PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE:

Well fellows what a great night of Rotary fellowship last Thursday evening with the Rotary Club of Mackay North and of course to top the night off, Mackay West won the Bowls. I noticed after checking the score card, I could understand why they wanted to bring the Drug Testing Committee in as John Palmer and his team won 22-1, well done boys. Looks like some of your practice has paid off John. ( Good being retired isn't it. ) Remember fellows the 7th June will be mixed night and the guest Speaker will be Della Whearty from the TV series MKR. Hopefully her Dad Gerry Muscat who was a member of our club some time ago will also join her for the evening. I'm quite looking forward to hearing her story as I'm sure there are things going on behind the kitchens that you would not normally hear about. I'm also hoping a number of the ladies can join us on the night. Fellows Director George has put his hand up to do another lunch time cook up on the 8th June and will be looking for a couple of helpers , if you are available please have a chat with George. You never know George, Della might be able to come and give you a bit of assis-tance. Sunday 4th June is on it way Fellows and we will be look-ing for numbers to help at the Marina Run once again and will require as many hands as possible to run this event and of course it is for a worthy course " The Lu. Expressions of Interest Close This Friday

Australian Rotary Health is calling for Expressions of Interest (EOI)

for its Mental Health Research Grants. Projects must focus on the

mental health of young Australians (aged 0 – 25 years) and be

conducted within Australia at a recognized university, hospital or

research institute.

Research grants are valued at up to $70,000 per annum + GST

for 1, 2, or 3 years, and are available to Australian citizens, Aus-

tralian permanent residents, and New Zealand citizens.

EOIs close Friday May 26. Short-listed candidates will be notified in

June to submit a full application.

Rotary International President Elect Ian Riseley

gets behind the Muster.

"These 12 Drives around Australia will bring Community Mental Health Forums to regional and remote areas and

reach out to young Australians.

By engaging with Australian Rotary Health you are acknowledging the vision

of Ian Scott and its many supporters of ARH to be a catalyst for improving

the quality of life of people who are less able to help themselves.

I encourage you to support the Muster for Mental Health."

Introducing our Muster Guides, Heather and Ian Yarker!

These two have quite a passion for Rotary Service and helping others.

They have also been strong supporters of Australian Rotary Health.

Heather and Ian look forward to meeting you when you join the Muster!

Your challenge, if you choose to accept it, is to get on board and help us raise $2 million dollars for our Ian

Scott Challenge!

All donations will go towards youth mental health and suicide prevention research.

All you have to do is make an every day hero account and share the link with your friends!

Improving Patient Outcomes for One of the

Deadliest Cancers

While we have seen some decline in the mortality rates for other cancers over the years, the patient outcome for pancreatic cancer has seen very little improvement and has earned a spot as one of the deadliest types of cancer.

Norbaini Razak from Curtin University is one person who has stepped in to try and make a difference to these outcomes this year, after being awarded a Funding Part-ner PhD Scholarship from Australian Rotary Health.

More specifically, Norbaini’s research project will focus on pancreatic cancer and how it can affect immune cell function – particularly neutrophils and platelets. It will also investigate how immune cells could potentially provide a source of biomarkers for the disease.

“In 2017 I hope to provide insight on the signalling involves in pancreatic cancer-induced neutrophil extracellular traps (NET) release, and also determine the role of pancreatic cancer exosomes in NET release,” Norbaini said.

“The 5-year survival rate for pancreatic cancer is at a low 7 per cent, making it amongst the deadliest cancers in Australia. It is imperative that we start to see pro-gress on pancreatic cancer research to help improve these rates and the overall pa-tient outcome.”

Norbain’s desire to pursue a PhD in pancreatic cancer research became clear after

she completed a small research project for her honours year, which investigated the

interactions between platelets, neutrophils and pancreatic cancer cells.

Recognising Community Services &

Supporting PTSD Research

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is often associated with veterans of war; however, the disorder can affect anyone who has been exposed to one or multiple traumatic events.

According to Dr Sam Harvey from the University of New South Wales and the Black Dog Institute, about 10 per cent of current emergency service workers have PTSD, and this does not account for those now retired.

“The cumulative exposure from attending multiple incidents across many years can cause mental health problems for a sizeable proportion of emergency workers,” Dr Harvey said.

Rotary District 9675 has managed the Rotary NSW Emergency Services Community Awards (RESCA) for a couple of years now, and through their relationship with NSW Emergency Service Agencies, it was recognised PTSD in Emergency Service workers is a problem that needs to be addressed.

RESCA is an initiative of the Rotary Districts and Clubs of New

South Wales that acknowledges and celebrates selfless community

service of Emergency Service Personnel and this year, funds raised

through the event will go towards an Australian Rotary Health PhD

Research Scholarship to focus on this area.

Funding Partner Spotlight: Kerry Anderson

During her husband’s year as District Governor for Rotary District 9650, Kerry Anderson took on the challenge to raise money for an Australian Rotary Health Funding Partner PhD Scholarship.

Kerry and some members of her family suffer from Epidermolysis Bullosa Simplex, a rare genetic condition that causes the skin to be very fragile and blister easily. Because the condition was so close to home, Kerry decided she wanted to add to the body of knowledge through funding research.

To achieve her goal Kerry spoke at every Rotary Club in District 9650 whenever her

husband Rob made an official visit, and received donations of various amounts from

the Clubs and the District Australian Rotary Health committee. In addition to this,

Kerry ran fun fines, auctions, and raffles at the District Conference.
