A historic andarchaeological treasure, theRoyal Gunpowder Millsheritage site in WalthamAbbey, Essex, has beengiven a new lease of lifewith a stunning andsympathetic roofrefurbishment. Withprevious roof coveringsacross the site’s buildingsclose to derelict, a newroofing system was neededthat would both guarantee a durable solution and fit with the aesthetic of the heritagebuildings. Welsh Slate was specified forthe roof of an architect’schallenging but award-winning own self-build for atrio of reasons – its quality,durability and aesthetics.More than 600 PenrhynHeather Blue slates wereselected for the front of SteepWedge House in Douglas,County Cork, which as itsname suggests was built on asteep site within threewayleaves which havedetermined its shape. Theslates were complemented by40 slate-and-a-half for the verge details, with this part of the roof also incorporating aconcealed stainless steel gutter with an 80mm opening three slates up from the eaves.Architect Gareth Sullivan said: “The Welsh slate was chosen for its quality, durabilityand appearance.” The roof slates were supplied by Lagan Building Solutions andinstalled by William McCarthy over a morning using hooks and 38mm copper nails on50mm x 35mm battens over a breather membrane. A dry fix ridge systemthat is uniquelyuniversal has beenlaunched byconstruction materialsgroup Breedon. Thegroup has pulled nopunches with its firstbuilding productlaunch since its LaganGroup takeover,introducing a fixingsystem where unique ridge union brackets are fully adjustable so that they are equallysuitable for clay and concrete ridge tiles. Prior to this, dry ridge fixing systems havebeen particular to the type of ridge tiles being used. The boxed kit comes completewith ventilated ridge rolls, union brackets, clamping plates, screws and washers, andridge batten straps for a six-metre length. Safesite, a supplier of fall protectionsolutions, has provided Jonesco(Preston) Ltd with a collective fallprotection system that ensuresmaintenance teams accessing therooftop are separated from hazardsand all potential fall risks. The mainroof on the Preston HQ is acorrugated sheet roof that featuredexposed skylights. Wanting toestablish their working at heightrequirements in order to protect themaintenance team and outsidecontractors when working on theroof, Jonesco (Preston) Ltdcontacted Safesite to conduct a site visit and survey. Ravago Building Solution’s BRE Green Guide Rating A+ extruded polystyrene (XPS)thermal insulation boards were used during a revamp of Boden House, home offashion giant Boden. The new inverted flat roof includes1000m2 of Ravatherm XPS X300 SL in 80mm and 120mm thicknesses. Ravatherm XPS 300 SL was launched in2016 as the next generation of XPS thermal insulation, specially designed for invertedroof applications. It was the first XPS insulation board to attain BRE Green GuideRating A+ for roofing and recent improvements to the product formulation mean theship lapped edged boards have a declared lambda of 0.030 or 0.031. The A. Proctor Group received two awards at the prestigious Construction MarketingAwards (CMAs) in London in November 2019. The CMAs are a highly anticipatedannual event for the industry. Now in their 19th year, the awards showcase the bestconstruction marketing campaigns of the year from teams across the UK, highlightingcreativity, innovation and marketing effectiveness in this sector. The winners wereannounced at a gala event at the Hilton London Bankside Hotel on 28 November. TheA. Proctor Group won two categories: “Best Use of Advertising” and “Best Big BudgetCampaign”. The winning entry, a fashion-inspired campaign, featured five fantasticcostumes that were made completely out of Proctor’s high-performing constructionmembranes. Proctor’s marketing team worked with students from the University ofEdinburgh to design and construct the outfits. CMA judges on the night of the awardscommented that A. Specialist building envelopecontractor Prater has delivered asubstantial scope of works for theCamden Lock Village development,including standing seam roofingand an extensive waterproofingpackage – both for the roofs andthe 229 balconies on theresidential properties. Incollaboration with supply chainpartner BEMO, Prater wasresponsible for the designdevelopment and installation of the standing seam metal roofing on two of thebuildings. The stepped profile of the roofs were designed to match the building on theother side of the canal and help integrate the new development with the surroundingarchitecture. The roof also had to meet the specified thermal efficiency (U-value) andsound transmission levels. The BEMO system selected for this project was designed tominimise thermal bridging and deliver the required levels of soundproofing. Prater alsoinstalled hot-melt and liquid waterproofing systems on seven of the new buildings.
