Close: “The Future of Rotary and Rotaract is in our hands”
Good afternoon and official greetings from Rotary District 6920.
As Assistant Governor, it gives me great pleasure to congratulate the new Valdosta State University Rotaract Club sponsored by the Rotary Club of Valdosta.
For those attending today who may not know, Rotaract is a word taken from a combination of Rotary and action and is specifically a Rotary-sponsored service club chartered for colleges and universities for both men and women.
Rotaract clubs are part of a global effort to bring peace and international understanding to the world. This effort starts at the community level but knows no limits in its outreach.
Rotaract has evolved quickly in its short but dynamic history. In the early 1960s, Rotary clubs around the world began to sponsor university youth groups as community service projects. Then in 1968 Rotary International considered this club activity to have international relevance, and Rotaract was born as an official program for Rotary.
The purpose of Rotaract is to provide an opportunity for individuals to enhance their knowledge and skills in order to assist in their personal development, while also addressing the physical and social needs of their communities through a framework of friendship and community service.
Rotaract clubs are “partners in service” and key members of the Rotary family and Rotary International. As one of the most signifi-cant and fastest-growing programs of Rotary service, Rotaract now has more than 8,000 clubs in some 155 countries and geographic areas.
Now, on behalf of Rotary District 6920, Governor Clyde Taylor, my congratulations and best wishes to the new Valdosta State University Rotaract Club. May you always remember to carry forth the ideals of Rotary and “service above self.”
Representing Rotary District 6920 was Rotary Assistant Governor Bob Harrison. Harrison delivered an official welcome and challenge from District Governor Clyde Taylor.
Bob is seen here presenting Rotaract inaugural President Mahja Zeon with a certificate of appreciation for her work and dedication to starting the Valdosta State University Rotaract.
Past President Dr. Carl Cates presented the officers with the club’s
ceremonials. He is seen here presenting the official gavel to
President Mahja Zeon.
President Dr. Dennis Marks led the officers in the Rotaract oath. Marks led for incoming president Oprah Zeon who was unable to attend due to an auto-mobile accident. Please remember Miss Zeon in your thoughts and prayers.
The inaugural officers for the club are (l to r) President Mahja Zeon, Treasurer Vanessa Manning, and secretary Nikki Hill.
To end the ceremonies, Rotaract President Mahja Zeon had the opportunity to use her
official gavel for the first time. She closed our meeting by ringing the new Rotaract bell.
