Dear Brothers and Sisters,
Peace and Joy in Our Lord Jesus!
As we celebrate Respect Life throughout the month of October, Our Lord reminds us of the sacredness of every life.
Catholics have always held and will always preach the value of human life. The Catechism of the Catholic Church states
that:
“Human life is sacred because from its beginning it involves the creative action of God and it remains
forever in a special relationship with the Creator, who is its sole end. God alone is the Lord of life from
its beginning until its end: no one can under any circumstance claim for himself the right directly to
destroy an innocent human being” (CCC 2258). And “Human life must be respected and protected
absolutely from the moment of conception. From the first moment of his existence, a human being must be
recognized as having the rights of a person - among which is the inviolable right of every innocent being
to life.” (CCC 2270)
As we read in Psalm 139:
Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you… My frame
was not hidden from you, when I was being made in secret, intricately wrought in the depths of the earth.
Because Our Loving God has created every human being we are sacred and precious – made in God’s image and likeness.
We are a reflection of God. As a reflection of God, we have been entrusted from the moment of conception until our
natural death with a unique mission and vocation in life that is life-giving. What is that mission? We are invited to bring
others to this life-giving realization of the love of God for each and every person from the moment of conception until
natural death.
Introducing others to Our Lord involves true love. Introducing others to Our Lord involves real sacrifice. When there is
true love and real sacrifice then there is the promise of eternal life. Please see the next page of this bulletin for a calendar
of parish events and daily opportunities to strengthen your faith and your resolve to protect all human life and to build up
the Kingdom of God.

Arizona Rosary Celebration Sunday, October 18 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM
Celebrate Our Lady, Undoer of Knots, with the 2020 Arizo-na Rosary Celebration! The event will be live streamed starting at 2 p.m. with Bishop Olmsted presiding and will include a recorded message from Auxiliary Bishop Rodri-guez of the Archdiocese of Denver. The event will include remarks from Bishop Olmsted, the guest speaker’s mes-sage, exposition of the Blessed Sacrament, recitation of the Rosary, and Benediction. Music will be presented by the
beautiful voices from Villa de Marie Academy. The Tucson and Phoenix programs will be shorter due to the absence of the blessing processions, and overall participation at the venues will belimited to the minimum number of participants required to perform the Liturgy. The Culture of Life Committee’s Baby Bottle Drive is in its 10th year and supports local crisis pregnancy centers. To date, we have donated over $30,000 in financial support to help women, the preborn, and their families embrace life. Your support is gratefully appreciated and has helped many women, babies, and families in the Phoenix area.

Heavenly Father, the beauty and dignity of human life was the
crowning of your creation. You further ennobled that life
when your Son became one with us in his incarnation. Help
us to realize the sacredness of human life and to respect it
from the moment of conception until the last moment at
death. Give us courage to speak with truth and love and with
conviction in defense of life. Help us to extend the gentle hand
of mercy and forgiveness to those who do not reverence your
gift of life. To all, grant pardon for the times we have failed to
be grateful for your precious gift of life or to respect it in
others. We ask this in Jesus' Name. Amen.
Prayer Group Meets at Planned Parenthood
It started with a small group of teens who are passionate about
praying for the protection of the unborn. They
began meeting every Sunday afternoon to pray outside of a local
Planned Parenthood clinic. When word got out, their families and
others were inspired to join them. Now they are extending an
invitation to you. All are welcome.

This weekend, the Culture of Life Committee will kick off our Annual Baby Bottle Drive to support one of the Arizona’s pregnancy centers. The baby bottles are provided as an easy bank to add your change, bills, or checks (made to: Life Connections). A WeShare link will also be available on our St. Bernadette website for your convenience. Due to COVID 19 and its significant effects on the economy and community donations, this year's recipient is Life Connections Pregnancy Resource Center, in Prescott Valley. We appreciate your support of the life affirming centers that give assistance to women and families in their time of need.

