ROTARY INTERNATIONAL PRESIDENT 2011-12 Kalyan Banerjee, India

Kalyan Banerjee is a director of United Phosphorus Limited, In-dia’s largest agrochemical manufacturer, and chair of United Phosphorus (Bangladesh) Limited. He is a member of the Indian Institute of Chemical Engineers and the American Chemical Society, past president of Vapi In-dustries Association, and former chair of the Gujarat chapter of the Con-federation of Indian Industry. Kalyan, of the Rotary Club of Vapi, has served Rotary as a director, Rotary Foundation trustee, International As-sembly group discussion leader, and president’s representative. As chair of the Southeast Asia PolioPlus Committee and a member of the International PolioPlus Committee, he has attended meetings with the World Health Organization and UNICEF. Kalyan has received the Foundation’s Distin-guished Service Award. He and his wife, Binota, are Major Donors, Bene-factors, and Bequest Society members.

    Good morning and namaste, as we say in India. 

Standing up here before all of you is without a doubt one of the most incredible mo‐ments I have had in Rotary. To see all of you, so many people, my brothers and sisters of Rotary, from so many nations, gathered here in New Orleans under the flag of Rotary, is simply amazing. And to have the call to serve as the first among equals in this great organization in the coming Rotary year is also a truly humbling experience. 

Some time back, we had a phone call from our granddaughter Tia, who lives in Austra‐lia and whom you met just a little while ago. Every week, she and her friends have to tell in school about what is going on at home with their families. Well, apparently when it came her turn to share the family update sometime back, she put up her hand and said, ―My grandpa is going to be the president of the world.  

Strangely enough, her teacher had a hard time believing that. She said, ―He’s going to be what?  And little Tia absolutely insisted. She said, ―He’s going to be president of the world. I know, because my mummy told me so.  Well, Tia’s teacher phoned up the mother, and after what had happened was explained, peace and calm returned. But today, whenever Tia meets up with me, she can’t resist saying, with her mis‐chievously sweet smile: ―Hello, President of the World.  

You know, coming into this assignment in Rotary right now, I can tell you that our President Ray, our own Rotary cowboy, is going to be a tough, tough act to follow. But today at least I’ve got the advantage, I think, because if there is anything bigger, better, and bolder than a cowboy, it is a cowboy and an Indian together. 

And here in New Orleans, we’ve got a lot of history, and even a lot of Rotary history as well. As I was preparing my remarks, I had a look at the proceedings of the last RI Convention held here, in 1976, when Ernesto Imbassahy de Mello of Brazil was the president of Rotary and Gerald Ford was president of America, which was cele‐brating its bicentennial. President Ford, who was himself a Rotarian, was to come to address the convention, but at the last moment he had to drop out and be replaced by another speaker, who quoted a valedictory speech given by a young lady at a Mississippi high school, who had said: ―The trouble in America today is not so much the noise of the bad as the silence of the good.

Well, speaking from a perspective of more than 34 years down the line and also of a somewhat different culture to that of the young lady at the high school, I would agree that it is a problem, but I would not call it a problem that is peculiar to the United States. It’s true, really, all around the world, that we hear much more about what is wrong with the world than about what is right. We notice much more the people who don’t care than the people who do. The people who create trouble rather than the people who get things right. 

But here in New Orleans today, we have abundant evidence that there are people who do care — people who are doing what is right — people who are doing good. And let me tell you, the good that you are doing in this world of ours is making a difference. 

Let me ask you, if I may: Why are we here today? Indeed, why are we all in Ro‐tary? I believe we are here because we care, and because we see both what’s wrong in the world, and what’s right. And we want to carry forward what’s good, build on it, expand on it, help it grow — while taking a hard look at what needs to be changed in our lives and then doing what we can to change it. 

Because at its core, I think, Rotary is about change. It’s about not being content with things as they are. It’s about not going gently into that good night. 

A man named David Selbourne, a British social commentator and historian, wrote a little book called Moral Evasion. And in it, he listed 11 reasons why people avoid making moral judgments, why they avoid looking at something and saying, this is not right and we must do something about it. That sounds familiar, doesn’t it? Let me recount a few of those reasons: 

―There is no quick fix.  

―There is nothing you can do about it.  

―The problem is much more complex than you think. ―You are focusing on the wrong issue.  

―It has never been any different.  

