We are having our third meeting for October and Summer has flagrantly turned to Autumn. Last week, we sampled Gordon Biersch Brewery Restaurant, here in Town Center as we seek a new home base. We continue to live in the spirit of the Rotary theme for this year: “Rotary, Making a Difference”. The focus of today’s meeting is an update on the work performed to eradicate polio worldwide.

We continue to attend to our Mental Health Issues focus through providing awareness and a safer environment. This is not only an expectation, but a measurable result. These are some of the ways to make a difference in the level of good mental health in our community and a path to achieve this goal.

Please continue to support our Rotaract Club on 2nd and 4th Mondays of the month at the New River Taphouse at 1716 Pleasure House Rd #101, Va. Beach. Chris and John will continue to come to our meetings as fellow Rotarians.

Your continued involvement and support allow us to provide services to those we have dedicated our spirit to help as we continue to look at the effects of mental health issues on our community, the nation and the world. With the knowledge we gain, we will work to build public awareness of these issues and initiate programs that support mental wellness locally, nationally and world wide.

I invite you to join us weekly and participate in all of the events of the club, that we may continue to be successful in meeting our mission for 2017.

- Pat Edwards, President, Rotary Club of Town Center

Pat Edwards is the president of the Rotary Club at Town Center Virginia Beach. She is currently in her second term as president of the club. She brings a wealth of experience including working as an EMT, Emergency Room Technician, Aid and Rescue worker in natural disaster situations and

years of experience in various positions in Rotary clubs in New England and Virginia.

In her role today, she will be updating us on the highly successful, but still incomplete End Polio Now effort. She is well versed on this subject and will present a visual as well as oral presentation about our efforts so far and what is still needed for success in conquering this mighty killer.

To improve lives. 16 million people are walking today who would have otherwise been paralyzed.

To invest in the future. If polio isn’t eradicated, within 10 years, as many as 200,000 children could be paralyzed by it each year. A polio-free world will be a safer world for children everywhere.

To improve child health. Polio surveillance networks and vaccination campaigns also monitor children for other health problems like vitamin deficiency and measles, so they can be addressed sooner.

To save money. A polio-free world will save the global economy $40-$50 billion in health costs within the next 20 years.

To make history. Polio eradication would be one of history’s greatest public health achievements, with polio following smallpox to become only the second human disease eliminated from the world.
