“Elijah prayed for death, saying: This is enough, O Lord. Take my life, for I am no better than my fathers. He lay down and fell asleep under the broom tree, but then an angel touched him and ordered him to get up and eat…for the angel of the Lord came back a second time, touched him and ordered ‘Get up
and eat, else the journey will be too long for you.’ He got up, ate and drank…he walked forty days and nights to the mountain of God, Horeb.” We return to Capernaum and find Jesus telling us ‘I AM the bread of life.’ It is in the Eucharist we find Jesus present to accompany us on our journey. Elijah was awakened twice and was ordered to brace himself for the journey. Jesus is the bread of life for us. We often overlook how great, how important, how necessary is this gift for our spiritual survival. How many people in the world die each day of starvation? Too many, and we are called to assist them. How many people in the church take the gift of the Eucharist for granted? We speak of a priest shortage, while we should focus on the lack of appreciation for the gift of the Eucharist. Where in our world are people deprived of what is so essential, yet we sometimes take the priesthood, the mass and Eucharist for granted. If Jesus is the bread of life, I need to go to Him with renewed fervor and gratitude. ‘Get up and eat, else the journey will be too long for you.’

Volvió por segunda vez el ángel del Señor, le tocó y le dijo: ‘Levántate y come, porque el camino es demasiado largo para ti.’ Se levantó, comió y bebió, y con la fuerza de aquella comida caminó cuarenta días y cuarenta noches hasta el monte de Dios, el Horeb.” Retornamos a Capernaúm y encontramos a Jesús diciéndonos ‘Yo soy el pan de vida’. Es en la Eucaristía que encontramos a Jesús presente para acompañarnos en nuestra jornada. Jesús es el pan de vida para nosotros. A menudo no ponemos atención a lo grandioso, importante y necesario que este don es para nuestra sobrevivencia espiritual. Hay tantas personas en el mundo que se mueren de hambre. Estamos llamados a ayudarles. Hay tantas personas en la iglesia que toman el don de la Eucaristía por dado. Hablamos de una escasez de sacerdotes, cuando deberíamos de enfocarnos en la falta de aprecio por el don de la Eucaristía. En un mundo en donde la gente carece de lo esencial, nosotros no valoramos el sacerdocio, la misa y la Eucaristía como deberíamos. Si Jesús es el pan de vida, necesito acercarme a El con renovado fervor y gratitud. ‘Levántate y come, porque el camino es demasiado largo para ti.’
Siamo noi a cercare Dio o e lui a cercare noi? Ancora prima che noi cominciamo a cercarlo consapevolmente, egli ci attira a sé, come un innamorato, tramite Cristo. La reazione giusta da parte nostra è di essere pienamente disposti ad ascoltare e ad imparare: “Chiunque ha udito il Padre e
ha imparato da lui, viene a me”. Ciò significa seguire Cristo, poiché “solo colui che viene da Dio ha visto il Padre” e quindi solo lui può conoscere perfettamente la volontà del Padre e rivelarla. La vita eterna che noi tutti desideriamo dipende dalla fede in Cristo, da una fiducia e da un impegno costanti, che faranno cominciare la vita-risurrezione qui ed ora, garantendo la risurrezione dei corpi alla vita immortale. In attesa, i fedeli si nutrono del suo Corpo e del suo Sangue nella santa Eucaristia, costituendo a poco a poco in loro stessi una “riserva” di vita immortale. Se Elia o gli Ebrei dell’Esodo mangiarono del pane prezioso, noi mangiamo qualcosa di molto più prezioso: “Il pane che io darò è la mia carne”.