And, of course, the perennial, ―Who are you to talk?  Well, who indeed are we to talk? 

Who are we? We are Rotarians.

PRESIDENT-ELECT 2012-13 Sakuji Tanaka

 

 

Sakuji Tanaka, a member of the Rotary Club of Yashio, Saitama, Japan, was  elected  president  of  Rotary  International  for  2012‐13  by  dele‐gates during the fourth plenary session at the 2011 RI Convention in New Orleans, Louisiana, USA.  

For 32 years, Tanaka was president of Tanaka Company Ltd., a whole‐sale firm that went public in 1995 and later merged with other leading wholesalers in Japan. Currently, he serves as vice president of the Ya‐shio City Chamber of Commerce and adviser to Arata Co. Ltd., an ani‐mal feed and pet food wholesaler. He also chaired the National House‐hold Papers Distribution Association of  Japan for eight years. Tanaka studied business at Nihon Management Daigakuin and Tokyo Manage‐ment Daigakuin. 

A  past  trustee  of  The  Rotary  Foundation,  Tanaka  chaired  the  2009 Birmingham  Convention  Committee.  His  other  service  to  Rotary  in‐cludes  RI  director,  regional  Rotary  Foundation  coordinator,  district governor, and member of the Polio Eradication Advocacy Task Force, the Permanent Fund Committee for Japan, and the Future Vision Com‐mittee. 

Tanaka established an endowed Rotary Peace Fellowship, and he and his wife, Kyoko, are Paul Harris Fellows, Benefactors of the Permanent Fund, and Major Donors. 

He  is  a  recipient  of  RI’s  Service  Above  Self  Award  and  The  Rotary Foundation’s Distinguished Service Award.

RI DIRECTOR - ZONES 21b & 27 2010-2012 Noel A. Bajat

Noel A. Bajat, of the Rotary Club of Abbeville, Lou‐isiana,  is  president  and  director  of  Abbeville Building and Loan. He is a director of Goodwill Industries of Acadiana and has served as organizing director and first president of the Neighborhood Housing Services of Lafayette, as well as chamber of  commerce  president.  He  has  received  the Mayor’s  Distinguished  Service  Award  and  the Personalities of the South Award. 

A Rotarian since 1976, Noel has served RI as Dis‐trict  Governor,  Task  Force  Member,  Task  Force 

Zone Coordinator, RI International Training Leader, National Advisor  to the Permanent Fund, Delegate to the 2004 Council on Legislation and was the Regional Rotary Foundation Coordinator for Zone 26. 

He is the recipient of The Rotary Foundation Citation for Meritori‐ous Service, the Rotary Foundation Distinguish Service Award and the Rotary Foundation Service Above Self Award. 

Noel  and  his  wife,  Sis,  are  Major  Donors,  Benefactors,  charter members of the Bequest Society, charter members of the Paul Harris Society in District 6200 and members of the White Hat Society. 

Noel will serve as a Director of Rotary International for the 2010–2012 Rotary years.

Greetings from Governor Roger Ptolemy 

Dear Rotarian, Why did you join Rotary?  Was it for the networking and professional de‐velopment opportunities?  The service opportunities?  The fellowship?  Whatever your reason, I’m sure you have discovered that Rotary delivers all of these, and more.   Rotary has something for everyone.  Whatever en‐deavor of merit and worth that you seek, you can find it in Rotary.     You are part of an extraordinary organization.  Mankind has never known anything like it.  Rotary is truly changing the world, accomplishing things that no government, church, or any other entity has ever been able to do.  There are many reasons for this:  Rotary is made up of active leaders… movers and shakers from all walks of life, people who know how to get things done and do them right.  Rotary follows values that people every‐where admire and respect.  Rotary is non‐political and non‐denominational.  In Rotary, the barriers that separate nations dissolve, the walls that divide religions melt away.  So Rotary has unprecedented reach.  It has boots on the ground everywhere.  Rotary covers the globe like no other human endeavor in history.  No other service organization offers the scope of international service of Rotary.  And no other service organization has anything like The Rotary Foundation, the highly efficient and respected funding engine that provides the financial thrust for our international ser‐vice activities.  Rotary offers an unparalleled opportunity to truly make a difference.  You can think of Rotary as a sort of giant leverage mechanism that enables you to amplify your own individual efforts into results far greater than you could ever achieve on your own.  We are part of an exciting organization in times when we are seriously needed… times of great oppor‐tunity to really make a difference.  Come join me.  Let’s change the world!  Yours in Service, Roger Ptolemy

