Pittsburgh Rotary Recruits

25 New Members

Pittsburgh Rotary, under the leadership of Club president Robin Zoufalik, has recruited 25 new members since July 2016. At the beginning of his presidency, Robin challenged Pittsburgh Rotary to be a vibrant club. He set aggressive goals at the beginning of his presidency and followed up with an organized plan to accomplish his membership goals.

Pittsburgh Rotary members responded to the challenge. Ethan Nicholas and Kelli Robbins led the charge. Excitement seemed to increase weekly. The membership efforts were capped in June when, in one meeting, Past President Karl Ohrman introduced in one meeting three new members he had recruited.

The 25 new members have a variety of backgrounds including a business consultant, financial advisor, high tech sales, etc. Incoming Club President Mike Smith, president of Goodwill of Southwestern PA, pledged to continue Robin’s aggressive membership campaign. Pittsburgh Rotary is on a roll. Look out District 7300!

Membership Minute:

How’s That Working Out For You? Karl Ohrman

You are a good, average Rotarian. You attend most meetings. You volunteer for several projectseach year. You send $100 to the RI Foundation every year. You go to most District Conferences.

You have a mild interest in membership, but if you're like 90% of all Rotarians, you have never asked anyone to join the spectacular organization called Rotary International. You seem to think that other club members will work on the membership thing. You're too busy.

As a result of this membership disinterest, your club's membership is continuing to slide downward. Yon have fewer members paying dues, participating in club projects and adding camaraderie at club events. Something needs to be done ... and fast.

Attitude is everything. Your attitude can change. This year's RI President, like others before him, consider membership recruitment and retention a main priority. You are responsible for your club’s success. Not the club’s membership chair, not the club president, not the rookie member, but you, individually. The future of Rotary is in your hands.

Rotary is good people doing good things. Share the excitement. If you accept this responsibility and recruit a few good new members, when asked, "How's that membership thing working out for you?" you can answer with gusto, "Just Great."

Karl Ohrman is a Past President of the Rotary Club of Pittsburgh. He has served as Assistant District Governorunder a number of past District Governors and is a regular contributor to this newsletter, as well as serving on its editorial board. Karl is open to speaking to all Rotary clubs in the District about the excitement of Rotary.

SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITY CONTINUES

Rotarian Friends:

You may recall last December when the Pittsburgh Rotary Club Foundation partnered with the German American Chamber of Commerce in Pittsburgh to award a $2,500.00 scholarship to a student from Washington & Jefferson College. http://www.gaccpit.com/en/media/newsdetail/artikel/healy-selected-to-receive-2500-german-american-chamberrotary-scholarship/?cHash=d2b7fac7abe94dfd116987f34ded6065.

That student-winner, Angela Nied, has been notified that she’s been named a Fulbright Fellowship Scholar with further details below. We’re waiting on a more formal announcement.

The Chamber is continuing the scholarship for 2017 and the updated application form is available for download at this link: https://www.gaccpit.com/fileadmin/ahk_pittsburgh/PDF/GABC-Rotary-Scholarship-Overview-2017.pdf.

Polio is almost extinguished

But the war in Syria has caused a resurgence

AN EDITORIAL FROM THE WASHINGTON POST, 12:00 AM, 27 JUNE 2017

Wonderful as it is to recall the glories of the manned space program — the exhilaration and sense of infinite possibilities for humanity — there were also setbacks, disasters and disappointments. Something similar is happening now with polio and the world’s longest and most ambitious quest to eradicate the poliovirus, which is highly contagious, largely strikes children under 5 and can cause permanent paralysis.

Thanks to vaccination, the eradication effort is closer to success today than at any time in 30 years. Yet all of a sudden, a new outbreak has appeared in Syria. Is the goal about to be lost?

Not exactly, but the mixture of optimism and worry is warranted. As recently as the mid-1980s, polio paralyzed more than 350,000 children a year in 125countries where it was endemic. As Microsoft founder and philanthropist Bill Gates pointed out recently, that’s 40 cases an hour.

By contrast, so far this year, the last three endemic countries have reported a total of only six cases of wild poliovirus, fewer than at any moment ever: four in Afghanistan and two in Pakistan, and none so far this year in Nigeria. This is an extraordinary accomplishment by people, biomedicine and philanthropy. Just a few years ago, Pakistan, for example, appeared to be spinning out of control, with vaccination workers murdered on the job and whole sectors beyond reach of immunization. Globally, some 16 million people are walking today who might otherwise have been afflicted with paralysis from polio, Mr. Gates noted.

The numbers of polio victims are so low today that eradication may indeed be within reach, if there is not another setback in the remaining endemic countries. For this, immunization and surveillance must be sustained.

On June12, philanthropists and governments once again backed the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, a public-private partnership aimed at the second-ever eradication of a disease, after smallpox. At the Rotary International convention in Atlanta, $1.2 billion was pledged. Up to $150 million raised in the next three years by Rotary International, which has been at the forefront of the battle since 1985, will be matched 2-to-1 by the Gates Foundation, which pledged a total of $450million, including the match. The remaining will come from other donors, all to make sure there is no relapse and a final fight to the finish.

