ROTARY CLUB OF ABILENE The Rotator S e r v i c e A b o v e S e l f THIS WEEK: Membership and Orientation Meeting What does your membership mean? This year's officers will explain the structure of the club, the responsibilities of board members, plans for this year, and generally inform us what your membership does mean! Come if you're new to Rotary or our club and if you've been around for decades, come get excited all over again! President Kate Alvarez LAST MEETING: Aug. 24, 2018 RYLA Students/Exchange Student RYLA student Leif Erik Paul Johnson attended RYLA this past June. He is in Boy Scouts with Troop 206 as well as Sea Scouts with Ship 486. He is sixteen and a junior at Jim Ned High School where he is in UIL OneAct Play and Golf. Leif plays electric bass guitar in a band with friends and likes listening to music such as Classic Rock and Alternative Rock. He is the son of Rotarian Erik Johnson and sister of Hatti who attended RYLA in the summer of 2015. Alaina Peters, below left, daughter of Rotarian Whitney Peters told of her experience at RYLA several years ago In Fayetteville, NC and the continuing impact of the event. Nanda Hernandes, bottom right, is an exchange student from Brazil. She is attending Wylie High School. ROTARIAN OF THE WEEK BARBARA ROLLINS Barbara Breedlove Rollins was born an Aggie in College Station a few weeks after her dad got his Masters degree. She was the second of four gils in the family. Quickly the females went to Quanah, Texas, while Dad was trained in New Jersey. They lived in Lubbock nine years while Dad traveled West Texas and New Mexico selling chlorinators. Moving to Quanah, where Barbara's dad and both grandfathers were Rotarians and Barbara and two sisters were pianists for the club, Barbara graduated from Quanah High School in 1965 then received a B.S.inSecondary Education (Spanish and English) from Aug. 31, 2018

         President Kate Alvarez introduced KenHogan last Friday as our newest member.Ken is association executive for theAbilene Association of Realtors.

  

 SPEAKERS NEEDED

Kelly Thompson, this year's program chair, is on the hunt forsome dynamicspeakers and entertainment. She has designed a flyer for youto present to your prospective speakers that should answer many questions, i.e.,

McMurry in 1969. She taughtseventh and eighth grade inBrownfield, got an M.A. inChristian Education fromScarritt College for ChristianWorkers in Nashville,Tennessee. She was churchstaff for a third church, nowUniversity United Methodistin Fort Worth. (The other twowere summer jobs."   Barbara married MikeRollins in 1974, moved toWichita Falls where she settype for a Church of Christpublishing company whereshe was allowed to editEnglish but not theology.Moving to Austin for Mike'swork she became a legalsecretary. Getting bored aftereighteen months, she went toU.T. Law School for the fun ofit. Graduating with honors,she decided to  practice law,and the family moved toAbilene where she worked forBradbury and Tippen, whichevolved to Bradbury, Tippen,Rollins & Adkins.    Barbara and Mike havesons David and Jeffrey andgrandsons Jack and Justinwho seven. They and parentsDavid and Dezi live in Frisco.Jeffrey moved into Barbaraand Mike's house this weekbut continues to workcomputer magic for theCollege of Education atGrand Valley State Universityin Grand Rapids, Michigan.    Barbara ran for the newlycreated County Court at Law#2 in 1988, was elected andserved until January 1, 2010.When her successor passedaway in 2016 theCommissioners Courtappointed Barbara to serveanother sixteen months, fromwhich she has re­retired.

we cover the cost of their meal plus ONE. We have a projector but they mustbring their own computer, etc.     At this time we only have three openings until the end of the year. However,the calendar is wide open beginning the first of 2019. 

 DUES

Statements for July ­ December 2018 have been mailed. If you have anyquestions, please contact our treasurer, Peter Agnell. The statement includes abreakout of the $130 dues.

  NEW MEMBER LUNCH POLICY  

The Rotarian bringing a prospective new member to a meeting is responsible forpaying for his/her lunch. The only free lunch from the club for the new member ison the day he/she is introduced as a new member. 

CLUB ATTENDANCE August 24, 2018 meeting

43 members out of 71 for an attendance rate of 61%.
