Today's Gospel reading directly follows last week's Gospel in which Jesus taught the disciples how to handle disputes and conflict within the Christian community. In today's reading Peter asks Jesus how many times one ought to extend forgiveness to another. Peter proposes a reasonable number of times, perhaps seven. Jesus replies by extending Peter's proposal by an enormous amount; not just seven times should one forgive, but 77 times. The parable of the unforgiving servant is Jesus' elaboration of his initial reply to Peter. Through the parable we come to understand the depths of God's mercy toward us and the results of our acceptance of God's forgiveness. The king in the parable decides to settle accounts with his servants. We are told that one servant in particular owes the king an enormous sum of money. Despite the promise of the servant, it is unlikely that he would ever be able to repay the debt that he owes. The king is moved by the humility of the pleading servant and mercifully forgives the debt. Rather than displaying gratitude for this forgiveness, the servant confronts a fellow servant who owes him a small debt—a pittance when compared with the amount that was owed to the king. The unmerciful servant refuses the pleas of his fellow servant and sends the servant to prison. A few other servants tell the merciful king about the actions of the unforgiving servant. The king punishes the servant because he refused to show the kind of mercy he had himself received from the king. Jesus concludes by indicating that this is how it will be with God and those who refuse to forgive one another. There is a temptation to quantify forgiveness as Peter tried to do, but Jesus' point is that forgiveness is not about quantity—the number of times we extend forgiveness to another. In the parable the king's forgiveness is like God's forgiveness, and it transforms us, helping us to be as forgiving as God. The lesson is clear: If we hoard God's mercy while showing no mercy to others, we risk forfeiting the effects of God's mercy in our lives.

Prayer Shawl Ministry

Our ministry is in need of new members who knit or crochet and would like to share their talent with our ministry. All are welcome to joins us on the 3rd Sunday of each month in the St. Peters room from 11:30 to 1:30 pm. The meeting gives our members a chance to pray and work together as a group as well as exchange patterns and new ideas to enhance our ability to comfort others in need. You do not need to attend these meetings to be an active member to share your talent with our ministry. Please come to a meeting or call Betsy @ 973 893-2441 for more information on sharing your talent with our ministry. A prayer shawl or lap robe, which can be had for the asking, may well be comforting to someone limited in activity or going through a difficult time. You may request a shawl by speaking to one of our members, dropping by our meetings or calling the parish center. Please note our meetings will resume on Sunday, September 17th . Let us continue to pray for those making shawls and those who receive them.

Men’s Scripture Reading and Reflection

ALL MEN are invited Monday September 25 at 7:30pm in the St. James Room.

Join a group of ordinary men and spend 90 minutes reflecting on the Sunday Scripture Readings for the coming week.

We'll discuss Church teaching within the readings and learn something of what was going on at that time.

Share the extraordinary Word of God and together we can learn more about our beautiful Catholic faith.

Increased Weekly Giving Program

Our Increased Giving Program is now underway. Please respond by using the

response envelope enclosed with the letter you received from Father Charles this week. The

participation of ALL parishioners is essential for the success of this effort. If you increased your

weekly offering but did not use the special envelope, please do so next weekend so we can acknowledge your response properly.

Beyond Cornerstone Service Please pray with us

You came to give first place to the last, those left behind, misunderstood and undervalued. You came to give a Lord God, You came to give honor to the least, those forgotten, overlooked and misjudged. warm welcome to the lost, those who are orphaned, abandoned and destitute.

Help us to be your ears to listen to their cries. Help us to be your voice speaking out love and acceptance. Help us to be your feet walking beside those in need. Help us to be your hands to clothe, feed and shelter them.

You came for the least, the lost and last of this world. Lord, hear our prayer. We’ve made several successful visits to St. Augustine’s soup kitchen over the summer and have already committed to several more visits in the coming months. You may donate to this Ministry by writing a check to St. Thomas Parish---please note on the check that it is for the SOUP KITCHEN. Mark the envelope “Beyond Cornerstone service soup kitchen--- att. Alicia Your donation may be dropped off at the Parish center or placed in the Sunday collection basket. Many thanks for your continuing support through prayers and help.

St. Thomas the Apostle’s

October 12th Program on Vatican Agency’s Work in Middle East & Other Regions &

Cardinal’s Refugee Resettlement Initiative. Please mark your calendar

You are invited to an informational and discernment program that will take place in St. Peter’s room on Thursday, October 12, 2017, 7:30 p.m. to 8:45 p.m. on: the scriptural basis for “welcoming the alien and stranger”; the current circumstances of some vulnerable international regional populations by Vatican agency speakers; and, a description of Cardinal Joseph Tobin’s initiative for the resettlement of 51 refugee families by a representative from the Archdiocesan Office of Catholic Charities.

The St. Thomas ministries that are co-sponsoring this event include: The Rosary Society, Men’s Cornerstone, the Young Adult/Youth Group, and the Holy Name Society.

Speakers are experienced in refugee resettlement from the Archdiocese and in providing international aid to all from a Vatican agency, the Catholic Near East Welfare Association (CNEWA), founded by Pope Pius XI in 1926 to do pastoral and relief work in the Middle East, Northeast Africa, Eastern Europe, and India.

Recognition will be given for the local refugee resettlement efforts of Sacred Heart Church, St. Teresa of Calcutta and The Greater Bloomfield Interfaith Partnership.

No fee will be charged for attendees, but a request will be made for a free-will offering which will be split between CNEWA and the Archdiocese resettlement office.

Need Sacraments? Do you want to learn more about your faith? The RCIA is for you…and all! Are you or someone you know interested in being baptized or need to receive the sacraments of Eucharist or Confirmation? Perhaps you just want to learn more about your faith. The RCIA is the process by which adults prepare for the reception of the sacraments in a friendly, relaxed, and informal setting. It is also a way for those who have already received their sacraments of initiation to learn about their faith in a deeper way. The RCIA meetings are held every Sunday beginning Sunday, October 1st after the 9 a.m. mass in the St. Thomas room in the parish center. For more information call Bob Miller at 973.338.9190 x131.