What is the message of the parable of the vineyard?
Jesus' story about an absentee landlord and his not-
so-good tenants would have made sense to his
audience. The hills of Galilee were lined with
numerous vineyards, and it was quite common for
the owners to let out their estates to tenants. Many
did it for the sole purpose of collecting rent.
The Lord's vineyard in the house of his people
Why did Jesus' story about wicked tenants cause offense to the scribes
and Pharisees? It contained both a prophetic message and a warning.
Isaiah had spoken of the house of Israel as "the vineyard of the
Lord" (Isaiah 5:7). Jesus' listeners would have likely understood this
parable as referring to God's dealing with a stubborn and rebellious
people.
This parable speaks to us today as well. It richly conveys some important
truths about God and the way he deals with his people. First, it tells us of
God's generosity and trust. The vineyard is well equipped with
everything the tenants need. The owner went away and left the vineyard
in the hands of the tenants. God, likewise trusts us enough to give us
freedom to run life as we choose. This parable also tells us of God's
patience and justice.
Not once, but many times he forgives the tenants their debts. But while
the tenants take advantage of the owner's patience, his judgment and
justice prevail in the end.
Gift of the kingdom
Jesus foretold both his death on the cross and his ultimate triumph. He
knew he would be rejected and put to death, but he also knew that would
not be the end. After rejection would come glory - the glory of his
resurrection from the grave and his ascension to the right hand of the
Father in heaven.
The Lord blesses his people today with the gift of his kingdom - a
kingdom of righteousness, peace, and joy in the Holy Spirit. And he
promises that we will bear much fruit if we abide in him (see John 15:1-
11). He entrusts his gifts and grace (unmerited favor and blessing) to
each of us and he gives us work to do in his vineyard - the body of Christ
in our midst today. He promises that our labor for him will not be in vain
if we persevere with faith to the end (see 1 Corinthians 15:58).
We can expect trials and even persecution. But in the end we will see
triumph. Do you follow and serve the Lord Jesus with joyful hope and
confidence in the victory he has won for you and the gift of abundant
new life in the Holy Spirit?

merciful redeemer, friend, and brother, may we know you more clearly,
love you more dearly, and follow you more nearly, for your own

COVID Guidelines
Activities are limited to 50 or fewer people (including all staff, volunteers, and participants). (This limitation does not apply to Masses, which may allow up to 25% of the seating capacity of the church, subject to physical distancing and other requirements.)
All must practice proper physical distancing and stay at least 6 feet away from other participants and activity facilitators. Activities should take place in a large enough area to permit physical distancing at all times and to promote good ventilation.
Limit areas where large groups can congregate, and avoid bottleneck areas – lines for check in, gathering around restroom facilities, stairwells, parking areas, and elevators.
All staff, volunteers, and participants should wear a face mask/facial covering while on parish/school property when physical distancing is not possible. Please follow the Diocese of Phoenix Update for Use of Face Masks/Face Coverings on Parish/School Properties and for Mass released on June 19, 2020. Parishes and schools must follow any local requirements that have been put in place.
Provide access to soap and water for handwashing and/or an alcohol-based hand sanitizer, and encourage good hygiene practices before, during and after activities. Do not touch eyes, nose, or mouth.
Communicate with participants (and parents, if applicable) the expectations and guidance prior to participation. Stay home if sick. Those at higher risk for severe illness should avoid attending/participating. People at higher risk for severe illness include adults 65 or older and people of any age who have serious underlying medical conditions..
Ensure that all participants understand that we are taking these precautions to help reduce the risk of transmission. Despite these efforts, however, during this pandemic there remains a risk of exposure any time there is contact with others, such as when out in public or in group settings. Those who are vulnerable, sick, or concerned about exposure should stay home and limit contact with others. Efforts should be made to provide opportunities to participate virtually for those who cannot attend or choose not to attend in person.
Ultimately, everyone is responsible for their own personal choices, including accepting the risks of exposure by participating in parish and school activities. All who choose to participate should openly acknowledge and accept the risks inherent in participation.

Every November since 2010, the Tribunal of the Diocese of Phoenix has offered an Annulment Information Seminar at the Diocesan Pastoral Center for those interested in learning about annulments. Unfortunately, the 2020 seminar has been cancelled due to ongoing COVID-19 restrictions for public gatherings. The Tribunal of the Diocese of Phoenix is committed to providing all those interested in pursuing an annulment with all the information and guidance needed to discern and petition for this process. Parish nullity ministers are provided with extensive training to be present to those Catholics and non-Catholics seeking to petition for annulments.
