A LOUD, RUSHING WIND
Things couldn’t have been worse. Even though Jesus had risen from the
dead and appeared to his apostles, even though Thomas had seen his wounds
and placed his hand in the side of Christ, even though the apostles had seen
Christ ascend back to heaven—it just wasn’t enough. The small band of
Christ’s followers was paralyzed by fear—they couldn’t preach, they could-
n’t teach. As a matter of fact, the one right thing they were doing was pray-
ing. Huddled in a room in Jerusalem they waited and prayed with a great
intensity—they were waiting for the Promised Spirit. They had recalled the
words of Christ: “No, I will not abandon you as orphans--I will come to you...”.
(John 14:18 )
And then there was the absolute explosion of Divine Power. The Acts of
the Apostles describes it this way: “And suddenly there came from
heaven a sound like a mighty rushing wind, and it filled the entire house
where they were sitting. And divided tongues as of fire appeared to them
and rested on each one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy
Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as they gave them utter-
ance.” (Acts 2: 2-4)
That very day—right away—the apostles went out and made 3,000 new
Catholics and the Church was born. The timid and cowardly had become
brave and felt the presence of the Holy Spirit in their hearts. They were no
longer tentative; they did not hesitate. The prospect of persecution, being
thrown in jail and innumerable inconveniences and difficulties did not
prevent them from preaching the Gospel. They did not care who stood in
their way. They fervently believed that Christ was with them and that they
possessed the Holy Spirit. Nothing could stop them. As a matter of fact, the
more the Church was persecuted, the more the Church grew and the number
of converts increased.
For 2000 years there have been all sorts of people who thought that they
had dealt a death blow to the Catholic Church. Lenin, Stalin and a multi-
tude of others thought that they would break the Church. Communists, athe-
ists, Roman Emperors, various dictators in all sorts of places and circum-
stances thought that they could end the Catholic Church. The mistake they
made was that they thought the Church was merely a human institution. They
forgot that the Church had a divine founder, Our Lord Jesus Christ, and that
the Church is continuously animated by the Holy Spirit. They forgot the promise of Jesus:
“Behold I am with you all days, even to the end of the world.” (Matt 28: 20)
Today is the Birthday of the Catholic Church. Happy Birthday to all of us! Carry the
Light of Jesus to your world.
In Jesus and Mary,
Monsignor James M. McDonald

A America’s First Freedom: Religious Liberty
On Tuesday, March 25th, the Supreme Court heard arguments regarding whether or not for-profit
companies Hobby Lobby and Conestoga Woods have the right to run their businesses according to the religious convictions
of their owners who object to providing products and services required by the Health and Human Services mandate. This is a
critical Religious Freedom issue. The ruling from the Supreme Court is expected at any time now. Please ask God to move
upon the hearts and minds of the justices, in the midst of their decision making, to preserve the First Amendment rights guar-
anteed to us, including Americans who own a business and run it in keeping with their religious beliefs. Following is a sug-
gested prayer for a decision that preserves religious liberty.
Lord God, Our Father, you are the Righteous Judge over all the earth. We pray that you will have mercy on the United States
as the Supreme Court decides a case that will shape the balance between government power and freedom of religion.
Thank you for the powerful words of the attorneys for Hobby Lobby as they argued that our free exercise
of religion includes how Christians live and work, not just what we do when we gather for worship, so that whatever we do in
word or deed, we may do it in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.
Enlighten the Justices of the Supreme Court to acknowledge that you alone are Lord of our consciences.
Give the Court humility to recognize that you are the King of Kings and Lord of Lords and that you have instituted human
government so that your people may serve the Lord without fear, in holiness and righteousness before you, all the days of our
life. And Lord, give us grace and boldness to use the religious liberty that we still have to make your truth and mercy known.
Amen.
During this Fortnight For Freedom look into your heart and decide what you can do to preserve religious
freedom. The only mistake you could make is to think you can do nothing. Pray for our country’s leaders that they may be
moved to protect our first freedom. Pray for our clergy that they may teach and inform us of the attacks on our liberty. Attend
Fortnight events and support your fellow Catholics working through Catholics for Freedom of Religion in the cause of reli-
gious liberty.
“Today we are the witnesses. We will pray and we will speak. We will act together and invite others to
join us. Our cause is a cause that is great and a truth that cannot be vanquished.” Bishop William Murphy

Eucharist. Since this devotion is about Christ’s love for us let us put our trust in

work place all those most in need of love and compassion, extending Jesus’ love
and mercy to all, and our own love for them.

