Roman Road London E3 SOLD This wonderful three-bedroom house can be found on historic Roman Road in Bow. An artful renovation by Jack Cruickshank Architects has introduced colourful modern interventions to the Victorian interiors, creating a series of elegant interior spaces. The house has a private south-facing garden, with a newly finished studio room, and a large cellar. This house is positioned just west of Roman Road market, and is of the lovely two-storey period houses that define the East End vernacular. The house measures over 1,200 sq ft internally, and the interior spaces have been imaginatively rethought to make sense for modern life. Using a palette of pink, green and deep red inspired by Hieronymus Bosch’s ‘The Garden of Earthly Delights’ the current owner has transformed the ground floor spaces, creating an open sense of flow while maintaining a distinct sensibility in each room. themodernhouse.com [email protected] 020 3795 5920

Entry is on the ground floor, and a hallway leads directlyinto the dining room. This space, painted deep red withblue woodwork, retains its period proportions. Throghoutthe house any period features have been restored, andcarefully-chosen alternatives introduced where they arenone. As such there are reclaimed Georgian shutters,cast-iron radiators and a gilt fireplace in the wonderfullybright living room. Black-painted original floorboards rununderfoot, providing a sense of connectedness with thedining room.

The newly-extended rear of the house takes inspirationfrom the lighter tones in Bosch’s painting, with soft pinkwalls and a green chequerboard linoleum floor. This is avoluminous space, with a large kitchen and a furtherreception room beyond it, which is framed by Crittal doorsonto the garden. The kitchen is fitted in aluminium, withItalian stone worktops and contrasting handles.

Outside, the garden is shaded by two beautiful fruit trees, and a gravel path leads to the summer house. This has bothheating and mains electricity, and could be well-used as ahome gym or office.

The red-hued hallway leads upstairs, where there are threebedrooms and a family bathroom. Each bedroom hasbespoke joinery and painted original floorboards underfoot.

Victoria Park, home to Pavilion Café and ChisenhaleGallery, is a five-minute walk away. Just the other side ofthe locally-loved green space, Victoria Park Village has awonderful local food and drink scene, with Ginger Pigbutchers on Lauriston Road, Bottle Apostle and JonathanNorris Fishmonger’s. This part of town has some excellentpubs, and there are also many lovely parks.