Roger retired in 2004 after serving nearly 30 years as president of Data West Corporation, a software enterprise he co-founded in 1975. Data West de-velops utility billing and information systems used by clients throughout the United States. Roger entered the Rotary world in 1977 through the GSE door, joining the Durango Rotary Club directly after returning from a GSE tour of the West Indies. He served as President of the Durango Rotary Club in 1987-88. A strong supporter of GSE, he has served on the District GSE Committee most of the time since joining Rotary, chairing the committee intermittently about 15 times. In January of 1987 he went on a second GSE trip as leader of a team to India (Haryana and northern Rajasthan). Other district-level Rotary service has included the District Foundation Alumni Chair for several years, the District Scholarship Committee for over 15 years and the District Youth Exchange Committee for about 10 years as District RYE Training Officer. Roger served as the District Service Chair in 2008-09 and 2009-10. He is a native of Durango and has a degree in Mathematics from Fort Lewis College. A dedicated advocate of education, Roger is on the Fort Lewis College Foundation Board of Directors, and is also a founding Trustee of the non-profit Liberty School for dyslexic and gifted children in Durango. He was the first Treasurer of the Liberty School Board, from 2006 to 2009. Roger served in the Peace Corps in the South Pacific as a high school sci-ence teacher in 1971-72. There he met his late wife, Andrea, to whom he was later married for 25 years. He enjoys music, conversation, outdoor rec-reation, and travel, especially in developing areas of the world. He has one stepdaughter, Jennifer, who, following her parents’ example, completed two years of Peace Corps service in Thailand in March of 2010. Roger and Jen-nifer are both Paul Harris Fellows.

Carla earned a B.A. in Elementary Education from the University of California in Santa Barbara, her hometown. After college, she and hus-band, Jim, relocated to St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands. In order to provide a strong education for their children, they helped create and sustain two private schools. Leaving education, Carla worked in publishing, radio and newspaper sales before opening her own full service advertising agency. She became a member of Rotary Mid-Isle in 1989 and served on the Board of Directors until moving to Colorado Springs in 1997 where she worked as a media planner and earned an M.A. in Business Communication. Carla rejoined Rotary in 2004 as a member of Garden of the Gods club. She was Club President in 2006-2007, is a member of the District Rotary Youth Exchange Committee and Area 2 Assistant Gov-ernor. Jim is also a member of Garden of the Gods, serving as Secretary, and PEN. He and Carla are both Paul Harris Fellows. They have two daughters and four grandchildren.

DISTRICT 5470 DISTRICT GOVERNOR NOMINEE– WALLY MILLER

Wally has been a Rotarian in six different clubs in five districts from coast-to-coast over the last 36 years, starting in California. He has main-tained perfect attendance for that period and is past president of the Colo-rado Springs Rotary Club. He served as Assistant District Governor over five years in two different areas of District 5470. He has also served on the "Asking Committee" of District 5470 during our highest years of fund-raising. A major area of interest during all of that time has been In-ternational, though he has served as a Director in all of the Rotary Ave-nues of Service.

His aviation experience in management, advertising, public relations, marketing, safety and training spans more than 55 years. He has been a pilot for all of that time, is a long-time, still active flight instructor and was the 9-state FAA Rocky Mountain Region's "Flight Instructor of the year" for 2003. He is chairman of the Colorado Springs Airport Com-mission, President of the Rocky Mountain Flight Training Center in Colo-rado Springs and owns an aviation, marketing and Communication firm, The Polygon Group. He retired from the U.S. Air Force as a colonel, has taught at the Air Force Academy and holds a Masters' degree in commu-nication from the University of Denver.

Wally and his wife, Charlotte, live in Monument, CO. They have two sons on active duty in the U.S. Air Force; the older son a Lieutenant Gen-eral at the Pentagon, the younger son Commander of a 9.200-person Air Force Wing in Georgia. Their daughter lives with her family near Lon-don, England. All three are Paul Harris Fellows, as are Wally and Char-lotte."

