The Proclamation of the New Year 5781“In the seventh month, on the first day of the month, there shall be a sacred assembly, as cessation from work, a day of commemoration proclaimed by the sounding of the Shofar.” (Numbers 29:1)

And so we gather on this holy and awesome day, to commit ourselves to the process of renewal.

On this Day of Renewal, help us recognize negative patterns in our daily interactions, and fill us with the spirit of humility and a sense of modesty that we may grow in wisdom. This is the Day of Judgement. Enable us to see ourselves as You see us from Your thrown on high. Help us consider our lives through the lens of holiness, righteousness and truth.

This day, we look back on the past year to consider our flaws and our misguided actions. Today, we dedicate ourselves to the task of doing better in the coming year.

This is the Day of Rededication: Today, on this birthday of the world, we recommit ourselves to the ongoing task of taking care of the earth and all the dwells within it.

Open our eyes the impact of our actions; open our hearts to feel the hurts we may have caused; open our ears to hear those who call out to us in their time of need; and open our hands to broaden our reach to a world in need of our ongoing care. May it be You will, Eternal One, God of all generations, that the year 5781 bring to us, to the House of Israel and to all humanity, life and health, reconciliation and renewal, happiness and peace.

Shofar (Malchuyot)The stirring sound of the Shofar proclaimed the covenant at Mount Sinai which bound our people Israel to God as a holy community. Ever since that distant day, the voice of the Shofar has resounded throughout the communities of Israel awakening our allegiance to God and Torah.

Today, we hearken to this ancient call. May the blasts we are about to hear strength us in our resolve to improve ourselves, arouse within us the will to fight for goodness and truth and direct our imaginations consider a world shaped by love and kindness to all God’s creatures.

Malchiyot proclaims that Israel’s God is the God who created, and rules over the entire universe The focus is God’s sovereignty. The section concludes with the petition M’loch al kol ha’olam kulo bich’vodecha (“Reign over the entire world in Your glory”). The benedictory conclusion is “Praised be You, Adonai, King over all the earth, Who sanctifies Israel and the Day of Remembrance.”

A Meditation on RedemptionOnce, two sages were walking very early in the valley. In the darkness they saw the glimmer of the morning star.

One said to the other:

“This is how redemption will be. The dawn breaks with a single ray of light, and bit by bit the sky is illuminated, until morning comes and the darkness is gone.”

So too redemption will occur little by little, Growing steadily and gradually until the world is full of light.

We cannot merely wait for a miracle or for the sudden transformation of the world.

We must work together to bring the day closer, step by step with every act of courage, of kindness, of healing and repair.

And we must not be discouraged by the darkness. We must lift up every spark we can and watch the horizon for the coming of dawn.

If we look closely, we will find that it has already begun.

In Your holiness, O Eternal God, give all Creation the gift of awe. Turn our fear to reverence; let us be witnesses of wonder – perceiving all nature as a prayer come alive.

In humility we turn to You on this Day of Judgement. We seek to know and understand ourselves and the world through Your heavenly perspective. We yearn for connection with all that lives, and we long to do Your will with wholeness of heart. Our goal on this Day of Judgement is to find truth.

Shofar (Shofarot)God of all lands and ages, we stand at Sinai every day. The ground under our feet is holy; the light, which shines for us, is Yours. The world burns with Your holy Presence, we need only open our eyes. Your purpose and Your wisdom pulses through every particle of matter and every moment in time.

You are just beyond the horizon of the mind. You are a vision waiting to be discovered. May the blasts that we are about to hear harken us to discovery. May these broken notes open our eyes to see the brokenness in our world and inspire us to reach out with compassion and love.

May the shrill calls of the ancient horn, open our ears to cries of distress in our homes, our neighborhoods, our communities and our world.May the penetrating blasts instill within our hearts a capacity to respond, a willingness to change and a desire to serve. As we reach for You today, O God, do not turn away. Let our efforts now and in the year to come be a pathway to Your presence.

The poetic introduction to Shofarot referring to the revelation at Sinai where the sound of the shofar was heard amidst thunder and lightning. This leads into ten verses that depict various contexts in which the shofar was, or will be, sounded, and the petition that God “sound the great shofar to proclaim our freedom,” as promised by the prophet Isaiah. The section concludes, “Praised be You, Adonai, Who hearkens in mercy to the sound of His people Israel’s shofar-blasts.”

Let us adore the Everliving God. We render praise unto You who spread out the heavens and established the earth. Your glory is revealed in the heavens above and Your greatness is manifest throughout the world. You are our God. There is none else. We bow our heads in reverence before the Eternal One, Source of all life.

May the time not be distant, O God, when Your name shall be worshipped in all the earth, when unbelief shall disappear and error be no more. Fervently we pray that the day may come when all people shall invoke Your name, when corruption and evil shall give way to purity and goodness, when superstition shall no longer enslave the mind, nor idolatry blind the eye, when all who dwell on earth shall know shall know that to You alone every knee shall bend and every tongue give praise.
