Prepare a guest room for me, for I hope to be granted to you through

your prayers (Phlm 22).

In one of the last verses in this letter, Paul expressed hope to visit

Philemon and Apphia and requested a room to be readied for him. If you

will be hosting Thanksgiving at your house, imagine expecting a guest

like Paul and prepare your home accordingly. Welcome your guests

warmly; think of Christ’s command to love one another and serve with

grace. Ponder what matters the most. Avoid prioritizing food or

elaborate table settings and focus on people first.

If you will be going to someone else’s house, be a Christ-like guest. Be

appreciative and helpful in any way you can. Treat your hosts with

consideration and strive to help them enjoy the day, as well.

Thanksgiving week can be a frenzied time, but try to remember that it’s

about giving thanks to God. So let God guide your week and day, and on

November 22, try to set aside a little bit of time to read the 25 verses that

Paul wrote to Saints Philemon and Apphia. See if this holy married

couple might prompt a tweak here or there for your Thanksgiving. Ask

these generous and open-minded first-century saints to pray for your

Thanksgiving; that it may be filled with genuine gratitude to the Lord,

and that kindness and acceptance may be more plentiful than food.

Being Generous with Treasure.

Recap for week of 11/05/17

“Well done, my good and faithful servant. Since you have been

faithful in small matters, I will give you great responsibilities.”

- MATTHEW 25:21

God expects us to nurture and develop the gifts He has given us

and then generously return a portion with increase. He doesn’t

want us to waste or hoard the gifts He has given us; He expects

us to grow our gifts, use them wisely and be generous with

them. Unfortunately, many of us are not generous in proportion

to all that God has given us.

God generously bestows gifts upon us, spiritual gifts as well as

physical gifts. He asks us to use those gifts for the purpose of

building up the Kingdom of God and leading others to Jesus

Christ. Because we are called to be good and faithful stewards,

it is important for us to spend time in prayer with Jesus so that

He can instruct us how to best utilize the gifts He has given to

us. Do we invest our talents and share them with others? Do we

go out and bury them, refusing to share them in service to the

world? God, who is infinitely generous, rewards us for

manifesting His power by means of the gifts He has given to us.

Basketball season is right around the corner and we are looking

for referees and score/time keepers. Referees must be 13

by January 1, 2018 and score/time keepers must be 12

by January 1, 2018. Anyone interested please contact Tim

Abernathy 314-368-2047 or at [email protected] for more

information.

Thank you to those who attended the Parent Information Night

last week. If you know of a family that might be interested in

an amazing educational and faith-filled experience, please

suggest that they visit St. Francis of Assisi School for a tour.

We will also have our annual Catholic Schools Week Open

House after all Masses on the last Sunday in January. That is

the official opening of our registration period for next school

year. Now that we only have one class per grade, it will be

important to register early.

This weekend 44 second

graders from the full time

school and the PSR will

receive the Sacrament of

Reconciliation. Father came

into their classroom last

week to practice with them,

as shown in this picture.

Please pray for these

children and their families.

St. Francis of Assisi was well represented at this year’s

Archdiocesan Edcamp. This professional development format

is an “unconference”, that is a free (sponsored) event where

participants dictate the topics, professionals share based on

experience rather than expertise, and the needs of the

participants drive the learning. Participants network with one

other that day and then continue their learning and sharing

through social media platforms like Twitter and Facebook.

One of the leaders of Edcamp ArchSTL was St. Francis’s own

Mike Herries. Thank you, Mike for your leadership and your

contagious love of learning.

This week we welcome Mrs. Rebecca Nestor to our staff. Mrs.

Nestor is a certified teacher and will be the instructional aide

for first grade for the remainder of the year. She is pictured

with the other St. Francis teachers above at Edcamp ArchSTL.

Mrs. Singer, our former first grade aide, moved on to other

opportunities earlier this month. We wish her all the best and

thank her for her service.

Today, Sunday November 19th, the St. Vincent de Paul Society

delivered to 40 families in our area boxes of food, food cards,

and a turkey or turkey dinner to each house. Because of this our

food pantry is bare and needs replenishing.

On Thanksgiving day we are asking that you bring cans of food

and or a monetary donation to Mass. This will give us a chance

to replenish our pantry for the Christmas season in which we

will do the same for these families at that time. Thank you for

your continuous help.

The reason I wanted to become Catholic

is I wanted to re-establish a relationship

with God because I had fallen away

from Him. My wife opened my eyes to

what I was missing out on because God

and the Catholic faith are such a big part

of her life. It made me interested in

Catholicism. What I have gained from

the RCIA class is knowledge, a better

understanding of the Catholic religion. I

went to Mass with my wife before and

felt really lost because I didn’t

understand why we do all the things we

do, so it made me uncomfortable. Now

having learned what I have so far in

class I don’t feel lost anymore and I

enjoy Mass and feel more involved.

I felt by being my husband’s sponsor,

we have been joining ourselves more

closely to Christ and His church after

going through my own RCIA

experience I knew he would need

someone close to his side. I felt no

one could be better than Christ and

myself. What I’ve gained from this

experience is a ton of knowledge. I

feel as if my RCIA experience seven

years ago wasn’t the best but I had

been studying Catholicism four years

prior so that gave me a lot of help but

just by going with my husband it has

been so beneficial to me and him. I

actually look forward to class every

Sunday. I know I am going to be

learning something new and the great

conversations and fellowship with the

other people are so wonderful.

We are looking for a team of people who would be willing to

help in planning a visit by bringing our Honduran brothers and

sisters to St. Francis in Oakville for a visit next year. This

would be a short-term commitment beginning this winter and

ending after their departure. If you would be interested in being

on this task force or you have questions, please contact

Tammy Chumley at 487-5736 x104 or [email protected].

Thank you St. Francis of Assisi for all your support of our bike

drive this past Saturday. Thank you so much for letting us use

your parking lot & working the logistics. I have to say the bike

drive was a huge success. We had a big turn out and collected

177 bikes. These bikes will keep our volunteers busy through

the winter. We truly appreciate your support. God Bless.
