Dear Lord,

We pray for all our motorists that they exercise

patience, calmness, and restraint in the midst of

all these traffic so that untoward altercations,

"TOP OF THE WORLD"

Such a feelin's comin' over me

There is wonder in 'most ev'ry thing I see

Not a cloud in the sky, got the sun in my eyes

And I won't be surprised if it's a dream

Everything I want the world to be

Is now comin' true especially for me

And the reason is clear, it's because you are here

You're the nearest thing to heaven that I've seen

I'm on the top of the world lookin' down on creation

And the only explanation I can find

Is the love that I've found ever since you've been around

Your love's put me at the top of the world

Somethin' in the wind has learned my name

And it's tellin' me that things are not the same

In the leaves on the trees and the touch of the breeze

There's a pleasin' sense of happiness for me

There is only one wish on my mind

When this day is through I hope that I will find

That tomorrow will be just the same for you and me

All I need will be mine if you are here

I'm on the top of the world lookin' down on creation

And the only explanation I can find

Is the love that I've found ever since you've been around

Your love's put me at the top of the world

Pres. Ogie Lim

Fellow Pasig Rotarians:

Out of the Eight Pies of Leadership our Club is pursuing, four

were discussed in our last club assembly and the other two were

presented by PE Jess and PND RJ the meeting before. The last two

will be presented within the month of August. Now, let us walk

through these presentations.

Secretary Ray Armas, the leader of the third pie concerned with

Fund Raising and Fellowship, began the presentation. He

highlighted that the list of the proposed RC Pasig Activities for the

year will now appear in the last pages of our Tinig. Please take

note that the list of activities is only a guide, which may be altered

based on the actual happenings on the ground. As an example, the

launching of the water hyacinth project scheduled on the month of

July had to be re-scheduled in August due to circumstances

beyond our control. At this point, I emphasize that the task of

Secretary Ray is to keep the concerned Pangkat leaders, as well as

the heads of each monthly activity, always on their toes.

The heads of these activities are as follows: PE Jess supervises the

Water Hyacinth Launching, Bingo Socials, Fun Run, and Bicycle

Tourney; PN John handles the Stipend Giving, Interact and

Rotaract Organizations, Career Guidance, and Movie Screening;

PP Conrad Cuesta runs the Golf Tournament; Director Arnel

Estaniel leads the Tree Planting Activity; Chair Albert Mendiola

coordinates the MFI Training and the Bowling Tournament; and

Director Raj administers the Shooting Fest and Sports Equipment

Donation.

Continuation 1.

We still need volunteers for the following activities, viz: Gift

Giving, Christmas Party, Anniversary Celebration, Concert,

Medical Mission, and Family Outing. Hopefully, I will receive

feelers within three months before the actual event; otherwise, I

may have to use my “Digong” Powers, invoking again the oath

that we all took as a Rotarian.

Directors Bebert and Albert who head the Recruitment and

Retention respectively, were the next to present. I cannot

overemphasize how impressed I was with their presentation.

Bebert made a very innovative proposal to motivate us to invite

more Rotarians. He encouraged each Pangkat to invite at least

two potential members. The meals of their invitees will be shouldered by the club; but if their invitees failed to make the

membership for whatever reason, then their meals will be billed to

the sponsoring Rotarian. And, as an added premium, all of the

members of Pangkat who has successfully sponsored a new

member will be given the benefit of an excused absence in the

weekly meeting. That means that for example, Pangkat No. 1 had

sponsored two Rotarians in the person of Rtn Pal and Rtn Ping,

then all of its members gain two bonus attendances.

On the part of Albert, as head of the Retention, he stated that his

strategy to retain members is by keeping all of us involved in the

Rotary activities that will be of interest to individual members. His

action plans to reach the 100% retention are:

1. To keep a record and monitor the names of the whole

membership, their contact numbers, and attendance in

every meeting in the calendar year 2016-2017;

2. To keep a record of on-going club projects and activities,

noting each of their participants and attendees;

ROTARY CLUB OF PASIG

Tinig Newsletter August 4, 2016

Continuation 2.

