PLACEMENT DO’S & DON’TS DO PLACE YOUR DETECTORS IN THE FOLLOWING PLACES• On every level of your home• At least five feet from the ground• Close enough to every sleeping area so it can be clearly

heard during the nighttime• Near attached garages; cars produce carbon monoxide

any time they’re running and those gasses can quickly spread to the rest of the house

DO NOT PLACE YOUR DETECTORS IN THE FOLLOWING PLACES• Near any sources of blowing air: fans, vents, windows• In close proximity to fuel-burning

appliances• Direct sunlight

According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), there are more than 350,000 house fires each year in the U.S. Fires can be started in a handful of different ways and while some causes are common, others might surprise you.

GREASE FIRES Cooking fires are the #1 cause of home fires and home injuries. Keep anything that can catch fire away from your stovetop: oven mitts, wooden utensils, food packaging or hand towels. If you have a small grease fire, cover the flames with a metal lid or cookie sheet and turn the stovetop off. Pour baking soda or salt onto it to smother the fire. Do NOT try to extinguish the fire with water or attempt to move the pan outside.

TIPS TO HELP YOU STAY SAFE: » Never leave a car running in a garage,

even if it’s only for a minute or two » Only use propane or charcoal grills

outside » Make sure everyone in the house knows

the difference between the sounds of a smoke and CO alarm

» Keep chimneys clear of residue to ensure proper ventilation

HEATING/ELECTRICALMost home heating fire deaths involve stationary or portable space heaters. Keep anything that can burn, such as upholstered furniture, clothing or bedding at least three feet away from your heating equipment. Make sure the heater has a thermostat control mechanism so if it falls over, it will automatically shut off. If something catches fire and you can’t safely reach the outlet, go to your electrical pannel and disconnect the power. If you can’t turn off the electricity, cover the whole area with baking soda; the oxygen will be blocked and the fire will stop burning.

CANDLESLeave any matches or lighters in a locked cabinet, out of reach from your children. Keep candle flames at least 12 inches from any materials that might ignite such as curtains, blankets and decorations. If a candle does catch something on fire, smother the flames with baking soda or flour, do not use water because it will spread.

CHIMNEY’SEvery year in the US there are more than 25,000 chimney fires. Creosote, a highly flammable dark brown substance that coats chimney walls, can build-up and catch fire inside of the chimney flue, the space inside the chimney. Aim to get an inspection once a year to ensure the build-up is less than 1/8 inch thick. Prevent sparks from flying onto the carpet by using a fireplace screen. In the event of a chimney fire, use an ABC dry chemical fire extinguisher.

SMOKINGAlways smoke outside. There are a lot of things inside your home that can catch on fire if they touch a cigarette or ashes. Make sure that when

you put your cigarette out, you put it out all the way. Also, if you travel with medical oxygen, do not smoke near it because the oxygen can explode if a spark is near, even if it’s turned off.
