Did you know…? The devotion to the Infant of Prague, as we know it today, origi-

nated in a neighborhood in Colombia called “20 de Julio” with the

arrival of the Salesian Father Juan del Rizzo. When he saw that

the people had been forbidden to use the image of the Child of

Prague, he ordered to create a very beautiful image with a crafts-

man. In Colombia, as in other parts of the world, they celebrate

the Infant of Prague festival on July 20th; the formal celebration

of this holiday is the first Sunday in September.

Our Gospel speaks of Jesus multiplying the loaves and fishes for the hungry crowd. The main point is not the sight of the apostles serving the crowds although that is a wonder considering how reluctant the apostles were to get involved in solving this problem. Nor is the main point even the fact that Jesus apparently performed a miracle here. No, the main fact is that Jesus shows mercy, has compassion on the crowd. And he wants us to act just as he did, compassionately, mercifully.

Notice also that there is a boy in today’s gospel who is willing to share what he has with the hungry. There are some commentators who have a different take on the story than the one we usually hear. They say that the real miracle in the multiplication of the loaves and fishes was that Jesus’ effect on the crowds encouraged them, like the boy, to share what they brought with one another. The result was that there was more than enough for all to have their fill.

It’s hard to say what actually happened, but don’t you at least find that interpretation in-teresting? Those who have, share with those who don’t. That kind of behavior is at the very heart of Jesus’ teaching. What changes must we make so that others might have at least some? What changes must our nation make -- in the light of our disproportionate consumption of the earth’s resources, our wealth and the high poverty rates in our country and throughout the world so that our goods and resources can be shared equitably?

As I write this we are in the midst of our week long planning sessions for the par-ish. The sessions have been going well. The parish staff and parish council helped to plan these sessions to give all in the parish an opportunity to share their ideas on how we as a parish can better serve the people in our community. Given all that has happened this past year in our church and in society it is clear that we need to reflect upon how we can better meet the needs of all. Our plan is to take all that we learn and hear in these meetings and continue the discussion in the months ahead. Thanks to all who participated.

You may have heard that last week Pope Francis issued a “Motu Proprio” in which he set forth new guidelines regarding the use of the Roman liturgy prior to 1970. This document limits the celebration of the Latin Mass. I encourage all to read the document. I am sure some people are happy about this and others are disappointed. I think what is most im-portant about Pope Francis’ actions is how and why he did this. All need to keep in mind that Pope Francis over the past few years has asked various Vatican departments to consult the lo-cal bishops as to how the use of the Latin Mass was working in their dioceses. Pope Benedict when he was Pope said that the use of the Latin Mass, which he implemented, should be re-viewed. Apparently Pope Francis got a lot of input. After this consultation he made the deci-sion after consulting the various Vatican departments of the Roman Curia. In a letter that he sent with the Moto Propio he explained that the reason he made the change was because the celebration of the Latin Mass had in some cases caused disunity in the Church. He empha-sized that the Eucharist is a sacrament of unity and for this reason the use of the Latin Mass was not bringing about greater unity which was the hope of Pope Benedict. So, regardless of whether we support the actions of Pope Francis or not we have to accept the fact that it was a kind of discernment in which the Pope consulted widely, listened to the Spirit and decided.

Finally, remember your parish when you go on vacation! Even though you are away, the expenses in the parish remain the same. You can use the online giving method to make sure that your support to our parish continues. Or, you can bring your envelopes to us when you return.