DISTRICT 5470 IMMEDIATE PAST DISTRICT GOVERNOR – STEVE BERG

         Dear Rotarians, This has been a great year. It has been my pleasure to visit your clubs and enjoy the wonderful variety that is Rotary. Each club has its own remarkable personality. Your projects are diverse. You, the clubs, are indeed the heart and soul of Rotary. Our district conference at Mount Princeton Hot Springs with the natural beauty of the 14ers all around us was a huge success. We were inspired by the speakers, Joe Dittmar, Tom Thorfinnson and Ron Axel. We laughed and had fun. We raised $4000 for Polio Plus and I got to wear that fabulous red dress. We hosted a GSE team from Alsace, France and sent one there. Our team came home with “wine withdrawal.” A new club was chartered, with Palisade Sunrise becoming our 58th club. We now have Salida Breakfast as a provisional club. We have just returned from the Rotary International Convention in New Orleans. The fellowship, music and food were awesome. We heard Bill Gates remind us that we are “this close” to eradicating polio.

District Secretary Dave Cook is a native of Colorado, born in Manzanola, he grew up in Rocky Ford. He received his BS degree at Colorado State University and a MS degree  from New Mexico Highlands University. He  is retired  from  teaching public school secondary mathematics for 37 years. Dave first became a Rotarian in  the Buena Vista club  just a  few years ago. He became  the secretary/treasurer shortly after joining the club, a position he still holds in addition to his other duties. Dave and his wife Kathy have been married for 44 years. They have three children and 7 grand children. Their daughter and family live in Alaska, one son and family live in California and the youngest son and family live in Colorado.

District Treasurer Frank McKenzie is a Certified Public Accountant. and retired CFO of DeBourgh Manufacturing. He  is a past president of  the La  Junta Rotary  Club  and  has  been  a  member  since  1975.  He  has  three  daughters,  two grandsons and one granddaughter.  Frank McKenzie is a life‐long La Junta resident and enjoys skiing,  golf, and scuba diving.

Paulette has been a Rotarian since 1988, first in Forest City, IA and now in Durango, CO.  She has  served as Executive Director of  the Durango Adult Education Center since July of 1999, and it received the prestigious El Pomar Award of Excellence in Education in 2005. Prior to this position, she taught at Waldorf College in Iowa and served as Director of the Academic Support Program for at‐risk college students. The  Colorado  Nonprofit  Association  awarded  her  the William  Funk  Award  for Community Building  for 2010.  She holds a BA  in Education  from Arizona State University  and  a MA  in Educational Technology  from  the University  of Northern Iowa.

 Thompson has been a Rotarian since 1988 and tends to accept more as‐signments  and projects  than  is practical.   With her husband  J.R.  she guided  the Rotary Youth Exchange  for 16 years.     She was District Governor  in 2003‐2004.   She and her husband J.R. still operate his family’s newspaper, the Rocky Ford Daily Gazette.  They are multiple Paul Harris Fellows and Bequest Society members.

Sarah  has  been  a  member  of  the  Rotary  Club  of  Paonia  for  ten  years.  She served as Club President  in 2006‐2007, having served previously as Club Community Service  Chair.  She  then  served  as  Area  12  Assistant  Governor.  Sarah  has  a  BA  in Spanish from the College of Wooster and a PhD in Romance Linguistics from Ohio State University. Her professional career took her to the University of Albuquerque as direc‐tor of programs  ranging  from services  to minority  students  to writing  an MS degree program in criminal  justice.  In Washington, DC, she was a program officer in the De‐partment of Education and Deputy Director of  the National Commission on Libraries and Information Science. She started Partners in Parks, a non‐profit organization that re‐cruited interns dedicated to supporting research programs  in national parks. She now spends her time with husband Bill learning to ranch and participating in everything the community has to offer including skiing, fishing, hiking, music, and more. 

DISTRICT 5470 SERVICE COMMITTEE - EDDIE CHUNG

Eddie  (Kwok  Yen)  Cheung was  born  in  Shanghai,  China  and spent his childhood there and Hong Kong. In 1971 he immigrated to New York City with  family.  Eddie  left New York  in 1977  to work on West Coast  in plastic  injection molds making business. By 1984, having established his own company, he was busy assisting entrepreneurs design and manufacture all types of projects with plastic compo‐nents. Eddie continues to consult after selling it. In 1995 Eddie joined Newbury Park Rotary and was involved community service, fundraising and traveling internationally for Polio Plus and the club’s international projects. Eddie and his wife, Nancy, moved to Durango in the summer of 2008. Eddie joined Durango Daybreak Rotary and has contin‐ued his involvement in community service. When not in Colorado, Eddie and Nancy are in California visiting his son, Chris and his family or Maine with daughter Mei Ling.

