Last week’s homily continued

...article continued from last week

But still, people want and really need to say something and saying something negative is always easier.

It does not stop there; I saw it when I decided to have our stained glass windows repaired, and when they were out for repair (for the first time in 81 years) people were asking why I was selling the windows under their feet!

Most recently, I cannot tell you how many people have asked me if I am thinking about the safety of our church and the parishioners. As if I get up in the morning and willy-nilly just come over to celebrate Mass and hope things fall into place??

I have been a priest for twenty-give years, I have been involved in upkeep and maintenance of property, not only as a priest but as a deacon, a seminarian and even as a layperson in the business world. I actually have a vision! And still, there are people who never trust, never believe, never have enough faith in the possibility, in the reality that I actually have a plan and a mission for our parish, its parishioners and its property

So, yes, we will be renting the school beginning this September 1st. The former Lakeland-Andover School for special needs of young children will be renting our school. And no, Faith Formation will not be canceled or thrown out. Part and parcel of our negotiating a lease for the school was that Faith Formation would always come first. Imagine, I actually had a plan! So, we have put together a plan where our Faith Formation classes will be able to continue without exception or inconvenience. No, “Coffee And” has not been canceled. No, the parish is not losing or selling the property. And no, I am not out of my mind.

Our parish has seven (7) pieces of property, all in need much maintenance and there are 9,000 reasons why I rented the school (and each othem have George Washington’s face on them); to help maintain our property and not put the burden on you the parishioners at just two.

So, I feel I am in good company with the Lord, who has always been second-guessed, always been mistaken and misunderstood. But that does not give us a license to do or say anything that we want. We are called to be better, to be more believing, more trusting, more forgiving,

not only with the Lord but with me, as your pastor, with your family and friends and most especially, with yourselves.

At the end of the trial of Saint Peter and the Disciples, after the raging waters of the sea that petrified them, they were able to call out: “Truly, you are the Son of God.” Maybe it takes a little turmoil in our lives to realize the gifts which God shares with us. Maybe it takes a little kick in the pants to realize that He actually has a mission, and we owe it to Him to believe and trust in that mission. Maybe it takes a little whisper to capture our attention and realize it is not we who keep the faith, but it is the faith which keeps us.

As we prayed in the Psalm this week: “Lord, please let us see Your kindness and grant us Your salvation.” Now let us be quiet for a while and listen to the whispers of His voice.

The following is my homily from last week:

“Observe what is right and do what is just.” Seems pretty easy no? The Prophet Isaiah calls us to live justly, love inclusively and persevere faithfully. Noble goals and ways of life that sound easy on the ear, but difficult in the heart and in the mind. It is not always easy to live justly and to accept everyone as they are.

You have heard and seen many times in our church, the motto “All Our Welcome.” It is on the banners in our sanctuary, it is on the front of our bulletin and foremost on our website. Our Opening Hymn was these same exact words and yet some of us still find it hard to share a pew with a crying child, an elderly woman without a mask, a person of a different color and worse, imagine sitting next to a sinner??

Isaiah continued that God says His house will be called “A house of prayer for all peoples.” Not just the chosen few, not just the Jews, but for the Gentiles, the Canaanites and even you and me.

God’s house is open to all those who worship Him with sincerity of heart. Not on the beach, not before a beautiful sunset or in a calm park, but in His house, in His Church!

Saint Paul, in writing to the early Church living in Rome, reminds them that God is not an “Indian Giver” (I am not sure that is politically correct to say that anymore). But the point is, that God’s mercy is for all people: “For God delivered all to disobedience, that He might have mercy upon all.”

And yet we still want to make His embrace narrow, His reach shortened and His love conditional. Why? Because that is the way we love!

...to be continued

HYMNS FOR HOLY MASS this week

PROCESSIONAL:

“Holy, Holy, Holy! Lord God Almighty!”

Holy, Holy, Holy! Lord God Almighty! Early in the morning our song shall rise to Thee. Holy, Holy, Holy, merciful and mighty! God in three Persons, blessed Trinity. Holy, Holy, Holy! All the Saints adore Thee, Casting down their golden crowns around the glassy sea; Cherubim and seraphim falling down before Thee, God everlasting through eternity. Holy, Holy, Holy! Though the darkness hide Thee, Though the eye made blind by sin Thy glory may not see, Only Thou art holy; there is none beside Thee, Perfect in power, in love, and purity. PSALM RESPONSE: “ Lord, Your love is eternal; do not forsake the work of Your hands.” OFFERTORY: “Lord of All Hopefulness” Lord of all hopefulness, Lord of all joy, Whose trust, ever child-like, no cares could destroy, Be there at our waking, and give us, we pray, Your bliss in our hearts, Lord, at the break of the day. Lord of all eagerness, Lord of all faith, Whose strong hands were skilled at the plane and the lathe, Be there at our labors, and give us, we pray, Your strength in our hearts, Lord, at the noon of the day. Lord of all kindliness, Lord of all grace, Your hands swift to welcome, Your arms to embrace, Be there at our homing, and give us, we pray, Your love in our hearts, Lord, at the eve of the day. Lord of all gentleness, Lord of all calm, Whose voice is contentment, whose presence is balm, Be there at our sleeping, and give us, we pray, Your peace in our hearts, Lord, at the end of the day.

COMMUNION: “I Am the Bread of Life”

I am the Bread of life. You who come to me shall not hunger; and who believe in me shall not thirst. No one can come to me unless the Father beckons.

R. And I will raise you up, and I will raise you up, and I will raise you up on the last day.

The bread that I will give Is my flesh for the life of the world, and if you eat of this bread, you shall live forever, you shall live forever. R. Unless you eat of the flesh of the Son of Man and drink of His blood, and drink of His blood, you shall not have life within you. R. I am the Resurrection, I am the life, If you believe in me, even though you die, you shall live forever. R.

Yes, Lord, we believe that You are the Christ, the Son of God, Who has come into the world. R.

RECESSIONAL: “All Creatures of Our God and King” All creatures of our God and King, Life up your voice and with us sing; Alleluia! Alleluia! O burning sun with golden beam And silver moon with softer gleam, Sing your praises! Alleluia! Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia! O rushing wind and breezes soft, O clouds that ride the winds aloft Sing your praises! Alleluia! Thou rising morn, in praise rejoice, O lights of evening, find a voice. Sing your praises! Alleluia! Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!

Pastor’s collection

This year, the Sisters from the Daughters of the Compassionate Lord Jesus were scheduled to visit our parish but cannot visit due to the Wuhan virus. The sisters work in Colombia, Nigeria

and Mozambique. They care for orphans, neglected seniors (especially those without children); street and abandoned children and for old priests and prisoners. This year, the Sisters are asking for your financial help to continue with their projects. In this country it takes about $8,000 dollars to train a Sister for one year, but in Nigeria it takes only $1,000. Nothing is too small and nothing is too large. There are 2 ways you can help their ministry: 1.) Prayerful assistance: pray for the Sisters that God will bless them with new vocations. 2.) Financial assistance: to help with their missionary projects. Compassion is calling us forward to be Good Samaritans of our time, to clean, to bind, to heal, to feed, to look after, to visit, to quench thirst and to clothe. “Be Compassionate as your heavenly Father is Compassionate.” The money received from this appeal will be used for two classrooms that will accommodate sixty (60) students. Thank you for all your help and support now and in the future. The sisters promise to remember you in their daily prayers. As we do each year, we will pray one “Our Father”, one “Hail Mary “and one “Glory Be” at the end of each Mass for the intentions of the missions. This year we will continue to pray for the needs of the Daughters of the Compassionate Lord Jesus.
