SACRED ART AND MUSIC. All are invited to an extraordinary night of Sacred Art and Music on Thursday, April 4th at 7:30 PM in Saint Gregory the Great Church, Bellerose. Sponsored by Queens Dean-ery #5, we will welcome Dr. Francis Greene, Professor Emeritus of Fine Arts at St. Francis College, Brooklyn, and the combined choirs of Queens Deanery #5. To-gether they will offer famous works of art and sacred music highlighting the Passion of our Lord Jesus Christ. Invite family and friends, neighbors and guests to this truly uplifting and spiritual experience.

The movie, UNPLANNED, tells the powerful, true story of Abby Johnson, a former Planned Parent-hood clinic director who, after being involved in up-wards of 22,000 abortions, experienced a life-changing moment while witnessing a live, ultrasound-guided abortion procedure on a 13-week-old baby. Abby has become one of the most active Pro-Life speakers in our country. Please be advised that this film contains some intense scenes. On 3/28, there will be a special showing at AMC Race-way 10 Theatre-1025 Corporate Drive, Westbury, NY 11590. The movie starts at 7pm. Net proceeds from ticket sales will be donated to The Bridge to Life or-ganization and reserved towards the purchase of an ultrasound machine, to be donated to an as yet deter-mined pregnancy center. Seating is limited. Tickets need to be purchased in advance. The minimum re-quested donation per ticket is $15.

Munera: Teach, Govern, and Sanctify. Praised Be Jesus Christ! The old expression “Charity begins at home” re-minds us of two donation boxes we have in the back of our church and the two causes we support regu-larly. The first is the St. Michael’s Food Pantry in Flushing. This food pantry feeds over 400 fami-lies as well as the homeless on a regular basis. The second is Pennies For LIFE; monies collected in this box are disbursed in January and June to those groups helping women choose life who may be con-templating abortion and supporting other Pro-Life needs. These two causes supported by our parish help us as individuals to extend our charity to those in need. Lent is that time of year where we are all encouraged to help those in need. The Gospels teach us that we should help those in need and we hear lines such as “give without ex-pecting return”, and “if asked to give your coat give your tunic too”. The act of giving is really easy! We can give to the causes I mentioned above, we can support St. Jude Children’s Hospital, Wounded Vet-erans, we can make clothing donations when we cleanout our closets. There are many organizations we can support which do good work. The Gospels and Corporal Works of Mercy also teach us to visit those in prison. Now this one is almost impossible to do due to security. Lent may offer us the opportu-nity to pray for the conversion of those who are in prison and for the well being of those who work in our prison systems. Speaking of imprisonment… It was announced a few days ago that Jozsef Cardinal Mindszenty who was the Prince Primate, Archbishop of Esztergom in Hungary was declared Venerable and a cause for his canonization has been opened. There is also a case open for Stefan Cardinal Wyszynski of Poland who was known as the Primate of the Millennium. Both of these Cardinals were imprisoned and re-mind of those who have been and are unjustly im-prisoned and in need of prayer and freedom. These two Cardinals who were known for their “heroic virtue” can inspire us during this Lent to be women and men of “heroic virtue” too and challenge us to live the Gospel more fully every day. Continued prayers for a Holy Lent, Rev. Fr. Stephen A. Saffron
