Introducing Spanish Phoneme Puzzles Spanish Phoneme Puzzles introduces early learners to blending and segmenting phonemes in words. A phoneme is a sound segment in a word; for example, “ojo” has three phonemes: /o/j/o/. Phonological awareness instruction shows students how the sounds they hear in spoken language are represented in print. Teaching sounds along with letters helps students see how phonemic awareness relates to reading and writing. Phonemic awareness instruction is most effective when students are taught to use letters to represent phonemes. As students develop phonemic awareness, they will use their knowledge of letter sounds to decode and spell words. Spanish Phoneme Puzzles includes 30 puzzles—10 each of words with three, four, and five phonemes. The number of pieces for each puzzle matches the number of phonemes; for example, the puzzle for “ojo” has three pieces, one for each sound—/o/j/o/. Each puzzle is two-sided—the front shows a pictured word and the back shows the letters. To practice isolating and hearing individual sounds in words, students start on the picture side. They slide together the pieces to complete a picture, pronouncing each sound as they proceed, and then flip over the pieces to reveal the letters and read the word. To practice building words, students start on the other side. They pronounce each letter and put them in the order needed to make a word. They check their work by flipping over the pieces to see if the picture is complete. A correctly built word equals a complete picture. Model the ActivityIntroduce your students to Spanish Phoneme Puzzles by selecting the puzzle pieces of various words. Start with the three-phoneme puzzles. Name the picture, tapping each piece as you say its sound. Then slide the pieces together as you repeat the name of the picture.

Turn over the pieces by flipping them bottom to top to reveal the letters on the other side. Read the word with your group, tapping each piece as you pronounce each sound.

Select another three-phoneme puzzle and have students practice putting it together, blending its sounds, and reading the word on the back. Once students are comfortable with the three-phoneme puzzles, move on to the longer puzzles, making sure to tap each piece as you pronounce its sound.

After modeling how to use the puzzles, make them an independent literacy center activity. Select puzzles that match the level of the students using the center. The two-sided puzzles allow for self-checking and require little adult supervision. See the next column for a complete list of Spanish Phoneme Puzzles. As an extension, have students complete the Spanish Phoneme Puzzle Reproducible (Rompecabezas de fonemas Reproducible).

How to Use the Spanish Phoneme Puzzle Reproducible (Rompecabezas de fonemas Reproducible)To provide extra practice blending and segmenting sounds, have students complete the Spanish Phoneme Puzzle Reproducible. After putting together the Phoneme Puzzles at the literacy center, students look at each picture, divide it into its correct number of sounds, and write the letters that represent those sounds on the lines below. (See below for sample taken from the reproducible activity.) They can check their work by looking back at the puzzle pieces from the activity.
