2011-2012 Annual Fund 22011-2012 Annual Fund CONTINUING TRADITION
Dear Friends,
In the Gospel of Luke we find the story of ten lepers who cried out to Jesus, “Master have pity on us!” They were then ordered by Jesus to go show themselves to the high priest. On their way to the priest they were healed of their leprosy. One of the lepers, a Samaritan, returns to Jesus to give thanks and praise to God. And it is here that Jesus asks the question, “Were not all ten made whole?” Of course, Jesus knew the answer to this question. But he asked anyway. Possibly he did so to make the point that gratitude is a virtue that God expects us to develop. I hope you will accept this report as our attempt to be a bit more like that grateful leper in saying thanks.
Some of the many things we are thankful for over the last year include:
■ Over $19,500,000 in merit-based scholarships earned by the graduates of the Class of 2012 – the highest total ever in the school’s history!
■ A stunningly successful Annual Fund drive that combined with other fundraising efforts at Roncalli to raise over $1,000,000 in gifts that allowed for a long overdue renovation of our football locker room, construction of a new wrestling room, matching funds for endowment, and financial assistance for qualified families that need help.
■ An all-time high of 50% of our graduating seniors earning a score of three or higher on at least one AP exam - near the top of all high schools in the state in this category.
Your support of our mission is a great encouragement to us that our work is vital in today’s world and that we are not in this alone. Whether your support has come through gifts of time, talent, treasure, notes of encouragement, or prayers for our students please know how grateful we are for the generosity of spirit that has been such a great blessing to our students and teachers.
And so again I say thanks for your relentless efforts to make Roncalli a special place for young people. They deserve it. It is what God has called us to do. It is my privilege to work with you towards that end.
Sincerely,
Joseph D. Hollowell President

Chairpersons
It has been our privilege to be the Chairpersons for the 2011-2012 Roncalli High School Annual Fund. We would like to extend our sincere appreciation and gratitude to all the parents, the Southside parishes, benefactors, and the business community for supporting this year’s campaign.
We are blessed with school leaders who believe in maintaining a longstanding tradition of excellence and act as responsible stewards to the Mission of Roncalli. You can feel assured that every dollar you donated was used to its maximum potential to support the growth of the school and the needs of our students and families.
Thanks to your generous support, we exceeded our goal of $420,000 and the benefits are immediate and significant:
Facility Improvements: The interior modernization of the Blockhouse was long overdue in so much as the previous state of the facility represented a potential health hazard to our kids. The renovation has been masterfully executed to upgrade the utility of the facility, provide a clean and modern learning environment, while maintaining the history and tradition of the original blockhouse exterior. The addition to the bubble provides the wrestling team a well-earned, and much needed, facility. Last, and very important, all Rebel athletes will benefit from improvements in the training facilities that provide first aid, treatment and rehabilitative care to help keep our most prized possessions, our kids, strong and healthy.
Tuition Assistance: The Roncalli Mission remains true to the ideal that all Catholic families should have an opportunity to provide their children with a Catholic education. Your continued support is responsible for allowing all to be a part of the Roncalli family.
Future Foundations Endowment Match: Building a strong Endowment is vitally important for Roncalli to assure that the promise of excellence continues and grows in the future.
Teacher Training: Any dollar directed for the advancement of our teachers is a dollar well spent.
On behalf of all the students, administration, faculty, staff, and parents, we thank you for your generous support. We hope you agree that this year’s campaign was well executed and handled with the highest standard of care.
God bless,
Jim and Sophia Otley2011-2012 Annual Fund Chairpersons

Roncalli High School is so fortunate to be the beneficiary of such a generous and giving community. Last year’s annual fund drive raised over $420,000 to enable Roncalli to continue to effectively carry out its mission.
The monies raised from this important initiative are used to provide funding for tuition assistance. With the continued increase in enrollment, the need for financial assistance is greater than ever. Funds raised will not only assist families this year, but will be used to fund an endowment to assist future generations as well.
Proceeds from the annual fund also enable Roncalli to make improvements to the school’s facilities. This year is no exception as we place our emphasis on making much needed upgrades to the school’s information technology.
Like many of you, I have witnessed dramatic improvements to the school over the years and continue to be amazed by the generosity of the Roncalli Community and its willingness to give so freely of its time, talent and treasure.
On behalf of Roncalli High School, thank you for your support and please keep Roncalli and its entire family in your prayers, as we strive to be good stewards of the gifts you have so generously given.
May God bless you,
Patrick Schubach

Roncalli High School continues to experience excellence on so many different fronts. Our students’ academic performance and academic accomplishments continue to be at or near the top in the state in a wide variety of areas. The scope of excellence found in our students’ efforts in the extracurricular activities continues to be both far reaching and extensive with excellence abounding in the fine arts, athletics and club activities. Most importantly, with the help of our parents and parishes in the South Deanery, we are helping our young people build a stronger, more vibrant faith that will benefit them in all aspects of their life. God continues to shine down brightly on Roncalli!

