As your District Gov-ernor, I couldn’t be more proud. RI Presi-dent Bill Boyd and Lorna’s visit to our District July 28th and 29th was a huge success. Rotarians came from across our District, from District 5520 (New Mexico) and District 5690 (Oklahoma) to help celebrate the fact that the current RI President came to Amarillo. So many capable Rotarians helped plan this event and make it possible. This was a record setting event for our District. Had all PHF recipients been able to attend that evening we would have presented 259 new PHF's and 323 multiple PHF's. As you know, only those who actually attended were pre-sented their awards, which came to 240 awards. In addition, 3 major donors were recognized. Earlier in the day, 31 charter members of the Paul Harris So-ciety were recognized. We had 520 people attend the Saturday evening ban-quet. The Amarillo Globe News and Channels 10 and 7 had publicity on the event. Sunday morning at breakfast, President Bill Boyd and Lorna visited with me, Jeanette, PDG Doyle Moore and Doris, and shared with us how much they en-joyed their visit to Amarillo. President Bill stated more than once, what an out-standing weekend it had been and that it was well-planned and highly success-ful for The Rotary Foundation. President Bill said the Texas hospitality ex-tended by everyone was gracious and genuine. Both Bill and Lorna made the statement that some trips are just "better" and this trip was one of them. Presi-dent Bill asked that I pass on his and Lorna’s thanks, to all those who made their time in Amarillo so memorable. I hope everyone had a good time and feels as proud as what I do. Let me say again, thanks to everyone for helping make this event successful.

SPEARMAN CLUB ACHIEVES RARE ACCOMPLISHMENT IN ROTARY
by AG Craig Jones
District 5730. Justin Boyd, President of the Spearman club, felt challenged at this year’s District Conference to obtain his first Paul Harris Fellow award, taking advan-tage of a dollar-for-dollar matching program offered at the Conference in Ruidoso. On that same day, Boyd, Assistant District Governor Craig Jones and District Governor-Elect Roger Sepulveda began discussing the possibility of the Spearman club reach-ing this lofty goal. Over the next three months, through additional commitments of funds and Foundation Recognition Points from Spearman club members and transfers of points from
According to the Rotary In-ternational website, www.rotary.org, “Rotary clubs in which 100 percent of all dues-paying members are Paul Harris Fellows are eligible to receive special recognition from The Rotary Foundation. Qualifying Rotary clubs will receive a special club recognition banner, and the club name will be engraved on a plaque in The Rotary Foundation Hall of Honor at Rotary International World Headquarters.” Due to the outstanding commitment of the Spearman Rotary Club to the Rotary Foundation, there are now 725 100% Paul Harris Fellow clubs in the world, 324 in the U.S., 22 in Texas, and now, for the first time in history, 1 in

Why I am a Rotarian by Neville Buchanan
During my missionary years in Kenya I witnessed the ravaging effects of Polio. I also experienced the results of living without reliable water. I remember seeing a mother scoop water from a pothole after a rare rainfall. Why am I a Rotarian? Just a few years ago Rotary’s Compas-sionate arm stretched out into every Polio ridden crevice on every continent. Now, in the same way, it stretches to the most
Hansford County looking to bag several birds and enjoy food and fellowship with local Rotarians. Spearman Rotarians support local literacy by donating a book, autographed by each week’s program speaker, to local schools throughout the year. Other projects include support of the Reading Recovery Program at the local Elementary School, donations to the Spearman Scholarship Foundation and support of Camp RYLA, just to name a few. The Spearman Rotary Club meets on Mondays at noon at The Hungry Cowboy Restaurant south of Spearman on Highway 207.
As a 100% Paul Harris Club, the Spearman Rotarians are a great
example for our District when it comes to “Leading The Way”

August is Membership and Expansion Month
by Ellen Pate, Membership Chair
The District Membership Committee is committed to assisting your club grow
Rotary. Challenges frequently develop involving member retention, poor attendance, member malaise,
and attrition. No matter what your club’s challenge we can assist you. We are currently developing a
Membership Emergency Response Team “MERT” to assist the District Governor with clubs who want and/
or need to revitalize their club. If your club would like our help speak to the Governor or call Ellen Pate,
432-352-2800.
Start thinking about the new membership development initiatives your club can undertake throughout
August to celebrate Membership and Extension Month. Consider scheduling the program topics for each
of the month's meetings to focus on a different facet of membership development, such as:
• Developing a prospective member information packet
• Mentoring programs for new members
• Increasing club presence in local media
Grow Your Club
Have all new members sign a pledge to propose a new member within 3-6
months after joining your club.
Everyone is a valuable part of Rotary
Develop a “duty” roster each quarter with routine meeting duties. Assign
different members each week to these duties. Distribute a wallet-size calen-
dar for each member and publish the next week’s schedule in the bulletin.
Require members to get a sub if they cannot complete their assigned duty.
Get New Members involved
Pair new members with the Bulletin Editor and club secretary for several
weeks. When paired with Bulletin Editor new member takes notes and the
editor explains things like “RYLA,” “GSE,” and “PDG.” When paired with Sec-
retary, new member takes attendance at the secretary’s side and greets
members. During the meeting the new member announces the attendance
total and introduces guests.
Diversifying Rotary
Visit a Black or Hispanic Chamber of Commerce Networking Breakfast. If
you don’t have one in your area, host a networking breakfast and make it a
point to exchange business cards with minority business owners.
