Dear fellow Rotarians,

I was introduced to Rotary as a high school student. Right away, I saw it was something I wanted to be a part of. Rotary was a prestigious organization in Taiwan when I was growing up, and at first, I mostly wanted the status of being a Rotarian. But it didn't take long for me to realize that Rotary was about much more than having lunch with important people. Through Rotary, I have made my community and the world a better place. I have been touched by the stories of those we've helped in countries far from my own. Rotary is something special and it is something I am proud to be a part of—not for what it gives me, but for what it lets me give to others. By putting Service Above Self, we set an example that cannot help but inspire those around us. My motto is always "be positive, be active, be a friend," and Rotary embodies these values. In Rotary we set high goals, we work hard, and we care. In Rotary we find solutions, not excuses. Rotary is a light in our communities and a light in our hearts. It creates hope in our world and gives meaning to our lives. It fulfills a basic human desire to reach out a hand to others, to know we have made a difference. I send my best wishes for a successful year to come, and I look forward to working together as

we Light Up Rotary.

Dear Fellow Rotarians, Rotary Anns, Members of Inner Wheel and Rotary Friends

With Rotary International's theme Light up Rotary and our District theme, Make a Difference - when put together, we will Make a Difference and Light up Rotary.As Rotary International and President Gary Haung's goal is to increase our membership to at least 1.3million by June 2015, we need to be positive, innovative and prepared to make changes. By achieving this goal, we will build Rotary to an even bigger organisation that can and will withstand the test of times. As each and every Rotarian is a leader, we should take responsibility to promote Rotary. As joint leaders we need to exchange ideas and take action. Be innovative, work together and subsequently we, as a team will Make a Difference.We also need to realise that the Youth is our future and we need to take care of them. Sponsor an Interact Club and get the parents involved. They may just be potential members! Furthermore engage Rotaract members in projects and invite them into Rotary. Rotary's future depends on members and the ability to meet the needs of so many underprivileged people.It is a great honour for me to serve as D9400's Governor together with my District Governor Ann Elaine Stathacopoulos and we both look forward to our year as we Light up Rotary.Our aim in this Rotary year is to be the best on all levels in district. We will achieve this only if we put our efforts together, set our differences aside and respect each other.

Let us live the Object of Rotary and the Fourway Test.Let us Make a Difference and Light Up Rotary!

As we enter the 5th year of District 9400 I am proud and honored to take up the office of District Governor Ann at the request of District Governor Annie Steijn.I joined the Benoni Rotary Anns in 1991 and have been an active Ann in the club serving as President, Secretary and Treasurer several times. I was AGA to DGA Sue Barrable (1997-1998) and to DGA Jill Pope (2000-2001). In 2003 – 2004 I served as District Governor Ann together with DG Greg. This was the most memorable year in Rotary serving the district together with my life partner and best friend. Subsequently I served as DGAR to DGA Christine Forsyth-Thompson (2012-2013) and DGA Val Balt (2013-2014).I have attended three International Conventions, in Singapore, Los Angeles and Thailand and have experienced two Rotary Friendship exchanges.I am actively involved in the Hellenic Community of Benoni. I served as Chairlady for 4 years and secretary.I met Greg in 1971 and we were married in 1973. We have three married children, Kelly, Jonathan and Arthur and three adorable grandchildren, Nicola, Michael and Liah. I look forward to meeting you all during the DGA visits. During the year we will embrace RI President Gary Huang's theme, “Light up Rotary” working together as a team to the benefit of the communities we serve. The emphasis of our year will be on the youth. The disadvantaged youth are the most vulnerable, with few role models and have difficulty studying in poor living conditions. We can help by providing safe Solar Lights to improve the study conditions in their homes. It is through education that the disadvantaged youth will break their cycle of poverty.Rotary Anns and members of Inner Wheel together we may “Light up Rotary”.

