The resort included three golf courses and was established in the 18 th century. During the Civil War it was used as a war hospital. Of most interest to Michael was the massive on-site bunker built at the height of the Cold War. It was maintained in “ready to run” state, fully stocked/replenished with food, hospital and pharmacy supplies, generators, fresh water, fuel etc and was big enough to house 1100 US politicians to enable them to continue to govern in the advent of nuclear attack. This week’s guest speaker was Nicole Hardwick. Nicole is an Essendon resident. She is a pharmacist with her business in Glenroy. She is a wife, mother of four boys and volunteer for Look good feel better: a programme that runs in 24 countries that is aimed at making cancer therapy patients look and feel better about themselves. Nicole has been volunteering for over three years facilitating Look good feel better work shops mostly at John Fawkner hospital and sometimes at Sunshine and Footscray. These work shops run for 2.5 hours to teach patients ways to use make-up, wigs etc to help mask the side effects of their treatments.

Volume 79, Tuesday 19 November 2013

There are three key activities organised for the remainder of this month: Bill Early

Trophy (see details below), Graffiti Removal (Sunday 24/11 9am – 11am Russell

Street, Essendon) and Bare Foot Bowls (see details below). A lot of time and effort

has gone into planning these activities. EVERY member is requested to show your

support to the Club by attending at least one of these. All of them are also open to

friends and family. Thank you.

Today’s Meeting A lovely day to be on the banks of the Marybyrnong.

Following on from last week’s travel story from Neil Henderson we had Michael Pepi

telling us this week about his and Judy’s recent cruise from Canada to New York city which was then capped off by some time in Washington DC and then a few days in a

wonderful old resort in West Virginia known as Greenbrier Resort. The resort included

three golf courses and was established in the 18th century. During the Civil War it was

used as a war hospital. Of most interest to Michael was the massive on-site bunker

built at the height of the Cold War. It was maintained in “ready to run” state, fully stocked/replenished with food, hospital and pharmacy supplies, generators, fresh

water, fuel etc and was big enough to house 1100 US politicians to enable them to

continue to govern in the advent of nuclear attack.

This week’s guest speaker was Nicole Hardwick. Nicole is an Essendon resident. She is a pharmacist with her business in Glenroy. She is a wife, mother of four boys and

volunteer for Look good feel better: a programme that runs in 24 countries that is

aimed at making cancer therapy patients look and feel better about themselves.

Nicole has been volunteering for over three years facilitating Look good feel better

work shops mostly at John Fawkner hospital and sometimes at Sunshine and Footscray.

These work shops run for 2.5 hours to teach patients ways to use make-up, wigs etc to

help mask the side effects of their treatments.

Bylaws: By now you should have correspondence from Secretary Rob advising that we

will be voting on changes to our By-Laws put forward by the Rotary International

Council of Legislation. The vote will take place Tuesday 3/12/13. There are many

procedural amendments. Examples of the changes: “New Generations” will now be

known as “Youth” and district assembly is now district training assembly. More material

changes are that the formal grievance procedures have been reworked and the

concept of an optional satellite club has been introduced (preliminary discussion at

Board suggests we have no immediate interest in this concept). Read Rob’s email for

a full list of changes if you are interested. And, Yes we really do need to vote the

changes – but thankfully en masse, not individually. Your cooperation appreciated.

Look good feel better is volunteer driven with the support of the Cosmetics industry

who donate 100,000 units of product valued at $2.5m p.a. It is structured as being a

free, non-medical, non-commercial and brand neutral programme. Participants

improve self esteem, self image and confidence and feel a greater sense of control

over their treatment side effects. All of which in turn can be a driver to better

treatment outcomes.

Submission from Jean Abbey:

Age is a quality of mind

If you have left your dreams

behind: if hope is cold

If you no longer look ahead

If your ambitions fires are dead

Then you are old

But if in life you seek the best

And if in life you keep your zest

If love you hold

Then no matter how the years roll by

No matter how the birthdays fly

You are not old - Dr Latner, Buffalo, Canada 1967