INISFADA - ITS BIRTH TO ITS DEMISE
Thursday, June 12, 2014 at 7:30 PM
Manhasset Public Library
Presented by Father Damian Halligan, SJ
Inisfada means “Long Island” in Gaelic. Formerly the summer
home to Nicholas Brady, a Manhattan business man, and his
wife, Genevieve. This eighty-five room mansion in Manhasset,
Long Island sat on thirty acres of rolling lawns, beautiful formal
gardens, and stone statues. Tudor Elizabethan in style, it was
adorned with gargoyles, angels and small animals from its eaves
and corners, and included a great hall, solarium, billard room, master suites, kitchen suites, a private
chapel, secondary and tertiary staircases...everything that a Gold Coast mansion would have and more.
Details abounded—the medallion above the porte cochere depicted Mrs. Brady’s namesake, St. Gene-
vieve, and carvings of fairy tales like Old Mother Hubbard were engraved in gables on the bedrooms’
exterior. This lecture will give you a broad view of its birth to its demise.
A presentation will be given by Father Damian who served twenty years at Inisfada, 1969-76 and 1998-
2013 as a Spiritual Director. He was also in Nigeria, NY province administration, Pastor of St. Peter’s in
Jersey City, in prison ministry and pastorally in various parishes on and off of Long Island. He presently
resides at St. Aidan Parish in Williston Park, also still doing some retreat ministry.
For information please call (516) 627-2300 or go to www.manhassetlibrary.org.

LIGHTHOUSE CATHOLIC MEDIA PENTECOST! A feast of the universal Church which commemorates the De-
scent of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles, fifty days after Christ’s Resurrec-
tion. It brings the Easter season to its end. We might compare today’s feast to
that of the Epiphany; for Epiphany bears a similar relationship to Christmas
as Pentecost does to Easter.
Pentecost marks the beginning of the Church. It marks the beginning of the work of the Holy Spirit as
Jesus promised to us “He will not leave us orphans, He will send us the Comforter, who will teach us
all things!” Pentecost is the feast of the Holy Spirit. He dwells in our soul, and since Baptism He has
made our body and soul His temple.” Do you not know that you are the temple of God and the Spirit
of God dwells in you?”
Christ is our Mediator, and the Holy Spirit Guides His Church. Christ is present in the Holy Eucharist
and with the Holy Spirit sanctifies and glorifies. The Holy Spirit is the soul of Church, Christ’s mys-
tical Body. He is especially active in the confessional, “Receive the Holy Spirit, whose sins you shall
forgive, they are forgiven them.” as Jesus said. Preaching is also the work of the Holy Spirit, it is
God’s word. The Holy Mass is where we find the essential work of the Holy Spirit. In the Incarnation
the Son of God became one of us “Conceived by the Holy Spirit,” so in the Mass He is called down to
change bread and wine into Christ’s Body and Blood. If we read Colossians 2:16-17 Paul said that the Jewish feasts are an anticipation of what is to come
through Jesus Christ. We as Christians may not celebrate them, but we will gain a greater understand-
ing of the Bible and its significance. Pentecost is the feast of “SHAVUOT” (the feast of harvest). As
we read in the Acts of Apostles, devout Jews from every nation were staying in Jerusalem. The Apos-
tles were filled with the Holy Spirit which enabled them to proclaim the Word of God. The crowds
heard them speaking in different languages, they were amazed. Peter got up and preached the “Good
News” of the kingdom of God and 3000 people accepted the message of Christ, were Baptized and
added to God’s Church! The miraculous outpouring of the Holy Spirit, as we read in the books of
Acts, similarly, as we read in the Old Testament, Moses went up to Mount Sinai and the Word of
God was given to the Israelites at the feast of Shavuot, and when they accepted it became servants of
God! Jews celebrated a harvest on Shavuot, and the Church celebrated a harvest of newborn souls on
Pentecost!
Let’s celebrate Pentecost properly and let’s be convinced that the same miracle we read in the Gospel
will take place in our hearts. In the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass the Holy Spirit will be poured out on
me, one of God’s beloved Child! Pray, pray fervently, “Come Holy Spirit, fill the Hearts of your
faithful.”
In our Kiosks we have wonderful CDs which will help you in the knowledge of these marvelous facts
on our Faith! The new ones are absolute testimony of the power of the Holy Spirit to direct and focus
our search for truth. After you listen to them, give them away, the Holy Spirit will complete the work
and bring their souls into the arms of God!

on my Girl Scout Gold Award Project.
For my project, I am creating a dance
program at St. Aidan's for children with
special needs. For the first program, I am
opening up classes to girls age 7-12 with
special needs.
At a private dancing school, I have been
assisting in a special needs dance class
for a few months to help prepare. Also,
the instructors at the St. Aidan's Dance
Academy have volunteered to assist me
with my program. If you know of or
have a child with special needs, please
sign up for this wonderful program.
The program will be held in the Convent
Music Room and is scheduled for the
week of July 21st - July 25th, Monday
and Tuesday 3:45-4:45 PM, Wednesday
3:15-4:15 PM, Thursday and Friday
10:00 -11:00 AM.
A parent or guardian must stay during
the class. Parents and guests may join us
for the open class on Friday at 10:00 AM
to see what your child has learned.
The class is free! You may come to any
or all of the classes.