DISTRICT 5470 PUBLIC RELATIONS CHAIR - J. R. THOMPSON

J.R Thompson is a Colorado native who has been involved in the newspa‐per business all his  life.   He has served as a director and president of  the Colorado Press Association. He joined the Rotary Club of Rocky Ford in 1973 at the ripe old age of 22 and has served in many club and district capacities since then.  He was a GSE Team leader and guided the District Youth Exchange committee for almost 16  years.  He  and  his  wife,  PDG  Laura,  still  operate  his  family’s  newspaper,  the Rocky Ford Daily Gazette.  They are multiple Paul Harris Fellows and Bequest Soci‐ety members. .

Born in Baltimore, MD., she earned a PhD. degree from Colorado State University in Community College Leadership.  She retired last year after 31 years at Colorado Mountain College where she served as Dean of the Aspen Campus and as Vice President of Academic Affairs.  Ann is a passionate collector of.   contempo‐rary art and crafts and a fan and attendee of all types of music.   Ann joined Rotary in 1990 as a charter member of the Snowmass Village Rotary Club. She served as Team Leader of the GSE Team to Israel in 2001 and was Dis‐trict Governor in 2004‐05. Ann is a multiple Paul Harris Fellow and a Bequest Soci‐ety Member and is now a member of the Carbondale Rotary Club.

AG Norma Pankratz has been a member of the Burlington Rotary Club since 1991. Her professional career began in 1961 as an Extension Home Economist in  Kansas.  She  retired  as  Social  Services  Director  for  Kit  Carson  and  Lincoln Counties in 2001. She has volunteered in various organizations throughout the years and is very involved with Historical Preservation through the 105 year old  Kit  Carson  County  Carousel  also  known  as  Philadelphia  Toboggan  Company Carousel #6. She has served the Burlington Club as President and is on her 5th year as AG. She is a multiple PHF. Norma has 2 daughters and 4 grandchildren.

Tom Tudor, four time president of the Rampart Range Rotary Club, was raised in Des Moines, Iowa where his father was a member of the Des Moines Rotary Club #27, founded in 1911.  Tom served in the U.S. Army 1968‐1970.  He volunteered for the Old Guard and served as Sentinel and Relief Commander at the Tomb of the Un‐known Soldier in Arlington National Cemetery.  Tom moved to Denver in 1981 and in 1983 began working in the school fund raising business.  He married Beatrice Ann Peek (B'Ann) in 1985 and moved to Colorado Springs in 1987.  He has two daughters, Abby, 21 who is at Northern Arizona University, and Sarah, 25 who is completing her Master's in biostatistics at UT Medical Center in Houston.

Assistant District Governor Dennis Scott was born to Rotarian Bob and Ro‐tary Ann  (really)  in  St Paul, MN,  and  lived  in MN, NB,  and SD.  In 1959 he entered  the  Air  Force  Academy  in  the  first  class  to  spend  all  four  years  at Colorado Springs. Dennis entered the USAF as a Basic Cadet, and left 32 years later as a Full Colonel. Upon leaving the military, he was a Certified Financial Planner. He and his wife Nancy built their dream house near Trinidad. They “do Rotary”,  fly  fish,  golf,  and  travel. Dennis  is  a  13  year Rotarian. He  and Nancy are multiple PHFs.

Assistant Governor Jerry Grandey is the immediate past president of Telluride Rotary Club. Jerry has been a Telluride resident since 1976, although he born and raised in western Pennsylvania and western New York State. A graduate of Syracuse University, he began working with motion picture production while in the US Air Force, and then continued to work in the Hollywood film business for thirty plus  years,  primarily  as  an  assistant  director  and producer.  Jerry was one of the first to successfully live away from Hollywood while working free‐lance in the film business.

Assistant Governor Kim Giannone has been a Rotarian since 1994 and is a past presi‐dent of the Grand Junction Club. When not engaged in Rotary activities, she is the senior  investment advisor of  the Giannone Financial Strategies Group of Wachovia Securities.  She  has  been  with Wachovia  and  its  predecessor  firms  for  over  16 years.  She  is  a magna cum  laude graduate of Christopher Newport University  and holds a BSBA in Finance and Communications. Kim was raised in Grand Junction. She joined the US Air Force following graduation and was on active duty for over 5 years. While serving in Germany, Kim met and married Joe Giannone, who is also from Grand Junction. They returned to western Colorado following Joe’s retirement from the Air Force and are now active raising and showing Bernese Mountain Dogs.

