Have had a very eventful last couple of weeks! Not only did i finish school....i also gotto walk through and experience an American graduation ceremony as well as attendthe 102nd Rotary International Convention in New Orleans!!New Orleans was an absolutely amazing, once in a lifetime experience. Not only was ihalf-way around the world from Australia at this convention but i also got to preformat the opening plenary session with around 200 other exchange students and also beapart of the flag ceremony, as well as meet with the RI president! Sadly, among all ofthe diverse people i met from all around the globe, i did not manage to bump into anyToorak Rotarians, nor anyone from District 9800.- Samantha Hellessey.

When the smoke settles

There was a time when gunpowder smoke was so thick on battlefields that it was difficult todetermine the victors until the smoke settled. Evaluating the success of this year in Rotary issimilar because we won’t learn the final figures until the year has ended. However, there are someachievements that can be reviewed – before the smoke settles!

The major accomplishment has been the creation of a new culture of innovation, which hasencouraged both Rotarians and RI staff members to review our policies and procedures at alllevels and to determine if they are truly best practices or merely traditional practices. Manychanges toward more modern business methods have resulted, and I am encouraged by ourprogress.

The innovative climate has produced a simplified and streamlined RI Strategic Plan that calls forus to support and strengthen our clubs, focus and increase humanitarian service, and enhancepublic image and awareness. The first two priorities reaffirm our core values, and the thirdpriority recognizes the need for more public awareness and support in our local communitiesaround the world. The plan has measurable goals, and it provides an excellent road map forRotary’s future growth and development.

Other improvements have included the new regional Rotary coordinators, whose job is to helpour district governors to help our clubs to become Bigger, Better, and Bolder. The newPresidential Citation program has provided a score sheet for all of our clubs to test themselvesagainst the other clubs in their districts, and the results will be very helpful to both the current andincoming governors – and to RI as well!

We also have given additional attention to our New Generations programs, particularly Rotaractand Rotary Youth Exchange, and we have focused more emphasis on the Reach Out to Africainitiative. We also have shaped a new approach for the training of incoming district governorsand more meaningful assignments for past district governors.

All in all, we have made some significant improvements. But the most important question iswhether we have paved the way for an even better year next year. Have we done the right thingsto ensure that the best days of Rotary are still ahead? And we won’t know that – until the smokesettles!

Why the Taboo?by Gordon Cheyne

Broadcaster and naturalist Sir David Attenborough hasquestioned the 'strange silence' about population growth in publicdebate, and urged members of environmental organisations todiscuss the subject openly and often.

In a speech to the Royal Society of Arts in London on 10 March, hosted by itspresident, the Duke of Edinburgh, Sir David said there seemed to be some'bizarre taboo' around population. "I meet no one who privately disagrees that population growth is a problem. Noone - except flat-earthers - can deny that the planet is finite," he said. "So whydoes hardly anyone say so publicly?" He went on: "What can each of us do - you and I? Well, there is just one thingthat I would ask. Break the taboo, in private and in public - as best you can, asyou judge right. "Wherever and whenever we speak of the environment - add a few words toensure that the population element is not ignored." A full transcript of Sir David's speech is available at http://www.thersa.org/events/audio-and-past-events/2011/rsa-presidents-lecture-2011

Clarice Says:by Gordon Cheyne

Dear Toorak Rotarians,

Cats meowing, mincing poodles, cut snakes, yup it's just another week inAustralian Parliament. Isn't it great to know that when we run ourmeetings as Rotarians we are so comparatively civil and orderly?

I was told when I got this job, never talk about politics, religion or sex in youreditorials. While I figured I could probably knock over the trifecta with a gag aboutArnold Schwarzenegger or Silvio Berlusconi visiting the local priest for advice, Ithought I'd dedicate this decidedly edgy editorial to our political servants in Canberra.

I was once told politics is like the choice between Coke and Pepsi - we all have ourpreferences but quite often the problem is that you don't get a choice as to whether youwant to drink cola or not. But then what can we do? Avoid discussion of politicsaltogether? Surely anyone who says they are not interested in politics is a bit like adrowning person who insists they are not interested in water.

Yes, as Australians we have many choices ahead of us. Carbon tax or no carbon tax?Mining tax or no mining tax? Tony in budgie smugglers or board shorts? Tim to ask

Julia the question or, in keeping with leap year tradition, Julia to ask Tim in 2012? Ormaybe we could have a referendum to decide, or at the very least a Herald Sun poll?Maybe we could even text 1800 Will You Marry Me to vote and get Kyle Sandilands togive his opinion?

But maybe there's some merit in thinking along these lines. Wouldn't it be great if wecould vote via text message for Government elections each week like Dancing With TheStars? I can just see it now, voting off a politician every episode til there was noneleft...

...ahhh we can dream.

But really, couldn't we just have Rotary run the place instead? I'm sure things wouldbe made a lot more efficient, for example the lengthy "Commonwealth of Australia"would be the first thing to be shortened, with "CoA" replacing our nation's name inmaintenance of our great Rotarian tradition of using as many acronyms as possible(GRToUaMAaP).

So What else would a country run by Rotary look like? I'm interested in yoursuggestions!

May your politics be good, clean politics!
