Flat Roofs
Over the past few years, there have beenmajor advances and improvements in thematerials used in modern roofingtechnology. The specifier now hasrenewed confidence to take full advantageof the benefits of a flat roof and lowpitched roof design concept.
Flat roofs allow greater planning anddesign flexibility - roof-top gardens, terracing, patios, car parks, buildingservices and ventilation equipment, delivery areas and provision for addingadditional storeys at a later date. All canbe accommodated in a flat roof design.
Extensive or irregular shaped buildingscan be roofed more quickly, easily andcost effectively than a pitched roof.
Internal condensation is less of a riskbecause a flat roof uses less airspacethan a pitched roof. In addition, the needto heat and illuminate voids is eliminated.
Flat roofs allow easy access to naturallight and because of the simpleconstruction, internal partitioning is easy. This is especially advantageous forcommercial or industrial buildings.
The Need for Rainwater Outlets
Any flat area needs careful design toensure efficient removal of surface water.Traditionally, water from a flat roof orother structure is channelled by way of aslope to a rainwater pipe. Leaks can oftenoccur at the junction of the membraneand the rainwater pipe.
To overcome this potential problem, ACO Building Drainage rainwater outletsprovide a watertight joint between themembrane and the outlet bymechanically clamping the membrane tothe sump unit. Tried and tested for over40 years, ACO Building Drainage outletshave been used successfully on all typesof flat roof construction.
HP (High Performance) range of outlets providesrainwater drainage solutions for a wide range ofapplications.

Introduction
Overview
The following notes are intended as aguide to the specifier who is designing arainwater drainage system for a roof. It isrecommended that reference is made toBritish Standard BS EN 12056 : 2000Gravity Drainage Systems Inside Buildings- Part 3 : Roof drainage, layout andcalculation for a comprehensive designguide.
For any rainwater drainage system towork effectively and reliably, due accountmust be taken of the followingconsiderations:
 Geographical location
 Rainfall intensity
 Effective catchment area of roof
 Risk category of building
Hydraulic capacity of the drainagesystem(s) employed
Geographical Location
Rainfall intensity has a direct impact onthe performance requirements of anyrainwater drainage system. For roofs andpaved areas, it is normally impracticableto guard against very infrequent, extremely heavy rainfall situations and sothe designer should aim to strike abalance between the cost of the drainagesystem, the risk category of the buildingand the frequency and subsequentconsequences of flooding.
The drainage system for roofs and pavedareas should be capable of coping withthe intense rainfall that accompaniessummer thunderstorms.
The UK experiences complex and variedrainfall patterns. For example, surprisingly, although the upland areas ofnorthern and western parts of the BritishIsles experience higher average annualrainfall than the lowland areas, thelowland areas experience more frequentand more intense short duration rainfallthan the upland areas. British StandardBS EN 12056 : 2000 may be referred tofor further information and guidance onthis topic.
A rainfall intensity of 75 mm/hr (0.02 l/s/m2) is used throughout this designcatalogue.
Flow Rate Calculation
The flow rate Q, from roofs, paved areasand vertical walls and surfaces iscalculated as follows and assumes thatall surfaces are impermeable:
Q = A x I litres/second3600
where
Q = Volumetric flow rate (l/s)
A = Effective catchment area (m²)
I = Rainfall intensity (75 mm/hr)

HYDRAULIC DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS
Pitched Roofs
The effective catchment area of a freelyexposed pitched roof draining to an eavesor parapet wall gutter is equal to the planarea of the roof plus half its maximumelevation area.
Figure 1. Pitched Roof
Catchment Area A = (f x l) + (g/2 x l) (m²)= l(f + g/2) (m²)
All linear dimensions in metres.
Flat Roofs & Paved Areas
For a monopitch flat roof or paved areawith a freely exposed horizontal surface, the effective catchment area is equal tothe plan area of the area to be drained asshown below:
Figure 2. Monopitch Flat Roof
Catchment Area B = a x b (m²)
All linear dimensions in metres.
Figure 3. Dual Pitch Flat Roof
For a flat roof with a dual pitch, split the roof up into discrete areas to isolate the catchment areas as follows:
Catchment Area C = c x d (m²)Catchment Area D = c x e (m²)
All linear dimensions in metres.

