Presidents Report Thanks to everyone who came to the District Gov-ernor’s night on Thursday. It was a pleasure to welcome David and Alison for the annual visit. there are many ways we could support and do good work in this area, Community are now look-ing at this. It was my pleasure on Wednesday the 22nd to have a discussion with Vivienne Zoppolato, Me-gan and Malcolm, regarding potential member-ship of the Club. Megan is really concentrating on the process of membership application being beneficial for both sides, thanks Megan. For those who weren’t there on Thursday we had the flyer for the “Days for Girls” afternoon tea cir-culated. It will be on the 22nd of August, I can’t think of anything more enjoyable than cakes, champagne and the opportunity to raise money for a worthwhile cause. For any members whose partners would like to attend please let them know of this date. I have asked David to include an item in the Bul-letin, if there’s room, this is Greg’s notes on Pro-gram from the Forum, as I think it gives a good overview for members and partners.

Board meetings have found a new home since we had to leave Beauie RSL. The Beaumaris Senior Citizens rooms at the back of Beaumar-is Library - we don’t have to pay, it’s a con-firmed regular booking and its close for most members of the Board. Win: Win, thanks Ker-rie. It will be a busy week again coming up, as we have another Membership discussion on Wednesday, an extraordinary Board meeting on Tuesday regarding the Sabu project, and our looked forward to Fellowship night on Thursday. On Friday Megan, Lynda and I go to the District membership seminar. Once you join Rotary there’s always an oppor-tunity for service, fun and learning, thanks Ro-tary!

David and Alison Tolstrup District Governor and Partner David first came into contact with Rotary in1970 when he was selected by the Rotary Club of Box Hill to attend RYLA, the club he joined in 1982. David was President in 1993-94. He has also served at District level as an Assistant Governor, GSE Committee Chair, Secretary and Treasurer In his business life David was an insurance broker, being an equity partner in a brokerage based in Surrey Hills. He retired from business in 2006. Da-vid served on many business committees and was for two years President of the Insurance Institute of Victoria.

Community involvement has always been a part of David’s life. He has served in a variety of capacities and leadership roles in a diverse range of communi-ty organisations including the board of a TAPE col-lege. David is justice of the Peace, and previously served as an Honorary Bail justice. \ Alison, owned her own Pharmacy before retiring. She has always supported David’s Rotary involve-ment. Alison recently served a two year term as Ladies President of the Box Hill Golf Club. Alison and David have two adult sons, a lovely daughter-in-law and a very new Grandson. David and Alison both spoke with great enthusiasm and clarity about their respective messages. These are summarised below. My aim as District Governor is to make every mem-ber proud to be a Rotarian It is a pleasure for Ali-son and me to be here and enjoy the hospitality of such a vibrant club. I am going to going to talk about three things:

1. Message from Ravi 2. Big picture: Internationally and District 3. Your Club

This year’s Rotary International theme “Be a Gift to The World”

By this RI President K.R. “Ravi” Ravindran means we should give of our talents, time, resources, gifts and passions. In essence we should could contin-ue to do what we are doing. Some of Ravi's main areas of focus are; Polio; a deeply personal issue as his Mother died of polio. He personally brokered a cease fire in Sri Lanka’s civil war to allow an immunisation program to be implemented. Support Foundation: the engine room of Rotary around the world. Clubs should support it but also actively use it to implement projects. Global Rewards; Members of the Rotary community work hard to create positive change at home and around the world. And because of this, they’re mak-ing clubs stronger, communities better, and peace possible. Thank them for their dedication and valua-ble contributions by recognizing them with one of the many Rotary awards. Foundation Foundation global grants have been moved on to a more professional sustainable footing. Projects must be properly documented and proven to by their host community to be of ongoing value. Cul-tural fit and 5 to 10 year life spans will be essential criteria for Foundation global funding in the future. District grants District $9810 now has $150K for allocation to Dis-trict grants for local / national / or international pro-

jects. There are now less restrictions on what this money can be used for. Australian Rotary Health Starting with its pioneering work with SIDS ARH is a major Rotary initiative. It is now the largest private funder of mental health research in Australia. Indigenous Scholarships Indigenous Health scholarships of $2500 can re-ceive matching Federal grants. District initiatives Details on District Seminars can be found in the Di-rectory. Recommended are; Service Membership Foundation Conference Acknowledge RCOB as very strong supporter of the Conference. Membership Key needs are to focus on relevance, engagement and retention. Key District emphasis areas for the year are;

Domestic Violence Mental health Men's health RYDA Indigenous projects Interplast

Hoping to sponsor one Team at a cost of $45k

Alison's Project Food Security for Indigenous Schoolchildren in the Kimberley Area Adequate nutrition is essential for a healthy body and mind. Children denied this basic right cannot live and learn well; many resort to stealing food to fill their hungry stomachs. This project addresses this in two ways; Training program at Feed the Little Children (FTLC) _ www.feedthelittlechildren.org.au FTLC is an emergency food relief charity in Broome that was created to address the problem of starving young children stealing food. It provides a nutritious evening meal to about 300 Broome children, 75% of whom are under 10 years old. In partnership with the Rotary Club of Broome this pro-ject will fund development of a course at the Kimberley Training Institute to train community members to conduct

workshops in the homes of families of FTLC clients giv-ing them adequate skills to feed their own families. Fund an Aboriginal Education Worker to maintain the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden at Purnulu-lu Independent Aboriginal Community School www.purnululuschool.com.au This school addresses the issue of adequate nutrition by providing breakfast, morning tea and lunch for its stu-dents: a more expensive exercise due to the cost of transport to its distant location. The school is establishing a Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden, a program well recognised for its many benefits to schools and commu-nities. At Purnululu it will grow the fresh produce for the children’s meals - a huge cost saving. Providing employ-ment for a community member is also very valuable.
