originally proposed, to New Generations, the Council narrowly supported theaddition to article 5 of the Standard Rotary Club Constitution. The 263-250vote was received by surprised gasps and applause after a short debate.

New Generations joins Club Service, Vocational Service, Community Service, and International Service as the foundation of club activity. Before starting aproject, Rotarians are asked to think broadly about how their club and itsmembers could contribute within each avenue.

"It's a significant change – a historic day in Rotary," said Council Chair MarkDaniel Maloney. "Rotarians have always strongly supported youth activitieseven though they were never part of the four Avenues of Service. I think thisstrengthens our commitment."

The Avenue of New Generations recognizes the positive change implementedby youth and young adults involved in leadership development activities, community and international service projects, and exchange programs thatenrich and foster world peace and cultural understanding.

Rotary International President's Report on Haitiby Mitchell, Jay

My fellow Rotarians,

Rotary Club of Bainbridge Island - eBulletin http://www.clubrunner.ca/CPrg/Bulletin/SendBulletinEmail.aspx?ci...

Page 9: Rotary Club of Bainbridge I 11 2010.p… · Welcome Steve! New Member - Aaron Strom by Jay Mitchell Aaron Strom was inducted onApril 19th. Aaron is a third generation Bainbridge Islander,

Shortly after the earthquake hit Haiti in January, Rotarians began makingphone calls and sending e-mails to discuss how they could help. When RotaryInternational posted its first story on Rotary's immediate relief efforts,Rotarians took this discussion online. The very first comment about the storyexpressed what so many Rotarians were thinking: "If they begin sendingRotarians over to help in any way, please let me know if I can help."

This plea was multiplied over the following days on Rotary's website and oursocial media pages. Rotarians also reported what they were doing: collectingthousands of dollars to fund ShelterBoxes and Aquaboxes, contributing toRotary's Haiti Earthquake Relief Fund, and organizing ways to transport food, supplies, and medical personnel to the devastated country.

On the ground in and around Haiti, Rotarians were also busy. Local Rotarianshelped distribute the ShelterBoxes to some of those left homeless. RotarianClaude Surena, a physician, took 100 injured earthquake victims into his home, which he managed to turn into a makeshift hospital despite the damage it hadsustained. District 7020 established a relief fund, flew in planes loaded withmedical supplies, and strategized to provide assistance in the weeks followingthe disaster.

And it is in those weeks – and months and even years – that Rotary can makeits greatest contribution. Rotary is not a disaster relief agency, but we arevery good at long-term recovery. After all the media attention dies down,Rotary will still be there on the ground – in Haiti's case, with 17 local clubs andthousands of willing partner clubs. If Rotary's recovery efforts in Bangladesh,Honduras, Indonesia, and countless other countries are any indication,Rotarians will be in Haiti long after public interest has faded and the mediahave moved on.

What microfinance can achieve

Flora is a charismatic entrepreneur, well-known in her community of Dar esSalaam, Tanzania. She runs her business from her tiny home, off a sidestreet and down a back alley. Her house is crammed with one hundredplastic stacking chairs and three large tents, which she rents out forweddings, funerals, and other events.Flora is able to run her business with the help of microloans from Tujijenge,a Tanzanian microfinance institution. These small loans have enabled her toincrease her rental inventory, which has brought in more income for herfamily. Thanks to her expanding business, she is able to pay back her loansquickly, save money, send her son to school and feed her family.Like other members of Tujijenge, Flora wastes nothing. She uses every lastasset for productive purposes. For instance, her refrigerator is full of soda, which she sells around the neighborhood in her spare time. Now Flora is making plans to expand her business further, and dreams ofone day setting up a hair salon. What does Flora have to do with Bainbridge Island? The Bainbridge IslandRotary Club is helping Tujigenge deliver microloans. In partnership with oursister Mzizma Rotary Club in Tanzania, and Unitus, a Redmond basedinternational microfinance organization, we are helping expand Tujijenge'sreach and number of loans. Through this partnership, BI Rotary plans toreach 500 women and families in Dar es Salaam who are living on less than$2 per day, just like Flora. This kind of project is both new and old for Rotary. In the last twelve years,we have constructed over 80 wells in Uganda. We have seen what ourinvestment of time and money can do to improve the quality of life of ourfriends on the other side of the world. Now we are expanding our focus tomicroloans because they have proven to be a remarkably effective tool forhelping families rise from poverty.

Microloans are very small loans given to groups of 15-40 members, whichare split into sub-groups of 4-7. Members of each group act as guarantorsof each other's loans. For many poor borrowers, the group's guarantee isthe only collateral they can offer. But it is effective! Microloans tend to haveincredibly high repayment rates of about 95%! The borrowers (who aremostly women) use the loans to start businesses selling food, second-handclothing, and neighborhood services. But micro lending is not just about receiving money. Once accepted for aloan, groups receive business training, formulate group by-laws, and opena bank account. They also elect group leaders and select a name. Manygroup names convey the members' strong national pride. Flora's group iscalled "Mungu Ibariki" or "God Bless Tanzania."A final requirement before the group can receive loans is the ability tosave; members are required to save 20% of the expected amount of theloan during the training sessions. The rationale behind this is to build adiscipline of making weekly repayments including saving right from thebeginning. BI Rotary is supporting the work of Tujijenge with agrant of $8,000. But over the next year we hope to double thatwith contributions from other Rotary clubs and from the public. We
