Rosco IT Solutions Ltd Glasgow/Aberdeen

November 2010 to August 2014 Director and Lead IT Consultant

In November 2010; As an IT engineer struggling to find work at the height of the recession in Glasgow, I took the decision to launch Rosco IT Solutions Ltd as a micro-enterprise contracting vehicle focusing on providing short-term technical consultancy and IT Engineer resourcing to businesses. Initially the business was based in primarily in the Aberdeen area and throughout the UK. The business also catered for the bespoke IT projects market where projects were designed from the ground up from concept to plan, resource procurement, and pilot then implementation.

Rosco IT Solutions was a sole trade IT consultancy and contractor business focused on meeting the resource and business technology requirements of organisations. We provided holiday cover, backfill resourcing, short notice sick cover and Project support in a variety of technologies on a negotiated day rate basis. We worked with recruitment agencies, SME IT support companies and other businesses that required our expertise. Although ultimately the business succumbed to increased competition in the market and deprecation of my skillset due to changes in technology, I thoroughly enjoyed my time working with local businesses and helping them succeed in their ventures. The experience, skills gained and lessons learned proved instrumental later in my career.

Just some of the projects I undertook in the role were:

•   Migration of an on-premise Exchange 2003 to hosted exchange 2010 involving multiple stakeholders. •   Social media training for an independent distributor of a major international health and nutrition brand. •   Repair and maintenance of a wireless network for a photographic and design business. •   Rollout of WSUS, Sophos and Remote Management systems to proactively manage patch management, events and endpoint

security. •   Created a proposal for a multi-million pound electrical contractor for the management of their UK wide IT infrastructure,

including tailored proposed contract and SLA involving multiple stakeholders. •   Implemented a social media integrated helpdesk and billing system for management of support tickets, estimates and invoices.

Some of my key commercial achievements included:

•   Going from a £300 loss in year one to a £36,000 turnover in the company’s 2012/2013 financial year. •   Partnerships with Microsoft, Sophos and Kashflow among others. •   Provision of 1st Line support for Wood Group’s IT help desk “Unity”.

Amor Group Ltd (Now Owned by Lockheed Martin)

January 2012 to June 2012 Desktop Support Analyst

During a brief hiatus for Rosco IT for family reasons which ultimately precipitated my move from Glasgow to Aberdeen I was employed by Amor to assist in supporting their Oil and Gas clients desktop infrastructure on an ad-hoc basis. Providing holiday, sickness and other leave cover for other engineers as well as additional resources for projects.

Key Achievements in the role included:

•   Part of a project team that rolled out Windows 7 and Office 2010 to over 800 desktops across a clients Aberdeen and London offices. Key technologies utilised included App-V, Windows 7, SCCM and Citrix. Positive feedback from the project manager on “LinkedIn” as a result.

•   Involved in high volume App sequencing and App testing prior to a rollout of Windows 7 and Server 2008 R2. •   Gained significant experience in supporting corporate clients and adhering to ITIL and project management principles. •   Provided help desk as well as 2nd Line cover in addition to UK Wide travel as required.

I never had the opportunity to attend university but in many ways I have learnt a lot more about people and life in general through my experience in professional life from both my successes and my failures. Fundamentally I have found that business is about people and providing solutions to problems through innovation, high standards of service and a genuine commitment to building lasting relationships.

Interests and Hobbies The Wishing Tree is likely to occupy a significant proportion of my spare time in coming months but when I do catch a moment to myself (usually on a Sunday) I can often be found playing PS4 games, meeting up with friends and catching the latest box office flick at the local cinema. I love technology and gadgets which is a hangover from my many years as an IT Consultant. In recent years though I also find myself more and more interested in politics (particularly surrounding economic reform) and community engagement although I’m not affiliated with any political parties. I try to strike a balance between furthering the charitable objects of my organisation and respecting the perspective of those who do not share my views.
