Rotary Club of Somerton Park Inc. | Chartered 7 April 1988 Club Bulletin Peter O introduced long me friend Ewan Vickery, lawyer and presently consultant with Minter Ellison. Ewan was a Rotary Exchange Student in 1966, and began a very interesng descripon and reflecon on his exchange with a recap of life/society in the mid ‘60s. How different it all was! Ewan described the selecon pro- cess and his less than easy path to finally finding himself aboard the Oronsay for the 21 day trip to USA and the West Nebraska town of Kimball—air travel was more expensive! Kimball is a wheat and cale town on the rail line, but also boasts oil and a bunch of missiles which was the subject of an amusing story about Ewan vising the underground control centre of the installaon. Hav- ing been aboard a nuclear weapons equipped US air- craſt carrier I can vouch the Americans are prey sen- sive about this sort of thing. Ewan gave a very entertaining and imaginave de- scripon of his life in Kimball and at school, the plac- es he visited, his engagement of idioms and language differences, and his appreciaon of his me. He reck- ons that he got the best end of the exchange experi- ence as against those who went to the bigger des- naons in the US. It was striking that he clearly made friendships and enjoyed an experience which have had him re-visit his exchange town around twenty or so mes. Ewan managed to get to University and a brand new law school when he returned, but was Tuesday 26th May 26th May 2015 From the last Board meeng: Project Account Balance $11490 less outstanding cheques Fulham Scouts $300,Flinders Brain Injury Group $750,Romac $500 Allocaons have previously put aside for Bushfire Appeal $2000, School of St Judes $1000,and Royal Flying Doctor Service$500. In the weeks leading to the Board meeng I transferred $1000 to the clubs Fixed Deposit from the Project Ac- count. When the old shed was sold the money was de- posited to the Project account and it has been the belief that we should have an allocaon set aside for when we need to purchase a new shed At the recent Board meeng it was decided to reduce the allocaon for the Bushfire appeal to $1000(pending further info) and in light of the Nepal disaster make a contribuon of $1000 to ShelterBox immediately. In ad- dion at the end of the year we make a contribuon to Australian Rotary Health. This year from our weekly con- tribuons we have received over $500 and we will add to that to make our donaon a total of $1500 Service Account Balance $4913 In addion as President Elect I would sincerely like to thank Bronwyn Lambert for agreeing to join the Club Board next year Treasurers Report

happy to say that his Exchange experience set the background for his later achievement and that it was a turning point in his life.

Ewan has never joined Rotary despite a long as-sociation and rewarding experiences with Rotar-ians. He was asked why and in response made the important point that, as a lawyer, he wished to remain free from associations which might in any way prejudice his freedom to act and impar-tiality in a particular situation.
