The Makings of a Priest – part 3. At one time Latin was a staple in high-school education and in colleges. Although Pope St. John XXIII encouraged the study of Latin, it fell off the curriculum in many semi-naries but at one time the study of this language was done during the college years. It was necessary because up un-til “recent history” seminary classes were taught in Latin. I remember some priests, who have now gone to God, had lectures in Latin most especially if studying in Rome. In general, many universities taught in Latin too. As a side note, up until World War I most universities in our coun-try gave lectures mostly in German. The study of Latin is making a come-back as well as Greek which was also a staple in the seminary system at one time; remember the New Testament was originally written in Greek. I did not study Greek and Latin was optional, which I took.
Some seminaries keep some old traditions practiced as the men move into Major Seminary. One is the “Cutting of the Tie” college seminarians traditionally wore a black suit and tie and as they moved into the Major Seminary the tie was cut off as a sign that you will not be wearing a tie any more. This was followed by “Cassock Day” were the men would receive their cassock and surplice which would be-come standard garb. My seminary did not follow these traditions and we did not make use of the cassock, only Master of Ceremonies did. I was a Master of Ceremonies and our daily dress was the clerical collar shirt. After a well deserved rest over the summer and hanging his B.A. (or as my degree is technically an A.B. since is called Artium Baccalaurei) on the wall the college semi-narian moves into the Major Seminary or “Theologate” to study theology and continue priestly formation. Theology, is the study of the nature of God and religious belief. The-ology classes would include: Church History which is bro-ken down into three stages: Early, Medieval, and Modern. Classes in Canon Law, usually three semesters with one being on Canon Law and Marriage, these courses are on the Laws of the Church; to note the official translation of Canon Law is Latin. Biblical studies: The Pentateuch – the first five books of the Old Testament, a class on Wisdom Literature, the Psalms, the Synoptic Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke), a course on St. John’s Gospel, Acts of the Apostles, and Revelation. I had a class on the Spirituality of John also. Classes in Moral Theology, Christology: theology relating to the person and nature of Christ, a course on the Trinity, a semester on the Eucharist, Sacraments, Ecclesiology: the study of the nature and structure of the Church, Mis-sion and Ministry: the purpose of the Church. I myself had a class on the Protestant Reformation. Classes on Liturgy which include church music, several practicum classes: the “how to” of liturgy. Pastoral Counseling and Psychol-ogy classes are offered. Some seminaries offer various electives too. As an elective I had organ classes. A priest I know took a course in Icon Writing; all depends on what the seminary can offer. Also, we were required to take two semesters in Spanish. More to come… Rev. Fr. Stephen A. Saffron
