romans The book of Romans began as a missionary support letter from the apostle Paul to a group of believers in Rome. Upon completion by the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, it became the fullest, clearest, and grandest statement of the Gospel found anywhere. As a church family, together we will read, study, discuss, and explore this great treasure called Romans. Ultimately, the letter deals with God’s plan of redemption from eternity past through eternity future. How can mankind, Jew and Gentile alike, ever be reconciled to a holy, righteous God? How can a holy God ever forgive sin? Paul writes as a missionary who longs to make Jesus known. He is not ashamed of the message of the Gospel because it is the power of God unto salvation, but the message must be proclaimed. How are we to make Jesus known? Who needs to hear? What about those who have never heard about Jesus? We will wrestle with these and many other issues over the sixteen chapters of Romans. Our Romans series will last most of 2019 with a break during the summer. The series will be divided into four mini-series: The Righteousness of God (Romans 1-4) The Grace Of God (Romans 5-8) The Wisdom Of God (Romans 9-11) Living Sacrifices Unto God (Romans 12-16) Each Monday we will read the passage from Romans that will be taught in the following Sunday’s message. We will read the Sunday message text the same day it’s preached. The other five days of the week will be spent reading Old Testament passages from which the apostle Paul is quoting, cross-referenced passages where he says similar things to other churches or people, and accounts of the life of Jesus in the gospels. The Romans reading plan begins on the next page. Visit tcbchurch.org/notes for Sunday message notes.

The book of Romans began as a missionary support letter from the apostle Paul to a group of believers in Rome.

The series will be divided into four mini-series:

The Righteousness of God (Romans 1-4) The Grace Of God (Romans 5-8) The Wisdom Of God (Romans 9-11) Living Sacrifices Unto God (Romans 12-16)

Each Monday we will read the passage from Romans that will be taught in the following Sunday’s message. We will read the Sunday message text the same day it’s preached. The other five days of the week will be spent reading Old Testament passages from which the apostle Paul is quoting, cross-referenced passages where he says similar things to other churches or people, and accounts of the life of Jesus in the gospels.

MEMORIZEMemorizing Scripture is a way to plant God’s Word deep into our hearts. Each month, a particu-lar passage from Romans has been selected to be memorized individually, in your families, or with your Life Group.

January – Romans 1:16-17 February – Romans 3:21-26 March – Romans 5:1-8 April – Romans 6:8-14 May – Romans 8:28-39 August – Roman Road: Romans 3:10, 3:23, 5:8, 6:23, 10:9-13 September – Romans 11:33-12:2 October – Romans 15:1-6

ENGAGEOne helpful method to engage with the Scriptures is by using the S.O.A.P method.

(S) Scripture - Begin by prayerfully, carefully, and slowly reading the passage.

(O) Observe - Read the passage again. Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal the truth given in the text. We are not concerned with what this text “means to us” but rather we seek to understand what the Holy Spirit is saying through the text. What is the context? What is the genre of this book? What do these words and phrases mean? What are repeated words or phrases?

What are the key themes? How does this fit into the bigger story of the Bible? What does this text teach us about God? Humanity? Jesus? Redemption?

(A) Application - The aim of our pursuit is not just “knowing” but also “being” and “doing.” What do I need to do to obey God’s Word today?

What truths do I need to believe? Is there sin to repent? Promises to claim? Warnings to heed? Commands to obey? Principles I need to apply?

(P) Pray - Prayer is continuing the conversation God has started in His Word. Take the truths you have discovered and pray them back to God.
