Romania is about the size of Texas.

• Since 1991, Romania has been a democratic republic.

• Their constitution is based on the nation of France.

Government

The blue represents liberty.

Yellow represents justice.

And red represents fraternity, or brotherhood.

• Romania is a secular country, meaning there is no official religion.

• The vast majority of Romanians are Eastern Orthodox Christians. (About 87%)

• Only about 5% of Romanians are Roman Catholics.

Religion

• Romania is similar to parts of the U.S., since it has hot summers and very cold winters with lots of snow.

• Romania’s average temperature is 56 degrees Fahrenheit along the coast and in the south, and 36 degrees in the mountains where it can get very cold.

Climate

• The Romanian literacy rate is currently 97.3%, so most people can read and write.

• Most Romanians start school at age 3, similar to our schools. Those lucky few who can pass the extremely hard National Test move on to high school. Most people never make it to high school because of this.

Education

• Football, or soccer, is the most popular sport in Romania, and tennis a close second.

• Gheorghe Hagi is the best known Romanian football player.

SPORTS

• Romania’s current population is about 21,513,622 people, while America’s is around 307,006,550.

Population

• An accepted greeting in Romania is a handshake with direct eye contact, and the greeting for the time of day. (Good morning, good afternoon, etc.)

• People are addressed by their title, “Domnul” for Mr. and “Doamna” for Mrs.• Only someone’s close friends and family can refer to them without their title.• If you are invited to a Romanian’s home, bring chocolates, flowers, or liquor to

the host/hostess.• You must bring an odd number of flowers, not an even number. Even numbers

are used for funerals.• If you visit someone’s house, check to see if there are shoes at the door. If

there are, take yours off.• If during dinner at a guests’ you are not finished, you must cross your knife

and fork to show this.

Customs

• Romas (Gypsies) are suspected by France to be terrorists. "We are not terrorists," says Letitia Mark, head of a Roma women's non-governmental organisation.

• France is sending suspected Romas back to Romania.

• This has taken place throughout September 2010.• Other European nations feel that this is

discrimination against Romanian citizens.

Current Event

• Ingredients:• 2 ½ cups of ground walnuts,

or any type of nut• 1 cup of whole milk• ¾ cups sugar• ¼ cup rum or vanilla• 1 tsp orange extract• 2 tsp orange peel• ½ cup ground espresso

(optional)• ¼ cup cocoa (also optional)

• Cozonac is usually eaten on special occasions, such as Easter or Christmas.

• Romania’s food has been influenced over the years from a few of its neighbors, such as Hungary and Germany.

• Romanian foods often feature meat. Some popular main courses are cabbage rolls, sausages, and stews.

• 1 leu = 0.3190 U.S. dollars.• 1 U.S. dollar = about 3.1 leu.

• In Romania, some people believe that children who are born on holy days grow up to be werewolves.

• 750,000 horse carts are registered in Romania.• Some Barack loving Roma name their children

after him.• The Black Sea that borders Romania is actually

blue and green.

Fun Facts!

Black Monster• This game is played after the sunset, when it is dark.• This game can be played with 5 or more children. 1 is a mother, 1 is the Black Monster,

and the rest are the children.• The Black Monster and mother pick an hour for the monster to attack. (ex: Hour 5)• The mother calls: ‘Children, children! Come to dinner!’• And they answer: ‘We are afraid of the Black Monster!’Then the monster appears in the distance. The children ask him questions and he answers

like any other monster. (Mean and evil.)Next the children sing: ‘Hour 1 came, Black Monster isn’t here. Hour 2 came, Black Monster

isn’t here…’When they get to whatever number the monster chose, he/she attacks and chases the

children. If he/she tags one, they become the Black Monster, and the game starts again.

This is like a Romanian version of tag, with a twist.
