Catholic charities

Due to the unprecedented requests for assistance from Catholic Charities’ food pantries and in order to fulfill our obligations to the poor, Bishop Serratelli has authorized a Diocesan-wide food collection in all parishes and agencies on the Feast of Corpus Christi, Saturday/Sunday, May 28-29, 2016. Saint Joseph Parish has been asked to provide canned meats or canned fish of any kind. Of course, cash donations are also gratefully accepted. Please mark Saturday and Sunday, May 28/29 as the Food Collection Day to help those in need in our Diocesan community of Morris, Passaic and Sussex counties.

Saint Joseph Church’s Thrift Shop will be having a $5.00 bag sale May 19-21. The sale is on clothing only (which excludes jewelry, shoes and handbags). The shop is located beneath the church and is open Thursday and Friday from 10:00am to 4:00pm, and Saturday 9:30am to 12:30pm. You would be surprised how much we can fit in a paper bag and costs only $5.00!

Women’s retreat

Sacred Heart Spirituality Center will hold its Women’s Retreat the weekend of June 10-12, 2016. The theme for this retreat is: “Live Mercy!” It will focus on how God’s abundant and unconditional Mercy towards us calls forth a gospel response to live mercy ever deeper in our own lives. A weekend experience creates a special bond and climate among the retreatants and allows the time to relax and recharge. However, if someone is unable to make the entire weekend, there is the possibility of coming on Saturday only. Please call 973-383-2620 or email [email protected] for more information.

The registration form is on the website at : sacredheartspiritualitycenter.org.

WEDDINGS CONTINUED...

Now that we have heard the negative side of weddings, I have to give some space for the positive side as well. This past weekend I celebrated my first wedding since I arrived here in Newton. The couple was truly engaged (no pun intended) in their ceremony as well were their families. The couple made this day very special by choosing their own Readings from Holy Scripture, they choose friends that read for the ceremony, they had their own Trio play beautiful music and most of all, they looked really happy (well, a few tears were shed, but they were very much in love). It was a very positive afternoon first and foremost because this young couple (like many others) had the opportunity to be married civilly or at a “destination” spot, but instead chose to profess their vows before God, their priest and their families and friends in a Catholic Church. I commend this young couple for making this decision and for taking the time to make God part of their relationship. As I shared with them in my homily, “I have no magic words or special prayers to make your marriage successful, but I can assure you, if you keep God in the equation of your relationship, He will never let you down and will always be by your sides.” This truly was a wonderful celebration of our faith, of the love that this couple have shared and God willing, will share for many years to come. At one point during the ceremony I asked how many people were married. I was amazed at how many people raised their hands. And after some questioning, I found out that the groom’s paternal Grandparents were married for sixty (60) years! I asked them “certainly, you know that as Saint Paul said: ‘Love is always patient and kind?’ They laughed and I had them stand to show us what the example of sixty years of married life looked like. All in the church applauded! So, on behalf of Saint Joseph Church, we welcome Mr. & Mrs. Charles Van Dyk IV to the ranks of those married in our church. We also thank them for taking the time to make our parish community a part of their special day as

we promise to pray for them; even if they are poor or rich, if they are sick or in good health, that we promise to love them and honor them as a married couple for all their married life. If you are thinking about getting married, I would suggest that you become part of a worshipping community that fits your needs. You must go where you are fed. As I liken parish life to fine dining, you have to go where there is good “service” and good food! We like to remind ourselves (and others) that “All Are Welcome” here at Saint Joseph Church and pray that you too will keep God in the equation of your married, your single, your dating and even your childhood lives!

In the beginning God created the world and said “It is not good for man to be alone” that is why we have the Sacrament of Marriage and for those who are not married, the gift of the Church from the Lord Himself, to support us, to love us and feed us with the gift of unconditional love. Let us take to heart the words of the Blessed Mother when the wine ran out at the marriage feast at Cana “Do whatever He (the Lord) tells you” (John 2:5).