Rotary International President’s Emphases & Goals: Our first emphasis in this Rotary year will be the family. Our second emphasis will be on continuity, on find-ing the things that we do well and taking them to the next level.

Our third emphasis in 2011-12 will be change, and we start by being the

District 5470 Governor’s Emphases & Goals:

Building the Public Image of Rotary. Each club should have some sort of public relations exposure at least once per month. This could include television or radio spots or free public service pieces from the Humanity in Motion series (available from RI), newspaper ads or ar-ticles, posters or flyers promoting a Rotary fundraiser or service activity, or an Internet presence, such as a club website, Facebook page, etc. with continuously updated fresh material.

Building Membership through recruitment of new members

and improved retention of existing ones. Each club should have a mini-mum net increase of one member during the year (new members less lost members).

More collaboration and cooperation between clubs on activi-

ties of all sorts... service projects, fundraisers, social events, etc. All clubs in each locality should have a joint activity of some sort at least once per quarter.

Rotary Foundation contributions of $300,000 district-wide.

This comes out to an average of approximately $10 per member per month.

DISTRICT CONFERENCE

This is the big annual celebration of Rotary for all members and their families, scheduled for October 14-15-16, 2011 in Durango and the beautiful new Sky Ute Conference Center in Ignacio. We will honor achievements of the year just ended and look ahead to the year to come. Enjoy good food, great speak-ers, stimulating discussion and lively entertainment. Meet Rotarians from around the district, exchange ideas, and return home newly inspired!

HIGH COUNTRY PETS 2012

Rotary Districts 5440, 5450, 5470, 5390 and 5630 work together in a number of events each year to promote and accomplish Rotary goals. One of the most significant ways in which the five Districts work together is their joint effort in training the incoming President Elects and President Elect Nominees, one of the very best training seminars in Rotary. This three day training seminar is given to provide the incoming club leaders with all the tools needed for them and their club to have a successful Rotary year. Incoming club leaders will have the opportunity to meet many Rotary International leaders. It is also a time to learn and share ideas between Rotary leaders and clubs throughout the five Districts. Incoming PEs and PENs need to put this important event on their calendar. The next PETS will be held at the Denver Marriott Tech Center on Feb. 24, 25, & 26, 2012.

DISTRICT ASSEMBLIES

The District Assemblies are held each year to help the leadership of the clubs with their plans for the coming year and to enlighten new and old members on our goals and workings of Rotary. Good planning by the leaders and informed club members will help ensure that each club will have a suc-cessful year. This is an opportunity for all members to gain insight into Ro-tary’s overall goals and opportunities. This will be a time to learn from and exchange ideas with the District’s Leaders. Each club should make sure their new members and leaders attend one of the two Assemblies held in Grand Junction on April 14th and Colorado Springs on April 28th.

FOUNDATION DINNER & FOUNDATION SEMINAR

A special occasion to remember is the Foundation Dinner to be held on January 13th, a Friday evening in Denver at the Marriott Tech Center. This will be followed on Saturday, January 14th by the annual Foundation Seminar which has been outstanding in recent years. All you ever wanted to know about the Rotary Foundation and more!!!!

D.D. MONROE AWARD Named for Past District Governor in 1940-1941, D.D. Monroe, from Clayton, New Mexico, the purpose of this award is to honor the outstanding Club in District 5470 who demonstrate the following:

and communities in other countries. • Support the Rotary Foundation through both program participation and fi-

ROTARY FOUNDATION AWARD

The purpose of this award is to recognize the outstanding clubs in Rotary Foundation giving. Designed for Rotarians who serve humanity through Foundation programs, it is presented in 3 categories. Clubs with less than 50 members; clubs from 50-80 members and clubs with greater than 80 members. The Award consists of:

• Highest per capita giving • Highest Total Giving.

ROTARIAN OF THE YEAR AWARD

The purpose of this award is to recognize an individual for his outstanding contribution to District 5470 during the past year.

