How do we know we are in Yorkshire?

To start off our geography topic (how we know we are in Yorkshire), this week we will be looking at some famous Yorkshire landmarks and recapping basic map skills.

1) Produce a travel brochure or Microsoft powerpoint on famous Yorkshire landmarks you could visit. These landmarks can be in either urban or rural places - do you know what these 2 words mean?). Why should people visit that place? Try to include details such as: where it is,how long it would take to get there from your house, how much it costs to visit and any other bits of information a tourist/explorer might want to know about these Yorkshire destinations.

2) Map skills 4 and 6 figure grid referencesDownload the following from the Rook’s Nest homework website

- 4 figure grid references Powerpoint - 4 figure grid references Worksheets- 6 figure grid references Powerpoint

- 6 figure grid references Worksheets

Work through the powerpoints and then complete the sheets to demonstrate your understanding of grid references.

Extension: Have a look at an Atlas or maps on the internet. Can you find famous landmarks/places in the UK/World and record their 4 or 6 figure grid reference number?

for you to have a go at, year 5 is based around ‘Living things and their habitats’

- Select ‘download resource’ for the lesson you want to look at, which will bring up a powerpoint

- Read through the powerpoint and follow the links to look at interesting video clips and complete activities

- You can complete the lessons in the suggested chronological order in whatever order you wish.

Extension: If you have already completed the Science activities found on the above website more can be found at the following: https://www.stem.org.uk/resources/community/collection/12775/year-5-living-things-and-their-habitatsThe ‘teachers notes’ documents will help children understand the task before attempting the worksheets

Art

Google search ‘Yorkshire Dales landscape artwork or paintings’’ and look at the different paintings/drawings. Which do you like/not like? Why?

After this google search: ‘jmw landscape artist yorkshire paintings’. This will bring up the work of Joseph Mallord William Turner an artist from the early 19th century who was famous for painting Yorkshire landscapes using watercolours. Again have a look at some of his work. Which do you like/not like? Why? Do you recognise any of the places painted?

Now have a go at creating your own landscape drawing. You can either have a go at copying a Yorkshire scene from the internet, a piece of Joseph Turner’s work, head out into the countryside and find one to draw and then paint (with your parents of course!) or you could even do your garden/street - as long as you enjoy doing it, it does not matter! You can always share your completed artwork with the Rooks Nest Twitter page if you wish! There are lots of videos on Youtube to help with painting using watercolours if you are unsure.

Tuesday Set of Instructions: Reading Comprehension – Word Meaning

In this lesson, we are going to explore the meaning of words in a set of instructions.

Volume: To investigate and explain cubed numbers

In our second lesson on volume we will be exploring cubed units. We will investigate what we mean by cubed numbers and relate this to our work on volume. By the end of this lesson you will be able explain, draw and find cubed numbers.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b03g64pm

Have a look at the BBC school radio dance activities found at the above link. There are some really fun ones - for the partner/group activities ask your parents/guardians/brother/sister or pretend you are in a group - use your imagination!

Alternatively, practice throwing/catching/kicking/jumping/skipping/hopping/catching whatever sport activity you can but practice doing it with BOTH hands/feet, don’t just use your dominant hand/food encourage your weaker hand/foot to become stronger. It will not happen straight over night but you could become ambidextrous (look up what that word means!)

Volume: To describe volume in cubic units

In our penultimate lesson on volume, we will use our knowledge from lesson 3 to find the volume of different shapes. We will start by looking at the three different dimensions of real life objects and then use measurements to help us find volume. By the end of this lesson, you will begin to be able to find the volume of different 3D
