AN EPISTLE TO PARENTS

The article below was written by me on October 23, 2011. I decided to rerun it in light of Pope Francis’ World Meeting of Families. This column is a little different from the usual and maybe a bit more difficult be-cause it requires some degree of introspection. It has to do with taking a good look at your own family and trying to see if any changes should be made. I think it is fair to say that most people find change challenging and even irksome. We all get used to things as they are and get quite comfortable with the status quo. That’s true for pastors, parents, teachers—and for that matter just about everybody. Over a period of time inertia sets in and time just goes by and few, if any changes are made. I know that priests, especially younger ones, are often frustrated when they want to introduce some new program in a parish only to be told that no inno-vation is needed. Often enough the response from the crusty old pastor (not me, of course) is a resounding “We’ve always done it that way.” And the case is closed! Families are very human institutions and as such have their good points and bad. In all probability, your family is very good and is a loving and supportive structure. Sometimes, however, that is just not the situation at all. Let me give you a few rather classic examples of family problems that can be cured and changed with realistic effort. In some families there is a significant lack of love and affection. While some members may feel that they really belong to a close knit family, others may feel something like outsiders. They perceive that they are not appreciated and that their opinion is not really valued. Often they are put down and it is very clear that other family members are much more impor-tant and really count. It must hurt a great deal. It is important to remember that each person has his or her own dignity and should be accorded respect. In some families there is a climate of anger and hostility. This is certainly no way to live. In other families people yell and scream at one another and even curse. Not a pleasant atmosphere at all. And, of course, there is always the family in which continual comparisons are made about the children. Those who come out on the wrong side of the comparison are often broken-hearted. They can’t understand why they don’t measure up. Add to these family situations are the tragedy of alcoholism, warring parents, loneliness, lack of warmth and emotional support and a host of other domestic maladies that make life less than pleasant. If children are to have emotional and psychological stability, they should grow up in an atmosphere of peace instead of endless quarreling and bickering. The parents should not be overbearing mar-tinets who constantly criticize and even berate their children. Nor should the parents have unrealistic expectations. There is much to be said for accepting each child as he or she is.

Families should be places of unlimited love, affection and acceptance. Children should feel that no matter how they mess up, mom and dad will always be there for them with open arms and hearts that manifest the forgiveness ever present in the heart of Jesus. True Catholics are living, shining examples of compassion and understanding—not heartless disciplinarians who have forgotten their own problems and human-ity. It goes without saying that every home should be a place of encouragement. And it will always remain true that the best way parents can love their children is to love each other. That was the advice of Bishop Fulton J. Sheen and it will always be true. In Jesus and Mary, Monsignor James. M. McDonald

THE LITURGY CORNER Welcome to The Liturgy Corner. Did you ever wonder why we Catholics do cer-tain things, use certain things, what the priest wears, or why? This column will try to answer those questions. If there is something you want to ask, please leave a note in the box at the rear of the church or drop it off at the rectory office. For today: Why does the priest wear different colored vestments? There are 6 pre-scribed colors: white, red, green, violet, rose, and black. The primary times these colors are used is as follows.

White is worn on Trinity Sunday, the feasts of Our Lord, except those of His Passion, the feasts of the Blessed Virgin, angels, confessors, virgins and women, who are not martyrs, the Nativity of St. John the Baptist, the feast of St. John the Evangelist, All Saints, and for occasions such as weddings and special church functions. Red is used the week of Pentecost, on the feasts of Christ's Passion and His Precious Blood, the Finding and Elevation of the Cross, and the feasts of Apostles and martyrs. Violet is used dur-ing Advent and Lent. Black is used on Good Friday, and green is used on Sundays called “ordinary time”, that is most of the year outside of Advent and Lent and those special occasions calling for particular col-ors. Rose is used only for Laetare and Gaudete Sundays which occur in the middle of Lent and Advent respectively. Think of white as purity, holiness, red as passion, martyrdom, the fire of the Holy Spirit, and violet as penance or preparation. The violet of Advent is often more rich, shading toward purple reflecting the royal nature of the birth of Christ, and the violet of Lent is shaded more toward blue or gray reflecting the penitential season. Rose is a sign of hope in both penitential seasons – we were halfway through. So now you know!

QUOTES FROM POPE FRANCIS ON RELIGIOUS FREEDOM “Nor, in writing to you, can I remain silent about the members of other reli-gious and ethnic groups who are also experiencing persecution and the effects of these conflicts. Every day I follow the new reports of the enormous suffer-

ing endured by many people in the Middle East. I think in particular of the children, the young mothers, the elderly, the homeless and all refugees, the starving and those facing the prospect of a hard winter without an adequate shelter. The suffering cries out to God and it calls for our commitment to prayer and concrete efforts to help in any way possi-ble. I want to express to all of you my personal closeness and solidarity, as well as that of the whole Church, and to offer you a word of consolation and hope.” December 21, 2014.