BEST CLUB BULLETIN The purpose of this award is to recognize a club bulletin that communicates vital Rotary information and club events to the membership.

This is a new award, the purpose being to encourage clubs to develop and maintain their own web sites for communicating with their members. The criteria are

posted on the District 5470 web site at www.5470.org.

PUBLIC RELATIONS AWARD

The Rotary Public Relations Award recognizes one club per district that has generated increased awareness and understanding of Rotary through outstanding media coverage or public relations efforts. The media campaign must take place before Mar 15, be submitted to the district by Mar 30 and sent by the District Governor to RI by May 15.

ROTARY INTERNATONAL AWARDS

This award is an Internationally competitive award granted to a maximum of 150 Ro-tarians worldwide per year who are examples of Service above Self. The purpose is to recognize individual Rotarians who have demonstrated exemplary humanitarian service in any form at any level of Rotary with the emphasis on personal volunteer efforts and active involvement in helping others through Rotary. This is Rotary International’s highest honor for individual Rotarians.

ROTARY INTERNATIONAL SERVICE ABOVE SELF

This award is based on development of a plan for membership development and reten-tion submitted by club Presidents to the District Governor. The DG may submit up to three nominations to Rotary International.

REGOGNITION OF MEMBER DEVELOPMENT INITIATIVES

This award is to encourage clubs to strengthen their membership by recruiting qualified members and retaining existing members during the year, based on statistics as of May 15. Clubs must submit membership statistics to the DG to be eligible for this award. These statistics are then compared to the RI and district secretary reports. Recognition is provided for the: (1) Club with the highest growth rate, (2) Club with the highest retention rate, (3) Club with the most new members.

MEMBERSHIP DEVELOPMENT & EXTENSION AWARD

The purpose of this award (one per district) is to recognize a single club activity that addresses a community problem or need. The project must involve most or all of the club members in a personal way rather than merely monetary service, enhance the im-age of Rotary in the community, encourage new projects on the part of every club and to promote increased awareness of the importance of exemplary club efforts. Club presidents must submit their project nomination with extensive documentation to the District Governor for committee review no later than February 1. The DG submits the selected nomination to RI no later than March 15.

SIGNIFICANT ACHIEVEMENT AWARD

CITATION FOR MERITORIOUS SERVICE

One Rotarian per district may be recognized by the Rotary Foundation Trus-tees for outstanding service to the Foundation extending beyond one year. Nomina-tions must be submitted at least six weeks ahead of the planned presentation

REGOGNITION OF SMALL CLUB DEVELOPMENT

This district-level award offers an incentive to clubs that fall below the charter requirement of 20 members by recognizing the challenges and achievements of small clubs.

Any one who commits to the Foundation in writing to make a minimum gift of US $100 or more every year to the Annual Programs Fund will be recognized as a Sustaining Member. Sustaining Members receive a membership card and a sticker to affix to their club name badges for each year that they participate in the program. Complete a Sustaining Member Pledge Form and submit it with your gift of a minimum of US $100 or more to the Rotary Foundation.

The Rotary Foundation recognizes those couples or individuals whose combined personal outright or cumulative giving has reached US $10,000. All outright contributions made to the Rotary Foundation are included in this total, re-gardless of the gift designation. Donors may elect to receive a crystal recognition piece and Diamond Circle pins com-memorating the gift at each new recognition level. Diamond Pins reflect the combined totals from personal outright contributions as well as bequest commitments.

You may become a Benefactor to The Rotary Foundation by making the Permanent Fund a beneficiary of your estate plans or by making an outright gift of US $1,000 or more to the Permanent Fund. The White Hat Society was formed in Septem-ber 2004 in the Rotary Institute at the Chaparral Suites in Scottsdale, Arizona to promote regular, significant, annual giving to the Rotary Foundation. The Duties of Membership: • Donate US $5,000 to The Rotary Foundation. • Recruit one other Rotarian to do the same. Donations may take the form of cash instru-ments, credit cards, stock and other capital assets, or irrevocable insurance policies made to the Bequest Society. Contributions should be made directly to the Rotary Foundation. All contributions will be credited to the Rotarian Donor, Club, and District.

WHITE HAT SOCIETY

The District Service Award is designed for Rotarians who serve humanity through Foun-dation Programs. They are awarded at the dis-trict level by District Governors. This away may go to any Rotarian whose service to humanity deserves special recognition.