Adjacent Vertical Surfaces
Flat roofs or paved areas that are adjacentto vertical walls and/or glazed surfaces willbe subjected to an increased hydraulicload due to the effects of wind driven rainagainst these vertical surfaces andsubsequently running off onto the roof.
For a flat roof exposed to a single wall asshown in Figure 4, assume the effectivecatchment area to be half the exposedvertical area of the wall and is shown asfollows:
Figure 4. Monopitch Flat Roof with One AdjacentVertical Wall
From Figure 2, Catchment Area B = a x b (m²)Vertical Wall Catchment Area E = a x H/2 (m²)Total Catchment Area = (a x b) + (a x H/2) (m²)
All linear dimensions in metres.
Similarly, for a flat roof exposed to two ormore vertical walls forming an angle orbay, the assumed resulting wind directionrequires that the combined areas of thewalls should be considered together asfollows:
Figure 5 Monopitch Flat Roof with Two AdjacentVertical Walls
Roof Catchment Area B = a x b (m²)Vertical Wall Catchment Area E = a x H/2 (m²)Vertical Wall Catchment Area F = b x h/2 (m²)
Total Catchment Area = (a x b) + ½√(E²+ F² - 2F x Cos θ) (m²)
All linear dimensions in metres; angles in degrees.
Practical Design Tips
When designing an engineered rainwaterscheme, the following design hints aresuggested:
Do not design for the maximumoutlet hydraulic capacity, allow a10% factor of safety margin forintense storms and leaf/debrisblockage.
Always allow for a back-up outlet, even though only one outlet may berequired.
Rainwater outlets should beinspected and cleaned at least every6 months to ensure reliable andcontinuous operation.

Description
The ACO Building Drainage HP range ofrainwater outlets provides acomprehensive selection of highperformance rainwater outlet solutions formost domestic, industrial and commercialapplications involving flat roofs, balconiesand terracing.
High Flow Rate
Advanced design features encourage ahigher flow rate of water through theoutlet compared to conventional systemsby reducing the amount of air that isdrawn into the outlet. If allowed to gounchecked, a vortex will form as thewater enters the outlet - the same effectcan be seen in the bath or a sink whenthe plug is removed.
Product Features
Cost effective drainage solution - highflow rates minimises number ofoutlets required.
Secure grating to prevent vandalismand theft.
 Comprehensive product range formost applications.
 Durable, corrosion resistantconstruction.
 Gun-metal optionally available.
At the centre of the vortex, a void isnaturally formed as the water spiralsthrough the outlet. Under theseconditions, both water and air are drawninto the outlet significantly reducingefficiency. For maximum flow rateefficiency, only water should enter theoutlet. This may result in the use of feweroutlets for a given installation.
The ACO Building Drainage HP range ofoutlets provide anti-vortex design featuresto minimise this effect and a twofolddesign approach is adopted to achievethis. On all circular domed gratings aninverted cup arrangement is integratedwithin the grating to breakdown the vortexeffect within the grating and in addition, the leaf guard geometry of the gratings isoptimised to encourage water to flowradially into the outlet, thereby minimisingthe vortex effect outside of the grating.
Reduced Installation Costs
Compared to conventional outlets, highperformance outlets mean either feweroutlets/pipe/groundworks with reducedinstallation costs, or greater security inextreme rainfall conditions.
Secure Gratings
All gratings for the HP range of productsare secured with stainless steel fixingsthat require either a socket wrench orspanner for removal and replacement. This provides additional security toprevent theft or vandalism.
Membrane Clamp
The roof membrane is positively securedinto the outlet body by a clamp and issecured by 2 stainless steel fixings. Themembrane clamp is serrated on theunderside for improved membrane clampgrip performance. The outlet designensures the integrity of the seal betweenthe clamp and body is not disturbedwhen the grating is removed formaintenance during the life of theinstallation.
Materials
All products are manufactured from LM6grade aluminium alloy to BS 1490 asstandard for optimum corrosionresistance.

