CANDLE INTENTIONS

Church: Joseph Russomanno Convent: Nora Lauer

The readings today are all about God’s law - and our choices. ■ First Reading: Sirach is one of the wisdom books of the Old Testament. It is really a collection of maxims – memorable nuggets of wisdom addressed by a wise man to his son, a teacher to his disciple. Today’s readings emphasizes free will. No one can say that they have no choice, that the commandments are impossible to keep. “If you choose,” says the teacher, “you can keep the commandments” (Sirach 15:15). And the choice is clear cut – it is the water, life and death, good and evil. ■ Responsorial Psalm 119 is the longest of all the psalms, with 22 distinct sections, one for each letter of the Hebrew alphabet. The psalm praises the law of God. For the faithful person, the law is full of “wonders” (Psalm 119:18), a source of joy and blessing. Notice how many different words are used to describe the law in the short verses we hear today – the law is many-faceted, demanding a response that involves the whole person – mind, heart, and body. ■ Second Reading: Last Sunday, Saint Paul reminded the Corinthians that he preached to them not with his own words and wisdom, but God’s. And today he expresses what that wisdom is like – “mysterious, hidden,” unknown to the “rulers of this age,” and essentially unknowable – unless the Holy Spirit reveals it to us (1 Corinthians 2:7,8). ■ The Gospel: We hear a lengthy passage from the Sermon on the Mount, as Jesus gives to his disciples a new vision of the law. “ I have come not to abolish but to fulfill,” Jesus tells them (Matthew 5:17). Jesus then proceeds to take several commandments, one after the other, and interpret them in a whole new light. For Matthew, Jesus is the new Moses, and here is the lawgiver, handing down a new series of commandments far more challenging than the first. Moses said not to kill; Jesus tells his disciples not even to be angry with another person. Even to be in conflict or litigation, he says, separates us from right relationship with God. Moses said not to commit adultery; Jesus calls us to a much higher standard of morality, a righteousness that comes from an inner purity.

HOLY NAME SOCIETY MEETING

Wednesday, February 19th at 7:30 pm in St. Peter's Room

St. Thomas the Apostle Prayer Shawl Ministry

Our next meeting will be held on Sunday, March 16 at 11:30 am in the Parish Center's St. Peter's Room. These meetings give our members a chance to pray and work together— to exchange patterns and ideas. You do not need to attend these meetings to be an active member.

During these cold winter months a prayer shawl or lap robe, which can be had for the asking, may well be comforting to someone limited in activity or going through a difficult time.

We need to increase our supply of baby blankets. Please consider making a blanket. We continue to give a blanket to each baby baptized in our parish and have extended this outreach to include babies in special need of prayers.

For further information about our Ministry or to check if a meeting is canceled please call the parish center or Alicia @ 973-473-6633 or Bernadette @973-893-0114. Drop by our meeting to speak to a member All members are encouraged to stop by, perhaps pick up yam and say a prayer with us.

Let us continue to pray for those making shawls and those who receive them.

All are Invited to Pray the Rosary

The Rosary Society will meet at the church to pray the Rosary at 7 pm on the following days:

March 3* & March 31, May 5, June 2

(*Recitation of Rosary held in St. Peter’s Room) Meetings follow in the Parish Center

Here is another excerpt from REDISCOVER CATHOLICISM wherein the author,

Mathew Kelly, states:

"In my own personal journey, Confession has played a very powerful role, helping me to strive to become the-best-version-of-myself. I find Confession to be a humbling experience, but not a humiliating one. Above all, I find that it is an experience of liberation that enables me to reassess where I am in the journey, helps me identify what is holding me back and encourages me to continue along the way. --- Confession is the perfect spiritual practice to rekindle our passion for excellence in the spiritual life".

You can pick up a free copy of the book REDISCOVER CATHOLICISM