The one dark spot is Syria, where a fresh outbreak has paralyzed 17 children, most from Mayadin, in eastern Syria, and including one child from Raqqa, where the Islamic State is headquartered. This is the second polio outbreak of the war. It was caused by a weakened form of the virus from the polio vaccine itself, which in rare cases mutates and becomes virulent against the unvaccinated, spreading through contaminated sewage or water.

The real culprit is the upheaval of war. Fortunately, there is an effective vaccine and a fair amount of experience in extinguishing such a polio outbreak, and with enough effort and immunization, it can be contained.

ROTARY BOOTS ON THE GROUND--in SYRIA--Collateral Repair Project (Global Grant)

Several Rotary clubs in Rotary District 7300 participated in a successful Global Grant that made it possible for many Syrian refugee school-age children, in Jordan, to continue their educations. The Global Grant amount totalled, ultimately, just under $200,000 and provides all sorts of student support, school fees, supplies, and, shown above, some materials you might not immediately associate with schooling. (Carpets!) Al Wells, of the Rotary Club of Pittsburgh, headed up the project, with help from several other clubs, including his own home club, the Rotary Club of Pittsburgh. One of the partners in the project is the Non-Governmental Organization COLLATERAL REPAIR PROJECT.

Rotary Changes YOUR LifeThe Bob Dove Story, by Karl Ohrman

When we talk about how “Rotary Changes Lives,” our focus typically is on how it changes the lives of others, often in faraway places. Truth is, Rotary also changes the lives of the Rotarians serving others.

Bob Dove, a member of the Forest Hills Rotary Club, personifies how Rotary service can change the one doing the serving. He is about to leave the comforts of Pittsburgh to go to Rwanda for a year to work with the kids at Urukundo Village beginning this fall. He was following the example of fellow Rotarian, Tom Nunnally, when Bob wentto Rwanda to work with Arlene Brown at Urukundo Village for the first time in May of 2016. That trip changed his life and the life of his wife, Amy so much that they decided to return for a year.

During that first trip, Bob set up a computer lab with the 10 laptops donated by the Forest Hills Rotary Club. He also got the computer lab certified to offer an international computer skills certification programknown as the ICDL. The ICDL Foundation has theirAfrica Headquarters nearby, in Kigali, and they wantBob to work with them while in country. He will bein Rwanda because of the work that Forest Hills RotaryClub did there. Now his main client will be payinghim to help them while he serves the kids. Soundslike a cushy job. Anyone want to join him?

12

Page 13: Rotary District 7300 ALL STARS SHINING THE LIGHT · PDF filePDG BILL SEGAR'S MEMBERSHIP AWARD! 1. ... Cooper-Siegel Library, ... You may recall last December when the Pittsburgh Rotary

Bob grew up in Plum and graduated Plum High School in 1964. He obtained a BA in English and History from Pitt in 1968 and got an MA in Journalism from Penn State after completing a tour of duty as an MP in Korea during the Vietnam War. His Army service was from 1969-1971. He returned to Pitt part-time while working as an academic dean and he received his PhD in Education in 1982.

Bob is married to Amy. They have two children: a son who is married, lives in Millvale and works at CMU; and a daughter who lives and teaches in New Zealand.

Bob is the owner of WD&E Consulting LLC. They do workforce development and education consulting. His most current work is with the International Computer Driving License (ICDL) Foundation out of Ireland.

Yes, Bob has hobbies but they tend to be service oriented. He serves on the Board of Directors for the Three Rivers Walk to Emmaus. He’s a member of Session for the Waverly Presbyterian Church in Regent Square and is a member of the Citizens’ Advisory Committee for the Pennsylvania Board of Probation and Parole.

13

Page 14: Rotary District 7300 ALL STARS SHINING THE LIGHT · PDF filePDG BILL SEGAR'S MEMBERSHIP AWARD! 1. ... Cooper-Siegel Library, ... You may recall last December when the Pittsburgh Rotary

Bob is a longtime Rotarian having joined the Pittsburgh Club in the 1980’s when he worked downtown; his second club was the Forest Hills Club where he joined ten years ago. Bob served as Forest Hills president twice (2008-2009 and 2013-2014) and was Assistant District Governor in 2016-2017. Bob also is generous with his Paul Harris contributions to the RI Foundation.

Bob’s favorite Rotary project is the water project with Urukundo Village and additional support for the kids at Urukundo in Rwanda. Bob worked closely with recently deceased Rotarian, Tom Nunnally, who was well known for his international efforts in clean water projects. He is spearheading an effort to purchase two school buses for the school at Urukundo Village where 550 children currently have a commute over dangerous roads. If your club would like to participate in this global grant with the Forest Hills Club, please contact Bob at 412-657-7984.

Secret fact about Bob? He lived in a commune while attending Penn State.
