President-Elect Training Seminar (PETS)Report by Jim Hansen • Photo submitted by Barbara Kogerman

President-Elect Barbara Kogerman attended PETS training over the weekend of February 20-22, 2015. PETS is a mandatory obligation prior to becoming a Rotary club president. Although the training may not always be entered willingly, every president I know, Mission Viejo or other clubs, has been thoroughly motivated, educated and excited about the role he or she is about to accept.

To be continued...

The Rotary Club of Mission Viejo enjoyed a wonderful speaker during the February 11, 2015 regular meeting. MV Rotarian Mike Getto shared fun facts about each U.S. president.

Mike has read well over 1,000 books on presidents. After some general information, Mike shared one fact or quote from each of the 44 U.S. presidents.

M a y b e e v e n m o r e interesting, Mike joined Rotary in 1958. RCMV is his sixth club as his career has moved him around the world.

An excellent presentation! S e e m o r e a t : h t t p : / /

Margaret’s birthday happened to be February 25, the same day at the meeting. She was very involved in Rotary as a “Rotary Anne” and 100% supportive of G e o r g e C o o p e r ’s R o t a r y activities and membership.

Congratulations Margaret and George!

DOWN THE YEARS No. 100A look at Rotary from the memory of longtime member, PP George Cooper, PHF. Over more than fifty years, George has been a member of four clubs: Syracuse, NY, Rotary/One Chicago, IL. Mount Prospect, IL and currently, Mission Viejo, CA. Each month, George will focus on Rotary’s past from his perspective.

PAST ROTARIAN

I am familiar with the use of Past R.I. President, Past District Governor, Past (Club) President but I have not heard the term Past Rotarian. Maybe it has been used in our Rotary world but I just do not recall hearing it used. Now reading it in this column, to some it may mean a former member who has left Rotary for health reasons, to take care of a spouse, for financially reason, due to a move, or it may mean the inevitable facing all of us...Death.

I would like to report in this column a Past Rotarian of our club who made a big difference not only in our club but in our city, as well.

For example, he started our Annual Mayor’s Prayer Breakfast, helped start our city’s annual Walk Against Drugs, our high school Interact Club, our Veterans’ Memorial, our Memorial Grove for deceased members of our club, and in the 27 years I have been a member of my club I have witnessed this Past Rotarian bring in new member after new member almost once or twice a year. He was a Past President of our club, a Paul Harris fellow and Vietnam Veteran.

One of the reasons he was able to do this is because he served for many years as an elected member of our City Council including being appointed Mayor several times. In serving our community, his contacts became important to our club and the projects listed above.

A few months ago he was found dead at home with a copy of a book he was reading in his hand. It was shocking news to our club members who all remembered his friendly smile and hand shake and he always asked me about my wife (we are both 90 this year). He was president the year before I became president back in 1994-1995; so, I had the privilege of “Roasting him” and the honor of being “Roasted” by him at the end of our journeys as presidents.

So as a Rotarian I am very happy to announce that last month (February 2015) the City of Mission Viejo has honored this Past Rotarian by renaming one of the city’s parks, William S. Craycraft Park for his years of service to our community.

In over half a century in Rotary, this is the first I have heard of a park being named after a fellow Rotarian and it makes me happy for his family and friends.

Of course, Service Above Self is what Rotary is about.