1. The Club Secretary should receive the Semi-Annual Dues Package from RI in July 2014 and

January 2015. These documents are now also sent by e-mail to the registered officers of

each club.

a. Payment of the Semi-Annual dues - 1 July & 1 January

To ensure that the FA can complete the data accurately & report to TRF timeously it is very important

that you:

a. Complete the reference section of the ABSA deposit slip by entering the club's name or number

and purpose of the payment

b. e-mail it to: [email protected].

It will contain the following:

a. Semi-Annual Dues Invoice-Estimate - Generated by RI database based on number of members

in database on 31 May & 30 November

b. Semi-Annual Report Work sheet

c. Membership list as per database

d. New Members Form

e. Occupational Codes and Language List

I. US$27-00 per member becomes payable on 1 July 2014 and must be paid by 31 December 2014

II. US$1-00 per member Council on Legislation levy becomes payable 1 July 2014 only

c. Updating the club's membership online at the Rotary Web via Member Access will NOT

adjust your club's semi-annual dues account. You MUST confirm the membership count and

also the number of subscriptions to The Rotarian to any of the addresses given above. With this

nformation, RI will be able to adjust your club's semi-annual dues account accordingly.

d. Semi-Annual Reports submitted more than one year after the due date (1 July or 1

ClubRunner offers you to wealth of information about our District and Rotary for both Rotarians and the general public. Some examples are:District organizational chart.Club Directory and Contacts.When/Where Clubs Meet.Directory of Clubs.Calendar of Events.And much more information.

To access the Club Runner system you need to follow the following guidelines:

- locate Login under the Welcome page or on the extreme right hand page corner of the screen.

- On the next page that opens, you will be prompted to enter your login information.

For first time users, click on New and Existing users – Retrieve your password.

- You will see a welcome message on the Launchpad page.

- Once logged-in, view what your access rights allow you to do.

- Then update your profile and reflect all required info.

- All other areas you are not expected to access will be blanked out.

Club secretaries and presidents have most rights including integration of club with RI.

Club secretaries and Presidents are encouraged to use Club Runner to reflect your club's 3 year strategic

leadership plan of officers so that when the deadline of 31 December comes for new incoming officers to

be sent to RI through the integration, your club information is automatically reflected at RI.

All club updates like new member RI numbers and termination take about a week to be formally reflected

in Club Runner.

The Humanitarian Distribution Centre of Southern Africa is a hub that serves D9400 and neighbouring

districts/countries with many humanity related project items. Books and many other items, such as

desks, computers etc come mainly from Texas. Periodically, we receive wheelchairs and toys from

other countries. However, we could receive anything in the containers! News of the items will be

notified to members via Snippets or Clubrunner.

Collection criteria

There are many different organizations/associations that collect items from the HDC. In order to keep

a register of the collections and to ensure that the items are not sold for financial gain, there are

certain collection criteria that have been designed.

- Please send a letter to the association/school/church etc that needs to collect books/items from

the centre.

- You need to advise the collectors that a letter on their letterhead also needs to be taken to the

centre and this letter needs to confirm that a representative is there to collect book/items on

the Association's behalf.

- They need to complete a form at the HDC (and they will need their ID number) confirming what

they have taken.

The completed forms will be collated and the information will be put onto a graph by Rtn Ken Kay

(Randburg). The monthly report is sent to the stakeholders and the Second Wind Foundation (Texas)

that sends us the containers.

The centre does not include insurance cover for the transporting of goods, postage and/or funds to

deliver containers. This must be organized by the Rotary club and/or the recipient of

goods/container/items.

Operating times for the collection of books, wheelchairs and other items:

The HDC is manned by volunteers who are dedicated to assist all visitors to the centre. The operating

hours for book and other item collections are:

- Open every week (except from mid-December to mid-January) throughout the year on

Tuesdays till Friday.

