I hope everyone is getting the opportunity to enjoy these lovely sunny days. I know the nights are still chilly, but the days are magnificent.

Our last meeting was a great meeting with discussion about the Joker Jackpot that Angelo is running for the Club.

We talked more about the Kalgoorlie Rotary Food Discovery and all agreed that with the changes that are being put in place at this late stage it is not going to be possible for the Club to put on an event that will do us proud. A huge thank you to Cherie for all the work she had done to date. If there is an opportunity for the event to occur next year we have all the

necessary paperwork ready.

At next week's meeting Directors will be giving an overview of their proposed activities for the coming year. The Directors have done significant work to date to prepare the calendar for the coming year. All members have been allocated a committee for the year and are encouraged to support the Director in that area.

On the 18 August a member of the Goldfields Brass Band will be attending the meeting to tell us about their activities. The Band were very successful and winners of the Yamaha National Band Championships, D Grade Brass 2013 & 2014.

Then the following week there will be no meeting on the Monday night, 25 August, as we will be attending the joint meeting with Boulder and Hannans to meet the District Governor the following night. The board will be having a business meeting with DG Brian on Wednesday morning for breakfast.

Please enjoy your week as we Light up Rotary

From President Esther ...

Rotary Club of Kalgoorlie meets at the Tower Hotel on Mondays at 6.00pm for 6.30pm. Visitors welcome!

Rotary Club of Kalgoorlie

Our first meeting after Changeover was a small one, but a good one.

Gavin Gilmore bought along a guest, Ken Popplewell. It was very nice to meet Ken and we hope to see him again.

To add to the fellowship of meetings, we will now be having a Joker Jackpot. Angelo will be selling tickets at each meeting, hopefully it doesn’t go off until we get to the $500! Please remember to bring some loose change.

President Esther presented ‘Light Up Rotary’ theme badges to Directors Gavin, Roger and Ken who were not able to be at Changeover.

President Esther presented each member with the Rotary Down Under book Humanity in Motion. This is a great book about Rotary projects in Australia. Guest speakers will also receive a copy.

Rotary Club of Kalgoorlie helped out at KBULG’s annual planting day last week and member Sue Morley won a voucher from Bunnings, President Esther presented the voucher at the meeting.

The Rotary Club of Kalgoorlie supports one of three Careers Breakfasts held by Goldfields Institute of Technology. Our event will be held on Wednesday 6 August at Graduates Hall and is expected to attract a large number of students.

The Kalgoorlie ParkRun will be celebrating their one year anniversary on 11 October 2014. Kalgoorlie Rotary Club have been asked to have a sausage sizzle between 8am and 10am to feed the hungry runners.

Friends of Rotary is a fantastic opportunity for members of the community to get involved in our club when they don’t have the time to commit as a full member. Members were given guidelines and an application form to peruse.

Kalgoorlie Rotary Food Discovery will, unfortunately, be cancelled for 2014 due to circumstances outside of the Club’s control. Members are still keen for this event to go forward next year and will continue to refine the documents and a plan for 2015.

Club Plan - President Esther asked Directors to go over their sections of the Club Plan with their respective committees to iron out plans for the coming year and report back to next week’s meeting.

Our first Vocational Visit will be at the Kalgoorlie Court House on 20 October 2014 with a 4.30pm start. The other Rotary clubs will be invited to attend.

The Club has received a request for assistance from a local community group. Members were supportive of the request and further details will be available in a future bulletin.

There will be no meeting on 25 August as we will be joining Boulder and Hannans to meet DG Brian on 26 August.

Members were advised that the Board has decided to keep the Club Dues the same for 2014-15.

Fines: - Ross - because he supports the Eagles - Cherie - because Wal supports Geelong - Sue - for winning the Bunnings voucher - Ken - for (apparently) giving Charmaine bronchitis - Angelo - for not wearing a badge - President Esther bought the box and admitted to members that when she made muffins for the last Board meeting, later that day she opened the microwave only to find the butter that was supposed to be in the muffins!

Our best wishes and thoughts to:

Charmaine Maisey who has been unwell

Gloria Moyle’s daughter Rebekah who has been unwell

Danny Vincent’s mother-in-law who is unwell

Cherie Wallace on the passing of her Mum

GARY C.K. HUANG RI PRESIDENT 2014-15

PRESIDENT’S AMBITIOUS 1.3 MILLION MEMBERSHIP GOAL

Gary C.K. Huang never imagined he would become Rotary International's president when he joined in 1976, but now that he is in office, he hopes to increase membership to 1.3 million by the end of his term.

"It's simple. The more members we have, the more people we can help. A stronger membership base will result in stronger communities," says Huang, who on 1 July became Rotary's first Chinese president.

Huang also hopes his presidential theme, Light Up Rotary, will encourage members to brighten Rotary's image to the public, which he believes in return will improve member recruitment and retention.

Huang has a track record of improving membership development in Asia, adding 19 clubs when he was district governor for Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macau. One of the cornerstones of his presidency is encouraging clubs and districts to conduct a Rotary Day. These one-day events, he says, can spotlight a particular cause, and solidify Rotary's image as one of the world's leading service organizations.

"We need to showcase our good work to everyone in the community. Rotary Days need to be fun and all inclusive. Invite your family, friends, and neighbors to participate. My hope is at the end of the day a few non-members will want to join Rotary," he says. "Let's give people the opportunity to experience what it's like to make a difference. Rotary Days can achieve that."

Huang designed a travel schedule that will allow him to visit more than 30 Rotary Day events across the globe, including Argentina, Chile, France, India, Italy, Korea, Malaysia, Philippines, and the U.S., as well as his home city of Taipei.

Huang says he's honored and humbled to be Rotary's president. He knows he's part of an exclusive club.

"We [past Rotary presidents] have achieved great success in our businesses and in our communities," says Huang. "But success isn't about power or money. It's about giving back. Being a Rotarian has given me the opportunity to help those in need. As president, I can inspire our members to take advantage of the same opportunity and bring happiness in people's lives."

FUNDING GAPS

Huang says Rotary members are never short on ideas and innovative ways to solve problems, but funding gaps prevent many of these projects from taking off.

For instance, Rotary members in Korea, Japan, and China are strong fundraisers, but struggle to help each other use the funds because of distance and language barriers, Huang says.

"I want to show Rotarians why I am their president," he adds. "The best way to do that is to see and inspire their work, participate in their projects, and help them raise funds."

"I want to, along with my district governors, reach out and try to link different clubs from different countries together so we can find the right communities in need," he adds. "That's one of the great things about being an international organization: the ability to bring different cultures and backgrounds together to find a common cause."