Senior Jimmy Henke became Roncalli’s 14th Indiana Academic All Star and was honored at a luncheon sponsored by the Indiana Department of Education and The Indianapolis Star. Each of the 400+ high schools in the state of Indiana are allowed to nominate one senior based on a complex academic formula given to us by the sponsoring agencies along with their leadership and service. The initial pool of nominations are trimmed to 90 students in a first round of selection. From those 90 there are then 40 of the state’s top seniors selected and honored as Indiana Academic All Stars.

Gifts of CashRoncalli receives a large portion of gifts in the form of cash simply because it's the easiest way to give. Cash gifts are fully deductible within the tax year of which they are given unless the total amount of the gift exceeds 50% of your adjusted income. However, the excess can be carried forward for up to five years and used as a deduction within those years.
Gifts of PropertyAlmost any type of property has the potential to be a suitable charitable gift. This includes securities, art objects, real estate and other types of personal property. If you own property on which the value has appreciated so that it generates long-term capital gain if sold, you are generally better off donating the property to the school rather than selling it and donating the proceeds. Consult your attorney or tax advisor to find out what is best for your situation.
Life Income PlansA donor may wish to make a significant gift to Roncalli during his/her lifetime, but may find it necessary to utilize income from those same assets. With this situation, a life income gift to Roncalli may be the answer. The basis of this type of gift is that you make irrevocable contribution of cash or other assets to
the school or the Catholic Community Foundation. The school or foundation will act as a trustee for these assets which would allow the school or foundation to invest the assets and pay you an income for the remainder of your life and the life of your spouse or other beneficiary. At the end of these "life interests" the remaining principle will be passed on to the school.
BequestsThe most common type of planned gift is a bequest, which is a provision in your will for a gift to the school. A charitable bequest is fully deductible from your estate and can significantly reduce estate taxes on the balance of your estate. Your bequest to Roncalli can take the form of a specific bequest, cash or securities, real estate or other property. It can also take the form of a percentage of your total estate.
A donor can make a gift to Roncalli by using a residuary bequest, which is the gift of all or a portion of your estate remaining after the payment of specific bequests, debts, taxes and administrative expenses. You can also make a contingent bequest, which takes effect only if your primary beneficiaries predecease you or are otherwise disqualified as legatees. This type of bequest may work well for younger donors because it does not adversely affect the primary interest of the
donor's spouse, children or other primary beneficiaries.
A bequest can be restricted or unrestricted. Due to the changing future needs of the school, donors often make their bequests unrestricted in order to allow the use of funds where they are most needed.
Giving to an EndowmentGifts to an endowment are a permanent investment in Roncalli's future. The original value of the gift is multiplied as it generates continuous investment income for the needs of Roncalli.

Tributes and MemorialsThe memory of a loved one can be recorded as a tribute or memorial gift to Roncalli High School. The memorial is recognized in the Annual Report and notification of memorial contributions are made as you request.
For more information on planned giving or gifts to Roncalli, please contact the Advancement Office at 787-8277, ext. 240.

Roncalli High School 2011-2012 Annual Repor t
2011-2012 Annual Fund 262011-2012 Annual Fund CONTINUING TRADITION
Roncalli High School is meeting the expectations of the Indianapolis Catholic community, where traditions and values are important. The high school environment and the values taught are vital to a student’s future success as an employee, a spouse, a citizen, and a leader in the community. At Roncalli, these values are at the core of what is taught and practiced.
This success, however does not come without a cost. Although Roncalli is an Archdiocesan high school with an open enrollment policy, the school receives no state or federal tax money to offset the cost of tuition. The cost of educating our students is not covered by tuition alone. To ensure that this success story known as Roncalli continues, we need to meet the ever-increasing demands for excellence in staffing, programs, and facilities. This can only be done by endowing our future financial stability.
The Pope John XXIII Legacy Society is a group of charitably inclined individuals who have made a gift to help ensure the financial security of Roncalli High School. Membership to the society is gained by making a gift in one of the following ways:
■ By contributing $5,000 or more over a lifetime to a Roncalli High School Endowment Fund.
■ By naming Roncalli High School as charitable beneficiary of a charitable gift annuity, a charitable remainder trust, or a charitable lead trust.
■ By naming Roncalli High School as a beneficiary of a life insurance policy.
■ By naming Roncalli High School in a will as a recipient of a portion of an estate.
■ By naming Roncalli High School as a remainder beneficiary of a life estate or real estate trust.
■ By designating an IRA or other tax deferred retirement account to Roncalli High School.