Overview
This section includes a brief insight intothe materials that the rainwater drainageproducts featured in this ProductCatalogue and Design Guide aremanufactured from.
In certain applications, it is vital tounderstand the long term operationaleffects that will occur if products are notspecified accurately or installed correctly.
Aluminium Alloys
Aluminium alloys are very common andcan be found in a wide range ofapplications ranging from cooking utensilsto spacecraft. The material iscommercially available in excess of 99%purity and is used primarily for its highresistance to corrosion, lightness andstrength.
Comparing similar products, aluminiumalloys weigh around one-third as much asequivalent mild steel and stainless steelproducts and compared to mild steel, they have a much better corrosionresistance to atmospheric conditions.
Because aluminium alloys are strong, lightweight, have good corrosionresistance, are cost effective and haveexcellent casting properties, this materialis an obvious first choice for rainwateroutlets and floor gullies. Additionally, being non-magnetic, aluminium will notattract ferrous particles that couldotherwise cause silt traps and long termmaintenance issues.
ACO Building Drainage aluminiumrainwater outlets, shower drains and floordrains use LM6 grade aluminium alloy toBS 1490. LM6 exhibits excellentresistance to corrosion in bothatmospheric and marine environmentscompared to other aluminium alloys, andis resistant to sulphate attack for curingconcrete.
When exposed to the atmosphere, a thininvisible aluminium oxide film forms onthe surface of the material that protectsthe material from further oxidation.
Gun-metal
Gun metal possesses good tensilestrength and corrosion resistant propertiesand is used in many bearing and marineapplications. ACO Building Drainagerainwater outlets are available in gun-metal when bi-metallic corrosionresistance arising from lead or coppermaterials is a potential risk.
Gun-metal is an alloy of copper, tin andzinc. Admiralty gun-metal typically has acomposition of 88% copper, 10% tin and2% zinc.
Galvanised Mild Steel
Mild steel is a convenient, ductile, easilyworked and cost effective material thatfinds many uses in everyday applicationsaround us.
In its raw state, mild steel offers noresistance to corrosion and quickly formsa familiar rust (ferric oxide) on its surfaceunless precautions are taken to preventoxidation taking place.
Galvanising is a process that is commonlyused to prevent corrosion and essentiallyconsists of a layer of zinc applied to thesurface of the steel. ACO BuildingDrainage use a ‘hot dip’ process ofdipping the component into a vat ofmolten zinc.
Galvanic Corrosion
Galvanic corrosion occurs when twodissimilar metals are in electrical contactand connected by an electrolyte. Anelectrolyte conducts electricity and can bewater solutions containing salts or acids -and need not be concentrated for theeffect to take place.
The effects of galvanic corrosion begin toplay an important part when analuminium rainwater outlet is used inconjunction with metallic membranes, such as lead or copper.
The Electromotive Series provides aninsight to the corrosion effects betweendissimilar materials.
The Electromotive Series
The susceptibility of different metals tocorrosion whilst in contact with eachother depends upon the differencebetween the contact potentials. Thegreater the potential difference, thegreater the tendency for corrosion. Themetal with the higher negative potentialforms the anode and is corrodedpreferentially.
Some examples from the ElectromotiveSeries are shown opposite for illustration.
Material Selection Tips
For applications when dissimilarmaterials are in contact with eachother wherever possible, selectmaterials to be as close as possibleto each other in the ElectromotiveSeries. For example, if a roof iscopper clad, select a gun-metal outletas gun-metal is around 88% copper, this closely matches the claddingmaterial.
Where dissimilar metals cannot bereadily avoided, care must be takento electrically insulate the adjacentmaterials. For example where lead isdressed into an aluminium alloyoutlet, carefully paint the aluminiumbody and clamp components withgood quality bitumen paint or use aninsulating gasket material such asneoprene sponge. Ideally, a gun-metaloutlet should be used in conjunctionwith lead clad roofs.
The effects of galvanic corrosion canbe accelerated in salineenvironments. Caution should beobserved with rainwater outletapplications close to coastal regions.

General Installation Notes
All outlets must be securely attached tothe roof structure using a suitable timberframe or deck support. The waterproofmembrane must be fully dressed into theoutlet body and securely clamped underthe membrane clamp.
Practical Design/Installation Tips
Do not design for the maximumoutlet hydraulic capacity, allow a10% factor of safety margin forintense storms and leaf/debrisblockage.
Always allow for a back-up outlet, even though only one outlet may berequired.
Rainwater outlets should beinspected and cleaned at least every6 months to ensure reliable andcontinuous operation.
Threaded Outlets
For all ACO Building Drainage threadedoutlets (HP Vertical Screw and Two-Wayoutlets) are provided with female parallelthreads conforming to BS 21:1985 fordirect connection of threaded tubeconforming to BS 1387:1985. This tubeis supplied with a taper male threadconforming to BS 21:1985, whichensures a watertight joint when fullyscrewed into the unit.
Threaded outlets are particularlyrecommended where a connection to theoutlet is made within the thickness of theconcrete slab. In these applications, thethreaded connection creates a completelywatertight seal.
Where an ABS screw thread connector(STC) is used in conjunction withthreaded outlets, the screw threadconnector should be assembled withPTFE tape to ensure a watertight seal.
.
Balcony Outlets
The flat grating is configured with anarray of eccentric grating slots that canbe readily cut on site with a hacksaw toaccommodate a downpipe.
HP Circular Raising Rings
HP raising rings can be used for domedgrating outlets and terrace gratings only.HP raising rings cannot be used with flatgratings.
HP raising rings are secured withstainless steel fixings that are suppliedwith each raising ring product.
Where required, the HP raising rings maybe easily cut on site to a specific heightusing a hacksaw (for example, whenusing a terrace grate in conjunction withpaving slabs).
Balcony/Gully Outlet Raising Rings
Raising rings for balcony outlets and gullyoutlets are available and perform asimilar function as the HP Circular raisingrings as previously described. Separatestainless steel fixings are supplied witheach unit.
Deck Supports
ACO deck supports are recommended formetal decked roof construction and aresuitable for installation on all types ofmetal decked roofs. Deck supports havepre-drilled holes for ease of fixing.