3. To present to the Board, on a quarterly basis, the

performance of regular attendees, as well as the status of

lagging members; and,

4. To conduct pre-approved RC Pasig activities that will

foster membership participation, involvement, interaction,

and camaraderie.

Albert also presented additional activities that may be of interest

to RC Pasig Rotarians. These will be discussed in our next Board

meeting. He also coined a nice and interesting acronym, PICNIC.

We are all invited to go to a PICNIC, which stands for:

Participate, Involve, Concern, Nurture, Interact, and Camaraderie.

Chair Nick Guzman of Foundation Giving presented his plan to make our club a 100% Paul Harris Fellow and a member of EREY

club. This entails that all of us should donate at least USD100 to

the Rotary Foundation. He also wants our club to be # 1 in

Foundation Giving and he intends to encourage more of our

members to be major donors. I asked Chair Nick to give me his

action plan on how he intends to achieve those targets. On a high

note, given that PDG Raffy just signed a big fat check last

meeting, I surmise that the targets of Chair Nick are more than half

done.

Director Emil Misa was the last to present. His presentation was

the most controversial, to say the least. His non-traditional

approach to public image caught the eye, as well as the nerves of

PDG Raffy, PP Conrad, Rtn Kel, and I included. Nevertheless, I

am inclined to support whatever his plans and programs in order to

give a good impression of what our club is doing. I researched

before I appointed Emil to head the Public Image Committee. And

as I have always done in the past, I chose the best man for this job.

Continuation 3.

It goes without saying that after I gave him my crystal clear

expectations, I take the hell out of his way.

During my term as president, there are some projects that will

push through and there are some that may not. But all the

programmed and pipeline projects of the club will see the light of

day in this column, always with the fervent hope that with the

support of RC Pasig Rotarians, these will all come true.

One of these pipeline projects that I am very much excited about is

the MFI training. Director Albert Mendiola has accepted the

chairmanship of this another noble project. You may recall that

former Rtn. Tony Kosca, now president of MFI, was our guest

speaker last Rotary year. In his speech, he told us that MFI has funds for the training expenses and they are just waiting for

qualified students to train. Two weeks ago, I was invited to a

forum in the office of the new Eastern Police Director, P/Sr. Supt.

Romy Sapitula. He requested the PCA Metropolitan Chapter

(PCAM), where I served as a past president, to accept rehabilitated

drug users as workers so as to integrate them back to the society.

This gave me an idea to have them trained in the MFI Training

Center with PCAM hiring them afterwards.

Last meeting, when I was seated near HOF Rhett Ermita, I told

him that idea. He immediately supported it and encouraged me to

call Director P/Sr. Supt. Sapitula. Right then, I invited Director

P/Sr. Supt. Sapitula to be our resource speaker on August 4, 2016.

He readily accepted the invitation.

Unfortunately, I realized belatedly that I already gave PP Bert

Albano the go signal to invite his friend to be our guest speaker on

that date. Well, my invitation to Director P/Sr. Supt. Sapitula was

ROTARY CLUB OF PASIG

Tinig Newsletter August 4, 2016

Continuation 4.

a spur of the moment; and for this, I asked PP Bert for forgiveness.

I pray that the damage is not too much to bear.

If the MFI training program pushes through, this will be another

project worth all the risks. As PP Rhett texted me, “Let’s think of

special solicitations from institutions to fund the project.” Indeed,

Sir. So now, we appeal to our generous fellow Rotarians. Let us

support this project with the sincerest intentions, and be true to

ourselves – Rotarians Serving Humanity!

Two weeks of the lengthy plans and program of the POgie’s

presidency seemed not enough as both ended past 2:00. Even Rtn.

Kel had his two cents worth. But the simplicity of PDG Raffy’s

suggestion on how to double the membership, i.e., each member

must sponsor just one, would double our membership. Yes,

simple, doable BUT the more than 20% regular in their regularity

of non-attendance?

When CP Manny Reyes comes, expect age increase in the Rotary

Foundation contributions. PP Jun Zafra increased his Paul Harris

contributions, to what number, I am not aware now. But the real

show of the afternoon was when PDG Raffy gave his

US$83,000.00 thereby making his 1st million dollar in sight.