- Times: 09:30 – 15:00

- First Saturday of every month: 09:30 – 12:00

From either North or South proceed along N3 Highway to Van Buuren Road off-ramp, and turn left or right as appropriate

into Van Buuren Road. After approximately 1km turn left into Nicol Road. After 113m turn right into Skeen Boulevard. After

446m turn left into Van Vuuren Road ( at Bedfordview Clinic ) The New Centre is at the end of Van Vuuren Road. Alternatively

come off the N12 when travelling westwards into the Slip Road into Eastgate. Take the first left into Arbroath and left into

Nicol at the traffic lights.

Linen, slippers, toiletries - collection time

For the collection of linen, slippers, toiletries and other items received from the various hotel groups

from time to time, the collection details are below:

- Thursday every week

After collection criteria

Once the items have been collected, the Rotary club should try and attend the 'handover' venue where the items will be used or distributed from. In doing so, please take some photos and send them to PDG Shirley Downie ([email protected]). If you are not able to attend the event, please ask the recipient to send you photos of the items being used or handed out together with a 'thank you' letter addressed to your club or the HDCSA management. Photos should be of the people actually receiving the item. Also, scholars using the books in a library etc.

Criteria for allocated containersThe project partners need to have full details of where the container is going to and what it will be used for. Full details will be requested on a specific form which needs to be completed and submitted to


Once a container has been allocated, the following needs to be addressed:- The container needs to be collected from the HDC within four weeks of the receiving club being

notified.- The cost for the collection and relocation of the container is for the club's account.- Any conversions to the containers will need to be undertaken by the club and/or recipient.- The container cannot be used for storage purposes. Preferably, it should be used for a project

that falls in line with the RI focus groups.- Take photos of the container when it arrives at the intended venue; continue to take photos

during reconstruction and when the conversion is completed and the handover is done.

- Send the photos and a short report to the HDC management.

- Another report will be requested about six months after the complete conversion date.

To advertise your event in Snippets, your advertisement and

Clubs are reminded that in terms of the MOP, unsolicited advertising of events and

functions to other clubs is not allowed.

If a club wishes to advertise an event to all the clubs in the district, the

approval of the PR/Comms Committee should first be obtained.

If a club wishes to advertise an event to neighbouring clubs, the President

should first seek approvall from the Presidents of the neighbouring clubs.

If a club wishes to advertise generally within another district, the approval of

the DG should first be obtained who would in turn request approval from the

DG of the other district.

Electronic Communication

Throughout the Rotary year, a number of very important announcements are made. Please

ensure that you attend to these once you receive them as deadlines and timelines need to

be met.

There are a number of events during 2014/2015 and these will be announced electronically

and in the DG's newsletter and Snippets. Also check the website for information.

Ensure that the officers for the 2014/2015 Rotary year are advised to Rl Switzerland not later

than 15 December 2014. If you omit to do this then the Club Presidents and Secretories

details will be shown as those of this Rotary year!

The Rotary Ann Prayer

Lord, make us a channel of your peace; that where there is hatred,

we may bring love, that where there is wrong, we may bring the

Spirit of forgiveness, that where there is discord, we may bring

harmony, that where there is despair, we may bring hope, that

where there are shadows, we may bring light, that where there is

sadness, we may bring joy. Lord, grant that we may seek, rather to

comfort, than to be comforted, to understand, than to be

understood. To love, than to be loved. For it is by giving that one

receives.

Amen.

Keep us O Lord, from pettiness; Let us be large in thought, in word

and deed. Let us be done with fault finding and leave off self

seeking. May we put away all pretence and meet each other Face

to face, with out self pity and without prejudice. May we never be

hasty in judging and always generous. Let us take time for all

things. Make us grow calm, serene, and gentle. Teach us to put into

action our better impulses straight-forward and unafraid. Grant

that we may realise that it is the little things that create the

differences, but in the big things of life we are at one. And may we

strive to touch and to know the great human heart common to us

all and, O Lord God, Let us not forget to be kind.
