Page 1 Happy New Year- I hope that all of you had a pleasant opportunity to welcome in 2011. We did not wait up for the moment, and the smoke and noise from the “fireworks” were not too bad where we live. I’m not sure from where the alleged cultural need for the fireworks comes, but sometimes it sounds something like a war going on. Regardless, I am looking forward to another reward- ing year as a member of Metro. As you will agree, we have an excellent group in our Board of Directors, and as chairs of our various committees, and I continue to appreciate their energy and focus on our behalf. A first order of business this year is to elect our officers for Dr. Bob Peterson’s year as our president. Past-president Bob Stott has done a fine job as chair of the nominat- ing committee, and the slate will be presented very soon along with the opportunity to make nominations from the floor. I ask for your participation and support for the process. I also ask for your help in bringing new members into Metro. We have made the cases for increasing our membership, and have a new trifold, and New Member Ori- entation pamphlet, copies of both which I hope you carry in your briefcases to use to encourage others to join us. We have some really meaningful good works going on in Metro, and I encourage you to engage on as many as possible. You are making a difference. Mahalo. The Fundraiser 2011 is off to a great start! By Kathleen Rhoads Merriam We had a terrific Fundraising Committee meeting on December 20th at J.J. Dolans and many plans are getting underway! The most important decision made is to have the event at the brand new Waikiki hotel, The Edi-tion on April 24th 2011. At the meeting we discussed issues like the theme, ticket prices, costs to consider, entertainment, and the silent auction. One of the objectives is to get the broader community to attend our event so advertising and selling tickets to the general public will be a priority. We look forward to your in-volvement and we will keep you posted. Mahalo for your continued support of all of our annual fundraisers. Our fundraisers will make it possible to conduct great service projects in the new Rotary year.

Do you believe in Angels? By Kathleen Rhoads Merriam

I do. This was the best Christmas I have ever seen for our Oahu Clubhouses which are day programs for men and women with severe and persistent mental illnesses thanks to the Rotary Club of Metropolitan Honolulu. “Are your programs okay for Christmas” Richard Emery asked one day at Rotary. I frankly and humbly shared that we barely got through Thanksgiving and I really did not know how we were going to get through Christmas. He quickly asked me to compile the number of meals which would total 235 meals for people in need on this special holiday. I arrived at the Pacific Club on the Wednesday before Christmas and saw Richard’s “Turkey-to-go” project in action. I was so proud to introduce myself as knowing Richard through Rotary. In addition to the five Clubhouses I oversee many more social service agencies and families arrived that now would have a Christ-mas dinner. It was the most amazing day of this holiday season. The smiles, the tears, the hope that was shared between everyone was overwhelming at times. I got two more calls thanks to Rotary! Teddi’s company called and asked if I could use hundreds of calen-dars from Hawaii National Bank. This meant that every Clubhouse member is able to receive a 2011 ap-pointment book for Christmas. The next surprise was from Bob “Bear” Havrilak on his Harley delivering his Christmas bonus check to me. As he handed over $200.00 he said “I know you can make Christmas spe-cial for people that need help.” We were able to purchase Long’s gift certificates for people that would not be getting gifts in Makaha. This is why I believe in angels. Mahalo Rotary for making miracles happen.

Ken's Computer Tip of The Week

This week's tip may not apply to many of you, but if it does, it's a real life-saver. As a long-time user of Adobe Photoshop, most of my graphics projects entail many hours of using the program, sometimes for days at a time. I've noticed that after some period of time, Photoshop will occasionally just quit right after I've loaded up a brush or some similar simple action. Rebooting my computer doesn't seem to make any difference, and it sure upsets my work flow! After discussing the problem several times with Adobe's Technical Support staff, we came up with a fix that works every time. Just before you double-click on the Photoshop icon to start the program, press the Ctrl, Alt, and Shift keys simultaneously. Continue to press them until you get a message shows up, asking you if you want to clear all of Photoshop's Preferences. Agree, and then restart Photoshop. Evidently, long periods of Photoshop use eventually corrupts the Preferences, so Photoshop will automatically rebuild them after this process, and will save your hair (from being pulled out).

4-Way Test

Is it the truth?

Is it fair to all concerned

Will it build goodwill and better friendships?

Will it be beneficial to all concerned?

Amazingly….the answer to many of life’s dilemmas

About Rotary & Metro Rotary

Rotary is a worldwide organization of more than 1.2 million business, pro-fessional, and community leaders. Members of Rotary clubs, known as Ro-tarians, provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations, and help build goodwill and peace in the world.

There are 33,000 Rotary clubs in more than 200 countries and geographi-cal areas. Clubs are nonpolitical, nonreligious, and open to all cultures, races, and creeds. As signified by the motto Service Above Self, Rotary’s main objective is service — in the community, in the workplace, and throughout the world.

In April 1986, many business leaders believed that a breakfast Rotary Club would be popular meeting in downtown Honolulu. With the support of three sponsoring clubs and District Governor Chad Penhallow, our Club was organized and became a Provisional Club on July 1, 1986. The Rotary Club of Metropolitan Honolulu received its Charter on August 25, 1986. Donald R. Dawson, a 20-year member of the Honolulu Club, was elected Metro’s first president.

The Rotary Club of Metropolitan Honolulu began with 70 charter mem-bers. The club grew quickly becoming, and remaining, the second largest club in the Hawaii District 5000. On August 27, 1987, Metro Rotary be-came the first Rotary Club in District 5000 to admit women (Gloria Chang and Roz Cooper) to full membership.

Metro has had three outstanding governors of Rotary District 5000, Rich-ard 'Dick' Fisk (1993 - 1994), Hal Darcey (2001 - 2002) and Roz Cooper (2005-2006). Perhaps our greatest accomplishment is spreading the con-cept of "Service Above Self" to more and more people. We have taken leadership in the organization of three new clubs, the Rotary Club of Honolulu Sunrise, the Rotary Club of Honolulu Sunset and the Rotary Club of Honolulu Pau Hana and one Rotaract Club: Rotaract Club of Downtown Honolulu. Metro Rotarians are generous supporters of the Ro-tary Foundation as Benefactors, Paul Harris Fellows, Bequest Society Members, and, District 5000's Paul Harris Society members.
