ROTARY CLUB OF AHMEDABADA JOURNEY OF SERVICE
Ahmedabad “Manchester of India” was the 9th city in the British India era to be the recipient of Charter No. 4008 from the Rotary International, and thus was established the Rotary Club of Ahmedabad on 15th July 1936. Efforts of Rtn. Herbert Bryant as the Field Representative having met prominent citizens of Ahmedabad in early 1936 and a provisional meeting presided over by the then District Judge Mr. N. S. Lokur saw the formation of the Rotary Club of Ahmedabad with 26 Charter Members. The Charter was delivered by the then District Governor Rtn. F.E. (later known as Frederick) James on 23rd August, 1936. The journey began with its association being a part of R.I. District Number was Provisional A, later renumbered to 89, and thereafter as 305, since 1991-92 as 3050 and at present we are proud to be the senior most Rotary Club of RI District 3054. Rtn. G.V. Mavalankar who later had the distinction of being elected to the post of the first speaker of the first Lok Sabha of independent India took upon his broad shoulders the Club stewardship which has seen it to be succeeded by an array of prominent professionals, businessman and citizens of the city of Ahmedabad. The Rotary Club of Ahmedabad in its voyage since last 80 years has given unto the District 9 District Governors Rtn. H. M. Desai, Rtn. I. R. Bhagat, Rtn. Jitendra Mehta, Rtn. K. C. Munshaw, Rtn. R. K. Patell, Rtn. T. H. Patel, Rtn. Dr. G. B. Mohile, Rtn. M. P. Fadia, Rtn. J. M. Shah while Rtn. Jamshed Cama who was elected Governor for 1948-49 died in a plane crash at Shannon, Ireland, while on his way to International Assembly as Governor Nominee. Out of the notable contributions amongst the membership which deserve special mention are that of Rtn. PDG R. K. Patell who also was the Member of the Legislative Assembly of Gujarat and also headed the BCCI as its President; followed by that of Rtn. Kasturbhai Lalbhai a Leader of Cotton and Textile Industry and a pioneer in establishing educational institutions in Ahmedabad; along with likes of Rtn. Jaykrishna Harivallabhdas, Rtn. Balkrishna Harivallabhdas who were the Doyens of India; Padma Shree Rtn. Dr. Devendra Patel a recipient of the

renowned Dr. B. C. Roy Award and Founder and Pioneer of the Cancer Institute having outstanding contribution towards Cancer research, awareness, detection and treatment; Rtn. Prof. S. B. Vora Vice-Chancellor of Gujarat University and educationist of impeccable reputation; Rtn. Pradeep Parikh having risen to august post such as the Vice-President, Central Income Tax Tribunal, New Delhi. This Club’s strict adherence to the manual of procedure has earned for itself a unique distinction of being called an “MOP” Club. In its passage of a period more than that of four score and a few years, saw the Rotary Club of Ahmedabad nurture within its fold bringing Rotary Clubs of Rajkot, Bhavnagar, Bharuch, Visnagar, Bikaner, Okha (Now named Dwarka), Nadiad, Palanpur, Ahmedabad-South, Dehgam, Khambhat, Kalol, Patan, Unjha, Ahmedabad-North and Sabarmati – in all 16 Clubs into fruition. The first Rotaract Club and Inerwheel Club in the District were promoted and formed by the Rotary Club of Ahmedabad. During the entire course of its existence the Rotary Club of Ahmedabad has rendered distinguished service, ensured ubiquitous presence and has had effective participation on all Four Avenues of Service, which has received accolades consistently both from the Rotary International as well as the District level. The Rotary Club of Ahmedabad has had the distinction of being the architect in creation, conception and materialization of several such institutions that even as of now are rendering services to the larger cause of humanity. The Clock turned full circle and in this journey, upon which we embarked with Late Rtn. G. V. Mavalankar, just refuses to lose its youthful zest and vigour and in its 75th Year we had as the President Rtn. Dr. Ujwala Mavalankar – the grand-daughter-in-law of our founder President.
Thus, this is what we are and the journey continues in 82nd year……….
