20 technical comparison…roofing tiles

PARAMETER` ONDUVILLA TILES SHINGLES

Aesthetics Available in 4 colours. Gives a nice, rustic look. Provides a 3-

D effect even from a distance because of profile. Appears flat from a distance.

Eco-Friendliness Onduvilla is made of cellulose-bitumen which is

environment-friendly. Made from a synthetic substance.

Weight Aprox. 4 kg per square mt.

Leads to saving in cost on transportation.

Aprox. 12 kg per square mt.

Leads to increase in cost on transportation.

Ease of Installation

Can be installed on wooden or metallic battens.

Approx. 17 fixings per sq.mt. required since it has to be fixed

only on each corrugation and overlap.

Overlaps parallel to eaves are provided by 4 cm high

corrugations. Onduvilla’s overlaps parallel to corrugations

are 8 cm, marked with 2 guide lines, which also have a

function of double thresholds.

Requires a full deck of wood, plywood or any other non-

metallic board. Metallic under-layer cannot be used.

Approx. 36 fixings per sq.mtr.

Shingles have no overlaps to eaves. Due to openings

between tabs, big overlaps are needed in the other

direction. The effective part of them, however, is only 5 cm.

Therefore, additional overlay of waterproofing felt is required.

Thermal Insulation

Bad conductor of heat.

Internal temperature covered by roof would be 20% less

than the external temperature.

Bad conductor of heat, but no major thermal insulation

offered on account of installation procedure.

Acoustic Insulation Provides sound insulation since non-metallic. Effective

against rainfall noise.

Bad conductor of sound, but no major acoustic insulation

offered on account of installation procedure.

Resistance To Corrosion

Nail holes are 4 cm higher than the roof level and are never

in touch with flow of rainwater. Hence, no corrosion and no

seepage from site of nails.

Nail holes are covered by the following shingle but they are

at the same level as the flow of rainwater. Hence,

probability of corrosion and water seepage.

Resistance To Bacteria And Fungus No formation of moss on exposed surface. No formation of moss on exposed surface.

Tensile Strength And Durability Is not breakable. Is not breakable.

Cost Benefit Since battens of wood can be used, only 38% of total

surface area would comprise of wood. Reduced cost.

Requires full deck of wood, i.e., 100% of total surface area

to be covered by wood. Costs increases. Additional cost of

waterproofing felt required. Hence. Installed cost comprises

of cost of shingles + cost of 100% decking + cost of

waterproofing membrane, taking the overall cost very high.

24 quantity calculation

The following procedure should generally be followed when calculating the quantity required for the product:

SHEETS / TILES

Measure the total area (in square feet) of the surface to be covered.

Add wastage as follows:

20.00% for wastage and overlaps in case of a one sided slope.

27.50% for wastage and overlaps in case of a two sided slope.

35.00% for wastage and overlaps in case of a four sided slope.

Make a note of the total area (including wastage and overlaps).

Select the product you would like to use.

Divide the total installation area in square feet by the area in square feet per unit of sale for the sheets (20.44 sq. ft.) or tiles (4.56 sq. ft.).

Round of to the nearest whole number on the higher side.

RIDGES

Measure the total length (in running feet) of the portion to be covered by ridges.

Add for 20% for overlaps.

Make a note of the total length (including overlaps).

Divide the total installation length in feet by the length feet per unit of sale for the ridges (3.00 r. ft.).

Round of to the nearest whole number on the higher side.

SCREWS & CAPS

Calculate 12 sets per sheet or 7 sets per tile.

One of the components is cellulose fiber. Cellulose fiber can be extracted from various sources, including wood pulp or recycled paper. Besides

cellulose fiber, Onduline also consists of bitumen, resin, mineral additives. Cellulose fiber itself is a very strong material (also used in cement and

concrete to improve resistance). Bitumen makes fiber water-resistant, pigments provide the coloration, resin and other additives improve

weather-resistance.

Does Onduline contain any toxic product? Is it safe for the people and the environment?

Onduline roofs are made of bitumen + resin + mineral pigments + cellulose fibers. None of these products is toxic for the people or the

environment. Test carried out at Yarsley Technical Centre (UK) show no toxicity of Onduline sheets or ingredients.

What is the manufacturing process for Onduline?

The cellulose fibres, bitumen and additives and bitumen are compressed under intense heat and pressure to form various Onduilne products.

PRODUCT RANGE

What is the product range available?

Unlike conventional roofing product manufacturers who make only roofing sheets, the “Onduline” product range covers a complete roofing

solution that includes, sheets, tiles, ridges, skylights, ventilators, corrugation fillers, specialized fasteners. Hence, your roof is given an aesthetic

and homogeneous finish, and shall not be made to look like a patchwork job.

APPLICATION

Where can I use an Onduline roof?

Virtually everywhere! Onduline roofs cover homes, agricultural and industrial building all around the world with colours matching the environment.

CHARACTERISTICS

What is the durability of an Onduline roof?

Durability depends on external conditions like weather and climate. Onduline roofs are guaranteed waterproof for a 10-year period. However,

some Onduline roofs have been installed for more than 50 years in Europe, and 30 years in tropical countries.

Is Onduline resistant to corrosion and to chemical products?