LIGHTHOUSE CATHOLIC MEDIA While I am writing this I am watching the Holy Father’s visit to our country. What a wonderful experience! His homilies, his remarks off his prepared text are so full of wisdom, when he speaks to young people he gives them such guidance as to how to

experience life to the fullest while still living in the presence of the Lord. He makes Christ alive in his words. Christ would talk like this if we are willing to listen to Him. The next few days that Pope Francis will spend in this country, are going to be a tremendous gift to all of us. Everyone, Catholic or not, because such a humble, loving spiritual leader speaks to all, will hear it in their own heart. This week starts October. It is an enjoyable month, the fall foliage changing colors, cooler days, apple and pumpkin picking… All of this and a month full of Church celebrations! October is a month dedicated to devotion to the Holy Rosary (October 7) and the feasts of some of the most popular saints of the Church are celebrated during this month. St. Therese the Little Flower, St. Francis of Assisi, St. Teresa of Avila, St. Margaret Mary, St. Luke, and many more. These saints come from different countries; read about the lives of these saints with your family and encourage them to pick one virtue of each saint to practice and try to implement it. This week also includes the festivity of the Guardian Angels (October 2). Every person has a guardian angel assigned to them. We should show devout gratitude to God for placing these an-gels at our service. Having a guardian should give us confidence during all life’s difficulties. It is customary to consider guardian angels for nations as well as for individuals, and in these times when the “culture of death” is overwhelming our Nation our prayers to these guardians shall in-tensify, asking their help to fulfill in America a “reform of life” so the gifts of faith, purity and peace will again be in our beloved country and in the world. Our weapons, the Holy Rosary and the prayer to Saint Michael, are powerful for peace. Prayer changes the world-prayer, fast and the outcome will alter for the best. We invite all to unite with confidence in God’s plan for our good and of our families. Again I ask you to stop by our Kiosk and pick up one CD for you and one to give away to whom the Holy Spirit will guide you! New CDs you can listen to are: “Prayer: Gateway to the Spiri-tual Life” by Archbishop Paul Coakley, “Fan or Follower? - Your Relationship with Jesus” by Jeff Cavins. “Men, Women, and the Mystery of Love” by Dr. Edward Sri. These CDs I am sure would fill a gap in your knowledge. Toti Conforti

CATHOLICS FOR FREEDOM OF RELIGION www.cffor.org

"Today also, conscience is confused with personal opinion, subjective feelings, and self-will." Blessed John Henry Newman Whom do we obey, God or government?

Pope Francis has repeatedly said that marriage must be a union of one man and one woman... Understanding this can help us as we welcome, respect, and care for gay people, on the one hand, and oppose same-sex marriage on the other hand. (irishcatholic.le; cruxnow.com, 6/29/15) "Certainly every citizen of this land, regardless of their sexual orientation, deserves to be re-spected in their person and civic life. But enshrining same-sex marriage in our constitutional system of governance has dangers that may become fully evident over time," said Cardinal Sean O'Mally, Boston. A Washington State florist was sued under a state law that denies religious liberty to businesses when it comes to participating in same-sex marriages. Barronelle Stutzman is being sued both professionally and personally - meaning that her retirement savings and personal assets are at risk - when she turned down a longtime customer who asked her to produce a flower arrange-ment for his "wedding" to another man. She instead recommended other area florists. "Government is supposed to protect freedom, not intimidate citizens into acting contrary to their faith and conscience," said her ADF Legal Counsel Jeremy Tedesco. (LifeSiteNews.com, 6/3/15) "There comes a time when one must take a position that is neither safe, nor politic, nor popular, but he must take it because conscience tells him it is right." Martin Luther King, Jr. Mark your Calendar: *October 7th at 6:00 PM on the Feast of The Holy Rosary – Rosary Rally in public view for religious freedom after the 5:30 PM Mass on the steps of St. Aidan Church. * Saturday, October 10th, 11:00 AM - 2:00 PM, Nassau Community College Center for Catho-lic Studies, Garden City, NY. Presentation: "Religion and the Civil War: Focus on the Catholic Church," keynote speaker: Brother Syriac, Chaminade H.S. faculty; free admission & lunch - must register for parking pass.

ROSARY RALLY Please join to pray for restoration and preservation of reli-gious freedom in our nation and throughout the world Wednesday, October 7th at 6:00 PM after the 5:30 PM Mass on the Feast of The Holy Rosary in public view on the steps of St. Aidan Church.

Your donation will be helping to feed the hun-gry, provide clothes and emergency support to the needy, strengthen parishes throughout our Diocese, help form our future priests and deacons and provide funding for Catholic Charities’ outstanding programs and services.
