    We Should Be Singing

I am often asked “When should the congregation be singing?” and the short answer is: just about the whole

time. For more details, keep reading.

Of course, there are exceptions. We listen to priests and then respond accordingly. There’s the responsorial

(normally a Psalm), where the psalmist proclaims scripture (preferably from the ambo, we are instructed) and

we join in on the responsorial phrase in between the verses. There are those few times a year when we hear a

soloist, normally during the meditation song after communion, wherein people are asked to prayerfully

experience the text being presented. But other than those times, we need to be singing.

From the General Instructions of the Roman Missal (GIRM) paragraph 39.: The Christian faithful who come

together as one in expectation of the Lord’s coming are instructed by the Apostle Paul to sing together

Psalms, hymns, and spiritual canticles (cf. Col 3:16). Singing is the sign of the heart’s joy (cf. Acts 2:46).

Thus St. Augustine says rightly, “Singing is for one who loves,” and there is also an ancient proverb:

“Whoever sings well prays twice over.”

Let’s look at some of the specific instructions from the GIRM.

Entrance – paragraphs 47 and 48 state that the entrance music should “foster the unity of those who have

been gathered” and that the first option is for it to be sung by the choir and the people.

Responsorial Psalm – paragraph 61 calls for the people’s response to be sung.

Offertory – This is actually the one place that the congregation doesn’t have to sing; but in the spirit of

unity, we include everyone. This is a good place to introduce new music.

Communion Song – (Paragraph 86) Communion music begins while the Priest is receiving the Sacrament,

“ . . . its purpose being to express the spiritual union of the communicants by means of the unity of their

voices, to show gladness of heart, and to bring out more clearly the ‘communitarian’ character of the

procession to receive the Eucharist. The singing is prolonged for as long as the Sacrament is being

    administered to the faithful.”

Meditation Song – (Paragraph 88) This is something that can be sung by the whole congregation, after

which the priest and the faithful pray quietly for some time.

Recessional – Technically outside of the liturgy (“The Mass has ended”) but in the spirit of unity, we

invite all to participate in the music, ending the mass just as it was begun.

The GIRM references another church document, Sacrosanctum Concilium (1963) calling for music leaders to

choose music that “corresponds to the spirit of the liturgical action and that they foster the participation of all

the faithful.” How do we do that? Lyrics are provided in worship aids and on projected slides, and the music

is arranged in vocal ranges that are more suitable for congregational singing. We can choose songs that many

people know so well from an amazing musical legacy here at Christ the King, and we carefully introduce

music that may be new. And we are grateful to have devoted members who serve in the Audio Visual and

Music Ministries to lead our community in the congregational singing in the Mass.

So, sing out! As always, please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or suggestions.

    Ofertorio – Éste, de hecho, es el único momento durante el cual la congregación no tiene que cantar;

    A Prayer for Generosity

Dear Lord, teach me to be generous,

teach me to serve you as you deserve,

to give and not to count the cost,

to fight and not to heed the wound,

to toil and not to seek for rest,

to labor and not to ask for a reward,

save that of knowing that I do Your will.

    ~ St. Ignatius of Loyola

    Oración para la generosidad

    Señor Jesús,

    enséñanos a ser generosos,

    a servirte como Tú mereces,

    a dar sin medida,

a combatir sin temor a las heridas,

    a trabajar sin descanso,

    sin esperar otra recompensa

    que saber que hemos cumplido

    Tu santa voluntad.

    ~ San Ignacio de Loyola

All creatures of our God and King, Lift up your voice and with us sing. O, praise Him! Alleluia! Thou burning sun with golden beam, Thou silver moon with softer gleam,

O, praise Him, O praise Him. Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia.

Thou rushing wind that art so strong, Ye clouds that sail in heaven along. O, praise Him! Alleluia! Thou rising moon, in praise rejoice, Ye lights of evening, find a voice!

Let all things their Creator bless, And worship Him in humbleness. O, praise Him! Alleluia! Praise, praise the Father, praise the Son And praise the Spirit, Three in one!

CAN WE LOVE? Tom Booth Copyright © 2007, 2008. Published by spiritandsong.com

Can we love? Can we lay down our lives?

