Twenty-Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time
SPIRITUAL COMMUNION For those who can not come Sunday
Morning for Communion My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love You above all thing, and I desire to re-ceive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. AMEN
GOD REVEALED TO THE NATIONS What wonderful images we have today of the reign of God! Isaiah speaks to us of a great feast—a heavenly feast—a feast of abundance with rich foods and choice wines. It is the Lord’s own affair, Isaiah explains, when God will unite all nations, dry every tear, and destroy death for-ever. Then, too, will the entire earth rejoice in the Lord and bask in God’s saving grace. Jesus speaks of heaven in terms of a feast as well. Here, the kingdom of heaven is likened to a king’s wedding feast given for his son. This is a feast of abundance also, with the fattened cattle prepared just so. But many of the people invited don’t want to come, so the king invites anyone who would honor his son by their presence there. And Paul tells us that whether we live abundantly or in humble circumstances, we can do all things in the Lord who strengthens us.

SAINTS AND SPECIAL OBSERVANCES Sunday: Twenty-eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time Monday: Columbus Day; Canadian Thanksgiving Day Wednesday: St. Callistus I Thursday: St. Teresa of Jesus Friday: St. Hedwig; St. Margaret Mary Alacoque; National Boss’s Day
St. Hedwig Patroness of Bavaria, Silesia, Widows & Others
Feast Day: October 16 Born in Bavaria around 1174, Hedwig was the daughter of the Count of Andechs. She grew up at the monastery of Kitzingen. When she was 12, she obeyed her parents’ wishes and was married to Henry of Silesia. The couple had seven children and in 1020, Henry succeeded his father as Duke of Silesia (in modern-day Poland). Hedgwig’s wis-dom and holiness had a profound influence on her husband. He respected his wife’s dedication to God and became devout himself. Early in his rule, she encouraged him to found a monastery of Cistercian nuns at Trebnitz, which was the first women’s convent in Silesia. They al-so founded two hospitals, one of which was for lepers, and established many new monasteries, helping advance civilization in their country. In 1209, Hedwig and Henry took a vow of chastity. Hedwig had always lived simply, but now she extended her visits to the Trebnitz monastery, where her life became even more austere. When Henry died in 1238, Hedwig moved into the monastery and adopted the gray habit of the Cistercian Order. She used her wealth only to help others. No one who approached her ever left empty-handed. Hedwig continued to serve the poor and the sick until she died. For her generous spirit, Hedwig was canonized less than 30 years after her death.
Prayer to St. Hedwig Lord, You have filled my life with abundance and I am grateful for all Your blessings. Help me to show my gratitude to You by sharing my abundance with those in need. Open my ears that I may hear their cries. Open my eyes that I may see their tears. Open my heart that I may feel their suffering. Open my arms that I may reach out to help. AMEN
