The Rotary Foundation Polio EradicationThe Rotary Foundation's universally best known program is Polio Plus ― the eradication of Polio ― which began in 1985 and is now hopefully in the final stages.

Not so long ago, the world was paralysed by the fear of polio. More than 125 countries were polio-endemic and thousands of families watched in anguish as the disease killed or crippled 1000 people a day, most of them children.

For 30 years now, Rotary and it’s partners such as the World Health Organisation, UNICEF and the US Centres for Disease Control, have worked tirelessly to rid the world of polio. So far Rotarians have raised over US$1.3 billion to help fund this program.

Since 1985, more than two billion children have received the polio vaccine, and five million children destined to be polio victims are walking today because of global immunisation. Reported cases have dropped 99.8% and only two countries Afghanistan and Pakistan remain endemic.

The Final ChallengeIn 2011, India, which had been one of the most endemic countries, went one full year without a single case and has now been removed from the endemic countries list. This year Africa, the continent, has now also achieved one year polio free, and as of 25th September 2015, Nigeria has been removed from the endemic nations list by the World Health Organisation. However the virus knows no borders and can quickly spread from endemic countries into polio-free countries.

Polio Cases

The greatest battle now is financial. The World Vaccine Summit in Geneva, estimated that Polio can be eradicated within the next 3 years and that the cost will be US$5.5 billion. Fortunately, world governments and other agencies have committed $4.4 billion leaving a short fall of $1.5 billion which Is another fund raising challenge for Rotary in conjunction with the Gates Foundation. Rotary has now sent out the call for Rotarians to raise $35 million per annum which will be matched by the Gates Foundation 2:1.

In 2012 the Abbott government pledged $100 million over a four year period to Rotary’s Polio Eradication Program. As of now $20 million has been received, however, due to budget cuts, the $80 million left has been reduced to $72 million and we are hoping that there will be no further cuts to the pledge.

We are very pleased to have as our guest speaker the 2016-17 President of Rotary International, John Germ.

John is Chairman of the Board of Campbell & Associates, Inc., Consulting Engineers. He joined the firm as an engineer in 1965 after four years in the US Air Force. In Chattanooga, he has been active as the president of the Chamber of Commerce, Boy Scouts, Junior Achievement and campaign chairman of the United Way.

John joined Rotary in 1976 and has served R.I. as district governor, committee member, delegate to and Chairman of the Council on Legislation, task force zone and area coordinator, Aide to 2007-08 RI President, Chairman of the nominating committee 2011-12, 2012-13 & 2014-15, International Assembly Training Leader (two years), Vice Chair of TRF Stewardship Committee, Chairman of TRF Investment Committee and TRF Finance Committee, Vice Chairman of the Bangkok Convention Committee, Chairman of Rotary's U.S.$200 Million Challenge Committee from 1 December 2007 thru 30 June 2012, as well as 2014 Chairman for IPPC and an advisor to the RI Communications Committee.

He has received RI.'s Service Above Self Award and The Rotary Foundation's Citation for Meritorious Service and Distinguished Service Award. He and his wife, Judy, are Benefactors and members of the Arch Klumph Society of the Rotary Foundation. They have four children and six grandchildren.