Because it is made of cellulose-bitumen saturated fibre, Onduline resists corrosion and most chemical products. (Laboratory tests carried out at

CSTB – France).

Is Onduline flammable?

Like all other bitumen-based materials, Onduline is flammable. In European Standards, its classification is E, which is “normal to ignite”. It is

allowed for use on different types of buildings. However, the cases when a source of fire is located on the roof are very rare. If a house is on fire, it

means that almost every type of roof cladding burns and melts.

Steel roofs experience expansion / contraction issues. Is this the same with Onduline?

While steel expands and contracts under the action of heat and cold, Onduline dimensional stability is not affected. Test carried out at the

French National Testing Laboratory certify this.

Does my Onduline roof insulate from heat and from cold?

Measurements show a thermal conductivity of 0.098 W/m.C°. This value is close to cork. By comparison, stainless steel value is 52 W/m.C°, 525

times higher. Onduline insulates from heat and cold within these values.

Does my Onduline roof insulate from noise, especially in case of strong rains?

Tests carried out at the Sound Research Laboratories Ltd (UK) show good sound absorption of Onduline sheets with a value of Rw= 28 dB. The

noise of rain is absorbed much better on Onduline than on steel sheets.

Can Onduline withstand low temperatures?

Laboratory tests in USA and Germany and the long Onduline experience in Siberia (Russia) under the very low temperatures show that Onduline is

absolutely frost-proof with no mechanical damage.

Can Onduline withstand high temperatures?

In a tropical endurance test, Onduline proved suitable in severe humidity and temperatures up to 70°C (Yarsley Test Centre – UK).

What is the maximum wind pressure Onduline can bear?

Tests carried out at the Yarsley Research Centre (UK) and in Miami and Metropolitan Dade County (USA) have proved Onduline suitable in

hurricane and earthquake conditions (up to 192 km/h or 53.3m/s).

How much snow load can Onduline bear?

If the battens and overlapping are made correctly Onduline withstands snow load up to 960 kg/m², which is equivalent to one single layer of 50

cm snow. However, it is recommend that the technical department be contacted for installation in extreme climatic conditions.

Does Onduline’s colour fade?

Onduline sheets are not coloured just on the surface, but are double pigmented, hence creating a homogeneous colour mass. This ensures that

the colour on the sheets remains steadfast for 10-15 years.

Can I walk on an Onduline roof?

Like any other roof, Onduline is not made to be walked on. So you must follow the usual safety procedures when going on an Onduline roof.

What differentiates Onduline Company from its competitors?

Onduline has been the first company to produce cellulose-bitumen sheets on an industrial scale. The company was created in 1944 and has

been constantly improving its products, and increasing sales. To date, it is the #1 producer of cellulose-bitumen sheets worldwide.

INSTALLATION

What is the maximum and minimum roof pitch?

Onduline roofs can be installed from pitches as low as 5° up to 90°.

What should be used to cut Onduline sheets and tiles?

Use a utility knife with a sharp blade for cutting parallel with corrugations, or an electric circular saw with a carbide-tipped blade for cutting across

corrugations. Wear eye protection when cutting.

Can I install Onduline on a metal frame or concrete or wood decking?

Yes. Onduline can be installed on metal frame or on decking. The fixing must then be adapted and the Technical Department has ready

procedures for this.

Is it necessary to use under-roofing with Onduline?

It is not necessary if the purpose is just to improve the water-tightness. Onduline roof system is absolutely water-tight. However, it is necessary to

use a vapour barrier in the roof construction.

Is it mandatory to use Onduline Safe Top nails?

Safe Top nails have been specifically designed for Onduline roofs. The Safe Top bonded washer is resistant to UV radiations and with its

weatherproof seal provides a superior resistance to wind uplift. Safe Top are particularly suitable for use on hardwood purlins, and their colours

match the Onduline sheet colours. Other nails can be used, but with no Onduline guarantee.

Is it necessary to fix each sheet with 20 nails?

Yes, it is necessary. The roofing material installation can then be weather-proof for a very long period of time. Furthermore, it will also withstand

extreme weather conditions, e.g. storms. The 1998 summer hurricane in Moscow tore off Onduline sheets fastened with 4-6 nails. Sheets

fastened with 20 nails have remained undamaged.

MAINTENANCE

What is the maintenance of an Onduline roof?

Maintenance is minimal. You must ensure that no leaves remain on the roof and trap humidity.

My current roof gets mold and/or mildew on it. If I use Onduline, will I still have to deal with mold and/or mildew?

If your roof is in an area where mold and mildew are a common problem, your Onduline roof could also be susceptible to these. Periodic

cleaning with one part chlorine bleach to ten parts water will get rid of most mildew or mold.

Is it necessary to clean snow from Onduline roof?

If the roof construction is made correctly, there will be no problem with snow lying upon it. If one cleans it constantly, roof could be damaged.

Therefore it is better not to do it.

Can I paint an Onduline roof?

Onduline roofs come pre-pigmented from the factory. It is perfectly possible to paint and repaint Onduline sheets, on both sides. Oil-based paint

with solvents should be avoided at all times. Use a high-grade, outdoor acrylic latex paint.

How do you remove stains from the sheets?

Stains will be washed away with rain after a while. Should you want to remove them immediately, just rub another piece of Onduline material

against it.

SUPPORT
