THE EPIPHANY OF THE LORD
January 3, 2016
First Reading: Isaiah 60:1-6 Isaiah rejoices over the light and glory that will shine upon Jerusalem. He describes how the wealth of nations will be brought to Jerusalem, and travelers will arrive bearing gifts and praising God.
Second Reading: Ephesians 3:2-3a, 5-6 Paul explains to the Ephesians that the Gentiles are now co-heirs with the Jews. Through Jesus, they became members of the same body. Therefore, they would receive everything God had promised the Jewish converts if they followed Christ's teachings.
Gospel: Matthew 2:1-12 Astrologers from the east came looking for the newborn king of the Jews, which greatly disturbed King Herod. Herod wanted to kill Jesus, and asked the astrologers to return and tell him where Jesus was. The astrologers found Jesus and brought him gifts, but received a message in a dream telling them not to return to Herod.

NOCTURNAL ADORATION
“Tantum Ergo Sacramentum, veneremur cernui” (On bended knee, let us worship so great a Sacrament). St. Thomas Aquinas wrote those words in a hymn to express our proper attitude toward Jesus in the Eucharist. Come spend some time in worship of this great gift and mystery. Nocturnal Adoration will be held at Saint Aedan’s on Friday, January 8th between 8 PM & 11PM. (Change to second Friday due to January 1st Holy Day.)
THE FEAST OF THE EPIPHANY LITTLE CHRISTMAS
The Feast of the Epiphany of our Lord Jesus Christ is one of the oldest Christian feasts in our church calendar. Epiphany actually comes from a Greek verb which means “to reveal” or “show forth.” All of the various events celebrated by the Feast of the Epiphany are, in fact, revelations of Christ to men. In more ancient times, Epiphany originally celebrated four different events, in the following order of importance: the Baptism of the Lord: Christ’s first miracle, the changing of the water into wine at the Wedding in Cana. The miracle reveals Christ’s divinity; At the Nativity, the angels bear wines to Christ and the shepherds, representing the people of Israel, bow down before Him; and the Visitation of the Magi, Christ’s divinity is revealed to the Gentiles – the other nations of the earth. Over the centuries, the various celebrations were separated in order to better focus on the unique nature of each of them. So, the church of today celebrates, in order: the Nativity or Birth of Christ; the Feast of the Holy Family; the Epiphany and then concludes the Christmas season with John’s Baptism of Jesus in the Jordan which, this year, falls on Sunday, January 10th. In some places in Europe, the celebration of the Epiphany is at least as important as the celebration of Christmas. In Italy and other Mediterranean countries, Christians exchange gifts on Epiphany – the day on which the Wise men brought their gifts to the Christ Child – while in Northern Europe, it is not unusual to give gifts on both Christmas and Epiphany (often with smaller gifts on each of the twelve days of Christmas in between.) (Shush – don’t tell this to the kids!)
A HAPPY AND BLESSED NEW YEAR TO ALL! Monsignor Nevin, Father Palatucci, Deacon Maher and the entire parish staff of Saint Aedan’s would like to wish you and your loved ones a most blessed, happy and healthy 2016. It is our privilege to minister to you in the good times and the bad, the happy and the sad. During this New Year, may God bless us one and all. _________________________________________SUPPORT OUR UNIFORMED MEN AND WOMEN

WE MUST ALSO RECEIVE YOUR CHECK BY JAN. 13th. The seats are $30.00 for adult; $15.00 for student. Clergy ride free, but you still must make a reservation so that we know you’re coming. PATRIOTIC ROSARY
There will be no Patriotic Rosary for the month of January. The next one will be on Tuesday, February 9th.
PARISH HOSPITALITY COMMITTEE
"St. Aedan's has a parish Hospitality Committee which helps set up for and provide refreshments at certain parish events. Many of you have attended some of these parish events over the past few months. This ministry has really helped foster a sense of community among the members of our parish family. If you would be interested in helping with this "sweet" ministry, please email Marie Maher at [email protected].
NO JANUARY PANCAKE BREAKFAST There will be no Pancake Breakfast for January. The next Pancake Breakfast will be on February 7th. Additional Adult volunteers are needed and would be more than welcome so that we can continue to offer this very special parish event for years to come. Please call Ray Stormes at 323-9415.
MANY THANKS!! The St Aedan's St. Vincent de Paul' Food Pantry wishes to thank all those who donated to our Food Drive and Giving Tree this past Thanksgiving and Christmas. Your generosity allowed us to assist many of our needy neighbors with Toys, Food, Appliances, Personal Care Items, Clothes, Gift Cards, Utilities and Companionship. This did not happen by itself. Our Food Pantry operates 12 months a year, we ask you for your Continued Support. “When I was hungry, When I was thirsty, When I was naked…….That you did unto me.” Once Again, Thank you, please do your best to keep Christ in Christmas at home and with all those you meet during this joyous season. In Christ, Deacon Jim Maher
A REMINDER TO CELIAC SUFFERERS Please inquire about our low gluten hosts. We obtain them from the Benedictine Sisters of Perpetual Adoration and the hosts have a gluten content of just 0.01%. The hosts are highly acclaimed by celiac research specialists for use by all but the severest cases of celiac disease. If interested, please speak with Msgr. Nevin and, of course, consult with your own physician.
FEEDING OUR NEIGHBORS DRIVE Sunday, January 24th – Sunday, January 31st
Timothy Cardinal Dolan is calling on all Catholics to Feed Our Neighbors in New York and respond to the overwhelming need we are facing right here in our New York Community. During this special week, in January, every Catholic individual and household in our parish and throughout the Archdiocese is invited to join with friends and neighbors in helping to feed the hungry of our local town as well as Rockland County communities. How can you do this? FEED THE BIG WHITE BOX. Bring non-perishable foods to our Feeding Our Neighbors COLLECTION BOX which will located in our church lobby. Next week’s bulletin will provide a list of appropriate food items. Supporting those who are in need comes rather naturally to us, here at Saint Aedan’s, because we, as a parish family, sponsor a year-round food pantry. We realize that people need to eat every day, every week, every month of the year. Your donations of food will support needy individuals and families we support both our local parish food pantry as well as the CSSSR pantry located in North Rockland. Both pantries will share in the food donations you bring here to church. The children in our Parish Religious Education Program (PREP) will also be involved in this Archdiocesan-wide effort. All of us, young and old, need to be encouraged to respond to Christ’s message of “When you fed or clothed my needy brothers and sisters, that you did unto me.”
ADULT ALTAR MINISTRY
We are always grateful to our volunteers who jump up to assist the priest at our weekday masses. At this time, we are inviting all of our adult women and men to join our new Adult Altar Ministry which will be exercised at all of our parish funeral masses and services. Don’t worry, after some brief training, you will be all set to go. If interested, please contact the parish house at 735-7405.
RELIGIOUS EDUCATION
Our Parish Religious Education Program (PREP) classes will resume this Monday, January 4th. _____________________________________

The world was a playground for Mickey, a naive Irish American kid bored with his life. His father served in World War II, his brother was a Marine in Vietnam; now it was his turn. His 365 days in Vietnam builds in torment until an attack on a bunker complex in Cambodia. Wounded, his friend captured, he becomes a tormented survivor knowing he is always just a heartbeat from death.
In this memoir, set as deeply in his mind as in the Southeast Asian jungle, a young American soldier embarks
on a journey to a war that, for him, will never be over.