Malapit na. Raffy is near homestretch of his US$1 million to the

Rotary Foundation BUT surely he would be the first Filipino to

give that huge amount.

Rtn. Roman Romulo was a surprised attendee last week. He was

made to read the invocation, and, thereafter led the Pambansang

Awit. Na the marcha March Tune suggested by PP Peping.

Did you realize the father-son membership in our club dwindled a

lot already. And, to think the sons of IPP Ner & Dir Ray Armas

are in grave danger of returning their classification.

Our pangkat Roster for this RY shows two very interesting print

outs. Baby Rtn. Ping Tan is under Pangkat One under POgie,

surprisingly, the role of a President is not heavy enough? Ray

Armas’ Rtn. Paolo and IPP Ner’ son Carlo are ala Rtn. Manoj is

seldom seen in our Rotary Meeting. Baby Rtn. Ping is in the

Pangkat of POgie and also in the Pangkat of Ray Armas.

Continuation 1.

The other ideas being injected to improve our Tinig may not be

needed. Even if there are other clubs who may accidentally read

this column, try to get the induction issues of all clubs within our

zone and compare it or all to any weekly issue of the Tinig? The

well balanced contents? The Tid Bits of PP Peter is better than our joke session, our

otherwise. And, informative too that you can recycle in any events.

Even in a prayer meeting if used properly.

Before we embark on membership drive, may there be a review of

those who are not willing to stay with us anymore? May we try to

keep as many or all of them but try to get at least once a month

meeting attendance? It would be very embarrassing if in a

gathering two will claim as members of our club, and, they don’t

know each other.

Seriously, instead of a Rotary Quarter of a Pangkat handling this

column, we may make the President’s Corner and this one merged

and the surviving President’s column would be a better one.

Director Nick and PP Vic were displaying our T-shirt uniform and

it looked really nice. It looked expensive on them kasi magaling

magdala, walang bilbil.

We would recognize PP Toti for having two meetings in a row.

PP Lito is somewhere around always but not with us. PP Rene is

most of the time out kasi.

PRESIDENTIAL MESSAGE

John F. Germ

President 2016-17

August 2016

Forty years ago, a man named George

Campbell, the owner of the company I

worked for, invited me to join Rotary. Back

then, that was a common practice in the United States. Your boss

invited you to join Rotary because he thought it would be good for

business and good for the community, and you said yes. It’s not

surprising that our membership surged during that period.

George warned me not to use Rotary as an excuse to slack off at

work. Even so, I always had time to attend lunch meetings and

serve on committees. I never had to worry that taking a long lunch

once a week would hurt my advancement, or what my boss would

think about the occasional Rotary phone call at work.

Today, things are different. Companies are less generous about

time, and not every manager looks favorably on community

service. It’s hard to enjoy a Rotary meeting when you’ve got

emails piling up on your phone. It’s harder than ever to balance

work with Rotary – and the model that gave us so much growth a

few decades ago is part of what’s holding back our growth now.

That’s why the recent Council on Legislation adopted some

innovative measures that allow clubs to vary their meeting times

and expand their pool of prospective members. Clubs have more

flexibility now to respond to the needs of their members and to

clear away as many barriers to membership as they can. But

there’s one barrier to membership that only you can remove, one

thing that every prospective member needs to become a Rotarian:

an invitation to join a Rotary club.

Whenever I tell a group of Rotarians that we need more willing

hands, more caring hearts, and more bright minds to move our

work forward, everyone applauds. But those hands, hearts, and

minds won’t magically appear in our clubs. We have to ask them

to join. And an invitation to Rotary is something that only you can

give. An invitation is a gift. It’s saying to someone, “I think you

have the skills, the talent, and the character to make our

community better, and I want you to join me in doing that.”

I’m the president of Rotary International, but the only club I can

invite someone to join is the Rotary Club of Chattanooga, Tenn. I

can’t make your club or your community stronger. Only you can

do that – by inviting the qualified people you know to join you in

Rotary Serving Humanity.
