Problem:The

The infant mortality rate for African-Americans & Caribbean-

Americans is twice the rate of whites.

Lack of adequate health insurance has lead to health care

crisis affecting our communities.

Health disparities including Diabetes, Obesity, Heart Disease,

Asthma, Cancer, Kidney Disease, and HIV/AIDS have

disturbing rates among immigrant populations

Health Care must be affordable, accessible, available &

culturally-sensitive to meet the needs of immigrants.

To the practitioner of the fine arts, the contrast between light and dark(chiaroscuro) is one of the most expressive and important means of composition. The students must first of all learn to comprehend that all contrast effects are relative. A line appears long or short according to its relation to a shorter or a longer line. In a pictorial composition a large, dark form becomes more significant if a small, bright form counteracts it. A gray tone appears light or a lighter tone. If composition is to be based on a certain contrast, this relativity plays an important role. The two contrasting elements must be chosen so that they result in a definite expression.

The Three basic forms, the square, the triangle, and the circle, are typified by the four different directions in space. The character of the square is horizontal and vertical, that of the triangle diagonal, and that of the circle circular. The experience of the square produces a tense move-ment from one corner to the next, caused by the constant repetition of right angles. In the triangle, the whole variety of angles is represented. Lines can be developed whose various sections are determine by ratios. The sequence of these ratios can be varied. Proportions of 1:2:4:8:16:32 or 1:3:9:27:81 can be represented. The golden section and the proportions of the harmonic triangle must be studied, and construct-ed and contrasted as lines planes or volumes.

7

If an area is to be divided formally, there is an unlimited number of possibilities for doing it. In the chess

board, the perfect composition of a plane, the area is divided by a single, repetitive form. Both the black and white squares are reductions of the form of the whole chess boar. Other shapes which can be used to divide an area completely are the rectangle, the rhombus, the triangle, and the equilateral hexagon. Starting from one of these basic divisions one can find a large number of other

forms. The positive negative congruent forms are the most precise means of dividing an area. Knowledge of

them strengthens and deepens the students’ logical thinking in terms of form.

HISTORY

Forestdale, Inc., formally Brooklyn home For Children, began in 1854 as two separate intuitions—The Brooklyn School Association of Brooklyn Eastern

District. These schools provided academic education, plus training in domestic duties and life skills to City’s indigent children. By 1927, the two intuitions merged to form the

Brooklyn Home for Children, and a multitude of services to orphaned children. In 1942, the Agency moved to its present site in Forest Hills, and in 1988 was renamed

Forestdale, Inc.

BACKGROUND

The goal of the program is to increase the awareness of causes of Infant Mortality. The health of children is an important measure of the overall health of community. Ensuring that children get a health start

and learn health behaviors has many long-term benefits. Healthy babies start with healthy families.

We encourage parents to get involved early and throughout their children’s lives to help build and maintain a solid family structure. If you know a young mother with a child under two years old or

younger, let us build, rebuild or maintain the foundation that holds the family together.

WHERE ARE WE?

The Forestdale Infant Mortality Reduction Project Is located at

67-35 112th Street Forest Hills, NY 11375

A satellite office is at 109-02 Guy Brewer BLVD. Jamaica, Queens.

WHAT ARE WE DOING?

Forestdale Inc.’s Infant Mortality Reduction Project targets Queens. Characterized by high rates of poor birth outcomes Queens

has the third highest incidence of infant mortality in New York City. We are working

hard to stop this in order to better our community.
