On the Cover

What is a Rotarian?

A Rotarian is a person who digs wells from which they will

never drink

A person who vaccinates children they will never meet

A person who restores sight for those they will never see

A person who builds houses they will never live in

A person who knows real happiness, which as Albert

Schweitser said, can only be found by serving others

Blast from the past - the year 1993 – 1994 RI President Robert R. Barth - Believe in What You Do - Do What You Believe In.

President Ron Gordon

This year saw a change in venue to the Hurstbridge Bowling Club where the welcome was warm and the facilities more suited to our needs. We were unable to find a similar venue in Diamond Creek. President Ron Gordon stressed the need for the Community to be aware of Rotary and the club set out to achieve this with exposure in the Diamond Creek News. Board meetings were held at Ellis Cottage and the warm fire and port are mentioned in despatches. A major achievement was the formation of a Probus Club for Diamond Creek with 70 members. John McCrohan became the first President. The 200kgs of clothing which had been collected for Fiji was transported at last as the excess baggage of a group of friendly travel agents. The arrival was welcomed and graphic reports and photos were sent by Isaac. The club raised and forwarded $1600 to the village for the water supply project and this was turned on in June. Involvement in the Blue Light Disco and the Fire Brigade continued in our second year.

GSE

Our first taste of Group Study Exchange was with the Brazilian team who spent five days with us, attending to their projects, sharing our homes and spending time enjoying the tourist interests of Melbourne.

The changeover was held on 5th July 1994 at The Dauphine Restaurant, Main Road, Eltham.

Everyone needs a purpose in life. For some it is their families, for some it is a major interest or hobby such as golf or boating, politics or travel. Perhaps for some Rotarians, their purpose in life is Rotary! But for many people, particularly males, the purpose that they have always had has been their work!

However, often when retirement or retrenchment comes, they are not as fulfilled or as happy as they expected to be. This can be for many reasons – ill health, shortage of funds, lack of interests and most of all – absence of social interaction. Whilst working, contact and communication with others is taking place all the time, however when they retire often that interaction ceases.

This can lead to depression and a sense of isolation. It is widely recognised that men find it harder to talk about their feelings or even to take an interest in their health and well-being. This sense of isolation can lead to even more extreme problems such as alcohol or substance abuse or even suicide. But there is hope. One organisation which is gaining momentum in working with males is the Men’s Shed.

Joining a Men’s Shed gives the participants a sense of purpose and

activities in which to participate. The environment is non-threatening, and men have the opportunity to use their existing skills, to learn new skills and in many cases to give back to the community. But more importantly, they have the opportunity to talk to other men in a secure setting where they can open up if they feel the need.

Tonight’s Guest Speaker is Leigh Marshall, the co-ordinator of the newly established Men’s Shed in Diamond Creek. The inaugural meeting which was attended by several of us, was held in November and already the group is thriving. There is obviously a strong need for this in our local area and many local men have embraced it! This is a very worthwhile and positive community project and there may be opportunities for our Club to have some involvement with it.

what happened last week ? From the 20th December 2011 (O so long ago) Past President Clyde opened the meeting and conveyed thanks to the club from the Diamond Creek Combined Churches , for our efforts with the BBQ at the Christmas Carols on Sunday.

John Egan read out thanks from Ashley Woodcock to the club.

Greg Adams advised that $80,000 of the Club’s money had been placed in an investment account.

Greg Adams, as editor of the Bulletin, advised the club that a mistake was made in the bulletin printed May 17th and apologized, saying that there was no link between David Shave and Shave Human Resources at the time of printing as may have been implied.

David Palermo requested support from club members for the bike ride he will be doing in October next year.

PP Geoff Swan asked members to suggest locations for the WEEKEND MYSTERY TOUR on APRIL 27th-28th next year. Notify the Secretary of your favorite location and it could be chosen and bring your friends.

PP John Gatt advised the club of his and Eileen’s travels in the near future, including International Assembly in San Diego, a week of Home stay in Florida and International Convention in Bangkok in May.