Can we wear his crown of thorns? Can we drink the cup that he drinks?

We must lay down our lives!

It's more than raising our hands, it's more than singing this song. It's saying "yes" to the Giver of life, it's righting the ways that are wrong!

It's more than shouting God's name, it's more than singing his praise.

It's bringing forgiveness to injury's wound, and hope to those imprisoned by shame.

Loving the Lord our God with all our heart, mind and soul, Loving our neighbor as ourselves, the kingdom of love we will know!

With feet secure on the ground and hearts humbled by love We stand before God's anointed one and ask the question, and ask the question:

  • ACT OF FAITH DURING COMMUNION Lord Jesus Christ, I firmly believe that you are present in this Blessed Sacrament as true God and true Man, with your Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity. My Redeemer and my Judge,

I adore your Divine Majesty together with the angels and saints. I believe, O Lord; increase my faith.

COMMUNION ANTIPHON Jn 14: 15-16 If you love me, keep my commandments, says the Lord, and I will ask the Father

and he will send you another Paraclete, to abide with you for ever, alleluia.

WHEN THE POOR ONES TUNE: El Camino by Miguel Manzano, Lyrics: José Antonia Olivar TR.

Martin A Seltz. © 1971 Jose Antonio Olivar and Miguel Manzano. Publ .OCP

    When the poor ones, who have nothing, still are giving; when the thirsty pass the cup, water to share;

when the wounded offer others strength and healing:

We see God, here by our side, walking our way; we see God, here, by our side, walking our way.

When compassion gives the suff'ring consolation; when expecting brings to birth hope that was lost; when we choose love, not the hatred all around us:

    When our spirits like a chalice, brim with gladness; when our voices, full and clear, sing out the truth;

when our longings, free from envy, seek the humble:

    When the goodness poured from heaven fills our dwellings; when the nations, work to change war into peace; when the stranger is accepted as our neighbor;

HOLY SPIRIT Bryan Torwalt, Katie Torwalt © 2011 Capitol CMG Genesis, Jesus Culture

There's nothing worth more that will ever come close. No thing can compare; You're our living hope.

    Your Presence, Lord.

I've tasted and seen of the sweetest of loves, where my heart becomes free and my shame is un-

    done, in Your Presence, Lord.

Holy Spirit, You are welcome here; Come flood this place and fill the atmosphere; Your glory, God, is what our hearts long for,

To be overcome by your Presence, Lord. Your Presence, Lord.

Let us become more aware of Your Presence; Let us experience the glory of Your goodness. Lord.

    CHRISTIANS, LET US LOVE ONE

ANOTHER PICARDY, Sr. Cladia Foltz, SNJM and Armand Nigro, SJ © 1973 OCP

    Christians let us love one another as we share the true living bread Jesus is our God and our brother;

with his flesh and blood we are fed.

Everyone who loves is born of God Jesus is our life, God is love.

We who break this bread are one body, we who share this cup are all one Children of our Father in heaven, we are heirs of God’s only Son.

We who eat and drink at this table die and rise again with our Lord.

Drawing from our rock living water giv’n to all who thirst for accord.

On the path of life we may falter earthly food alone leaves us weak. Always you invite from the altar,

“Hungry souls their food here must seek.”

Wheat and grape incarnate a mystery; Jesus is the true living bread

Let us eat with joy and thanksgiving, trusting in the word he has said.

TESTIFY TO LOVE Field, Pool, Van Manen, Riekerk © 1996 Windswept Music

All the colors of the rainbow, all the voices of the wind. Ev’ry dream that reaches out, reaches out to find where love begins.

Ev’ry word of ev’ry story, ev’ry star in ev’ry sky. Ev’ry corner of creation lives to testify.

For as long as I shall live I will testify to love. I’ll be a witness in the silences when words are not enough. With every breath I take, I will give thanks to God above, For as long as I shall live, I will testify to love.

From the mountains to the valleys, from the rivers to the sea. Ev’ry hand that reaches out, ev’ry hand that reaches out to offer peace.

Ev’ry single act of mercy, ev’ry step to Kingdom come. All the hope in ev’ry heart speaks what love has done.
