The Vermilion Rotary Club is very proud of one of their members and would like to take this op-

portunity to highlight the great work he has done. Robin Sherwood joined the Vermilion Rotary Club a

little more than a year ago. Prior to joining Rotary he had a vision to send a sea can full of books to Belize

to be distributed amongst the schools in the rural districts of the country.

What started as a lofty goal reached recently reached its completion. A sea can weighing 34,000

pounds left Vermilion the beginning of March and is on route to Belize. Every single one of the 900 boxes

packed into the sea can was handled by Robin. He spent countless hours sorting and sifting through the

numerous donations he received. An assortment of books was collected including novels, children’s pic-

ture books, dictionaries and encyclopaedias.

Donations came from book drives, individuals and organizations. Northern Lights Library System

agreed to provide him with books no longer needed and every two months sent a half ton full of books.

While working on his project Robin heard about the work Distict 5370 was doing with the Belize

Literacy Project. This prompted him to join the Vermilion Rotary Club. The Vermilion Rotary Club has

supported Robin’s efforts by contributing financially to the project and by holding a book drive. The club

also connected him to The Border City Rotary Club in Lloydminster who held their own book drive. .

Robin plans to be in Belize to meet the sea can and help distribute the books. Robin hopes these

books will contribute to the education of the children of Belize. In his own words, “We cannot change

the world, but perhaps we can give at least one of these kids an alternative.”

What’s next for Robin? Rumour has it another sea can is being purchased...

Fellow Rotarians in District 5370:

RE: Dr. Oz Fundraiser / Opportunity for Advanced tickets for Rotarians !! Rotary Pro-

ject at Fort Edmonton Park

Many of you are familiar with the efforts of Rotarians in District 5370 who have been

working over the past couple of years to create a significant and visible legacy project

at Fort Edmonton in celebration of 100 years of Rotary in this District. Rotarians creat-

ed Fort Edmonton in 1966, on our 50th anniversary. It seemed natural, through a com-

munity service project – the expansion of the Selkirk Hotel and possible new location

of the District 5370 office, to re-connect Rotary to Fort Edmonton Park. The Park is

this region’s 2nd largest tourist attraction and a jumping off spot to other Alberta desti-

nations in District 5370.

This is not a small project. It is our belief that Rotarians in District 5370 will raise $3mil

of the approximate $12 mil cost over the next several years. We are delighted to an-

nounce our first Rotary Legacy Project fund raising event, bringing “an evening with

Dr. Oz” to Rexall Place on Thursday, June 5th, 2014. This will be the first time Dr. Oz

has presented at a venue like this in western Canada. Dr. Mehmet Oz. was a featured

health expert on “The Oprah Winfrey Show” for over five seasons, spanning 55 epi-

sodes before hosting his own Emmy award winning daytime show. Dr. Oz has authored

seven New York Times Best Sellers and has been honored as one of Time magazine’s

100 Most Influential People.

Rotary You Leadership Awards

14

I am the current chairperson for the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) of District 5370. I would like to make an addition to the May issue of the District newsletter, assuming it has not yet been finished, in order to reach out to Rotarians about supporting New Gens/Youth Services. I would like to bridge the gap between New Gens/Youth Services with Rotarians and create more oppor-tunities for mentorship and partnership through the District. So, with Summer vacation coming up, I would like to ask all Rotarians to please let me know if them, their company/business, foundation, etc. have any opportunities that would be suitable for youth so that I may compile a list for New Gens in the District. These can be paid or unpaid, temporary or ongoing, etc. I will likely start a new page on my web-site and post them there: lindseylam.com. For Rotarians, this would be a great opportunity for to meet some of the bright young minds that are in our very own District. It would be an excellent way to partner with a youth who could contribute fresh thoughts and opinions to your businesses. New Gens in our District is full of high-achieving, ambitious young individuals. This would be a mutually beneficial opportunity both for Rotarians and the youth. That said, if anyone has any questions, comments, or concerns, they are more than welcome to email me at [email protected], or contact me via Facebook. This is a completely new idea which has never been done before in our District, so if anyone has any suggestions or would like to discuss this idea further, please contact me! Also contact me if any opportunities are available to share. Please take this into con-sideration! I know from my own experiences that young people have just as much to learn from you as you do from them and this would be a great opportunity for you to see just exactly what they are capable of! I hope you will be able to make room in the May newsletter for this addition. If you have any concerns, please do let me know! Best, Lindsey Lam Rotary International District 5370 Rotary Youth Leadership Awards Chairperson (780) 566-2126 [email protected]

Rotary Club of Grande Prairie successfully sold out their Dream Home Lottery and Cash Jackpot 50-50 on Easter Sunday. Last year the fundraiser netted over $630,000 for the club. The club uses it to fund projects and programs. Plans are already underway for the 2016 lottery. The lottery is operated by the Rotary Club of Grande Prairie and is also used as a tool to market Ro-tary in the region. Karen Munjak chaired 2014 and says they’re delighted for the sellout. “It’s a vote of confidence for the Rotary Club of Grande Prairie and al the clubs in our city. “

A Candid conversation with 2015-16 District 5370 Governor Tim and Sally Schilds regard-

ing their passion for our Rotary Foundation as Major Donors and Bequest Society Mem-

bers

What prompted you to get involved with Rotary International?

(Tim) “I joined Rotary in 1988, as a second generation Rotarian. I had just started my own

accounting practice and wanted to give back to the community. Sally joined in 2005 after

attending and leaving inspired by the Osaka Convention. Both of our parents were always

part of the community so we had a history of watching them give back and it just felt like

the right thing to do.”

Was there a specific event or turning point that inspired you to want to support the

Foundation?

(Sally) “I remember a District conference that showcased the work of the Foundation. I

spent an hour reaching for tissue. I was so overwhelmed, first by the needs of our commu-

nities around the world and then overwhelmed by the everyday heroes that the Founda-

tion supports to bring a positive proactive change to those communities. I finally under-

stood what all the fuss was about and I saw my role…by giving money to the Foundation, I

could support and connect with those hero Rotarians and connect and support my broth-

ers and sisters who were in such need.”

You recently made both a Major Gift and a Named Bequest gift commitment in support

of the SHARE program; which allows for your gift to have both international impact

through the World Fund as well as local impact through the use of District Designated

Funds. Why was this important to you both?

“We wanted the clubs in our district to be able to meet the needs of the community wher-

ever they were working and SHARE was the best way to do that. We have some clubs that

can’t afford to contribute a lot and we feel this is a way to help them out as well. Being

able to have a named fund did help make a difference in that we feel it will help to set an

example to our children and grandchildren as they will be able to see the legacy. Hopefully

they will see what giving and community involvement can do and take steps to be involved

as well.”

What makes you most proud of the work of our Foundation?

“We have travelled to a few locations and to see the Rotary wheel on a project

makes us feel very proud. The Foundation looks for sustainability to bring about real

long term improvements to the lives of the people who need it most. The impact it

makes on us is both humbling and uplifting. There is also the security in knowing

that fellow Rotarians are making sure the money gets to the right place on the other

end. The Rotary Foundation has opened the world to us as one community. Through

our donations we have witnessed borders and limitations disappear. We understand

now that it is in everyone’s best interest to be involved and take care of our brothers

and sisters around the world.”
